UD 'outworked, outhustled, outscrapped' by Creighton

OMAHA, Neb. — The University of Dayton's dogged defense was finally defanged, and its undefeated record is down the drain.

After the men's basketball team held its first eight opponents to 27.8 percent shooting from 3-point land — the 24th-best mark among 330 teams nationally — the Flyers were carved up by Creighton 77-59 before 15,418 fans Wednesday, Dec. 10.

The Bluejays (6-2) made 13-of-25 3-pointers and shot 44.2 percent from the field — the first foe to top 40 percent against UD. Rob Lowery had 15 points, and Mickey Perry 10 for the Flyers (8-1).

"They made a couple shots early, and that gave them confidence," UD's London Warren said. "After that, the rim got as big as the ocean. You've got to give them credit, but we didn't defend the way we're supposed to."

The Flyers were worried about Creighton's four-out-one-in offense, knowing dribble penetrations could lead to kickouts for open 3s. And their fears were realized. The Bluejays, who have made 11 straight postseason appearances and were the preseason Missouri Valley Conference favorites, finished the first half 8-of-14 from the arc for a 39-26 lead.

They swished 3s on their first two possessions of the second half on their way to an 8-0 run for a 21-point bulge. The Flyers couldn't get closer than 12 the rest of the way.

"We didn't defend," UD coach Brian Gregory said. "Give them credit. They made shots. But when you go on the road, you can't rebound like that and defend like that or you're going to get it handed to you, and that's exactly what happened."

Star of the game

Call senior guard Booker Woodfox the Atlantic 10 menace. He made 7-of-9 3-pointers in his team's last outing against Saint Joseph's and made 5-for-8 against the Flyers while scoring 21 points.

Stat of the game

UD, which went into the game shooting 42.1 percent from the field and 29.4 on 3s, needed a sizzling night to be competitive and couldn't get untracked. They finished 35.7 from the field and made only 7-of-20 3-pointers.

Quote

"They outworked us, outhustled us and outscrapped us. They killed us on the glass (42-31), and we didn't defend. If you don't do those things, you're not going to beat a quality team on the road," Gregory said.
