Williams' Flyer debut delayed by broken bone
Thursday, October 16, 2008
DAYTON — Freshman Paul Williams could miss some initial workouts when the University of Dayton starts basketball practice Friday, Oct. 17, because of a broken bone in his left foot.
The 6-foot-3, 213-pound shooting guard — who is expected to compete for playing time this season — has been hobbling for about six weeks because of a fracture near his big toe. He has skipped most preseason drills.
"Paul needs another week or so (of rest)," UD coach Brian Gregory said. "It's very similar to what Charles Little did last year."
Little broke a bone in his right foot during a loss to UMass last January but made a quicker-than-expected recovery and missed just three games.
Williams finished third in the voting for Michigan's Mr. Basketball award, which was won by Xavier recruit Brad Redford. The left-hander from Detroit Renaissance High School averaged 23.8 points and 6.1 rebounds as a senior.
UD women take court
Optimism abounds for the Flyers women's basketball team despite heavy graduation losses. UD notched a school-record 25 wins last season, received votes in the AP poll at one point and tied UConn for the longest winning streak in the nation at 16 games.
Sophomore forward Kristin Daugherty, who made the A-10 all-rookie team, and junior forward Kendel Ross, the Flyers' top sub a year ago, are expected to lead the way. The Flyers also have been bolstered by a recruiting class ranked 39th nationally by the Blue Star Report.
UD begins practice Friday and will hold an open intrasquad scrimmage at UD Arena at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.
The Flyer men will hold their annual Blue-and-Red scrimmage afterward at 11 a.m.
Soccer player honored
Alex Torda was named A-10 men's soccer player of the week after tallying two goals in the Flyers' 4-3 win over Richmond and following that with a goal and game-winning assist in a 3-1 victory over George Washington. The Flyers (8-2-1) are at Charlotte and St. Louis this weekend.
Five other UD athletes earned weekly honors from the league: Zach Glassman and Michael Oberschmidt in men's golf; Maureen Bulgrin and Elissa Mason in women's cross country; and Valerie Akerhielm in volleyball.
The six awards are the most UD has had in the same week during fall sports and are the most by any team in the A-10 this season.
