About Richmond
The Spiders went 6-2 in the second half of the conference season, beating Xavier 80-75. Point guard Kevin Anderson, the A-10 rookie of the year last season, was a second-team all-league pick this year. Back court mate David Gonzalvez was one of five players named honorable mention all-league. The Spiders dropped a 69-63 decision at Dayton on Feb. 14.
About Dayton
The Flyers' strength-of-schedule was wallowing around the 200 mark nationally earlier in the season, but it ranked as the 95th-toughest at the end of A-10 play. UD is 23rd in the RPI with an 8-3 record against the top 100. Marcus Johnson could have something to prove after being relegated to honorable-mention all-league. He was named co-MVP of the Flyers with Chris Wright, an A-10 second-team pick.
FYI
The Flyers are considered one of 35 "locks" for the NCAA tournament as of Wednesday, according to ESPN's renowned "bracketologist" Joe Lunardi. With an additional 12 automatic qualifiers from lower-ranked conferences having already punched their tickets, that leaves 28 bubble teams fighting for eight spots, by his calculations. The Flyers probably wouldn't have to sweat out Selection Sunday with a win today, but it apparently isn't a requirement to make the field.
Quote, unquote
"That first game, once you get a bye, is always the most difficult. ... One thing you know is you're playing a team that came off a win — and an important one, usually," UD coach Brian Gregory said.
