DAYTON — As part of a marketing promotion, the University of Dayton's men's basketball team will be wearing alternate baby-blue uniforms when UD hosts North Carolina-Greensboro on Saturday, Dec. 20, and throwback jerseys against St. Bonaventure on Jan. 25, which might cause a few groans among Flyers fans.
The team wore alternate jerseys against Massachusetts last year and dropped an 82-71 decision. When the Flyers broke out throwback jerseys against Duquesne, they suffered a 63-61 setback.
Reminded of those outcomes, UD coach Brian Gregory said, "It wasn't the jerseys."
UD's 1984 Elite Eight team will be honored at the St. Bonaventure game to celebrate the 25th anniversary of that season. The Flyers will be wearing uniforms from that era.
Flyers' shooting shaky
The Flyers are last in the Atlantic 10 in 3-point shooting at 29.9 percent and 12th in overall field-goal percentage at 41.6. They're ranked 245th out of 330 Division I teams nationally in both categories.
"At times, we've shot the ball well. At other times, we've not shot well. But we make just enough, it seems like," Gregory said. "And we do a good enough job with our glass coverage to make up for some of the times where we struggle offensively."
The Flyers are second in the league in rebound margin at plus-6.6 per game.
"Sometimes our best offense is a missed shot. Just chuck that thing up there and go get it," Gregory said. "Hey, I've been around a lot of teams like that and seen a lot of teams that have been successful that way."
UD notes
• The Flyers have improved from the free-throw line, shooting 68.6 percent this season after hitting at a 64.1 clip last year.
• Only about 900 tickets are left for the Flyers game against UNC-Greensboro.
• Retiring UD Athletic Director Ted Kissell will be honored at halftime of Saturday's game.
