Shappie ties PFL touchdown mark as Flyers smoke Camels

DAYTON — University of Dayton running back Ben Shappie didn't have to keep track of his touchdown tally because his offensive linemen were doing it for him.

"They kept telling me about it," Shappie said after his five-TD day. "The O-line and all those guys kept telling me to get in the end zone, and I kept saying it was all because of them."

Shappie tied a UD and Pioneer Football League single-game record for TDs in a 42-0 win over visiting Campbell University before 4,128 spectators Saturday, Oct. 4, scoring on runs of 3, 1, 2, 21 and 3 yards.

But the senior from Versailles didn't realize he had matched the all-time Flyer mark — joining Richard Punch (1916), Gary Kosins ('70), Kevin Hofacre ('89), Pat Hofacre ('91) and Judd Mintz ('93) — until being told by a reporter afterward.

"Oh, wow," he said, "I had no idea. That's quite an accomplishment, but I don't feel like I really deserved that."

Maybe Shappie was feeling a little sheepish about the record because the holes in the Campbell defense were so plentiful. The Buies Creek, N.C., school is in its first year of football after a 58-year hiatus, and its oldest players are redshirt sophomores.

The Flyers (4-1, 1-0 PFL) amassed 559 total yards, while allowing just 85. Shappie had his first 100-yard game, finishing with 124 yards on 17 rushes.

"It went like I'd hope it would," UD coach Rick Chamberlin said. "We knew going into the game that physically Campbell was a little behind us because they're a first-year program."

Defense has its way

Defensive lineman Sean Heenan hobbled to the sidelines after making a vicious tackle in the first quarter, having knocked the wind out of himself. But he didn't stay there long.

"I took a knee (near the bench) and all I could think about was, 'What's going on with my guys out there?' ... I was like, I can't take another play off. I wanted to get back out there," he said.

Heenan and his mates put on a dominant display, rarely allowing the two Campbell quarterbacks even to plant their feet after a three-step drop. The Camels (1-5, 0-3) had just four first downs and crossed midfield only once, getting stopped on fourth-and-1 at the UD 43.

"They're just a good defensive team," Campbell coach Dale Steele said. "Physically, they're probably the most challenging team of the three we've played in the league.

"They're solid offensively," he added. "They don't wow you, they just make first downs."

Backward, forward

After reaching the Campbell 9-yard line in the second quarter, the Flyers shifted into reverse.

False start and clipping penalties put them first-and-goal at the 30, but they still cracked the end zone on Shappie's 1-yard plunge on fourth down.

Freshmen Justin Millio and Tyler Hujik led the Flyers with four receptions apiece. QB Rob Florian finished 16-of-28 passing for 244 yards and one TD, but he also had three interceptions.
