UD women fall at buzzer in WNIT
Sunday, March 22, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Dayton women's basketball team saw one the best seasons in program history end with a last-second tip-in by Indiana as the Flyers lost a second-round Women's National Invitation Tournament game 59-57 on Sunday, March 22.
Dayton never led and was defeated at the buzzer after a long pass from Kim Roberson and tip by Whitney Thomas.
UD junior Kendel Ross tied the game on a 3-pointer with 0.8 on the clock, but UD never got the chance to battle it out in overtime.
Indiana threw the ball in to half-court, but an inadvertent whistle stopped play with a fraction of a second on the clock. The Hoosiers were able to inbound the ball and Roberson found Thomas for the game-winner.
"I'm disappointed that our season ends like this," UD coach Jim Jabir said. "It's not fair to our kids. I felt that in spite of our youth we were good enough to win the game. We overcame their pressure and our turnovers. The officials did not give me any explanation."
The Flyers were led by three players in double figures: Kristin Daugherty (14 points), De'Sarae Chambers (10), and Kayla Moses (10). UD's bench outscored IU's reserves 22-2.
"I am very proud of our youngsters and it's unfortunate that an inadvertent whistle with 0.6 seconds left called the game," Jabir said. "It was an amazing pass and shot, but it should have never got to that."
UD finished at 21-14 for back-to-back 20-win seasons.
