Duggins, Brown struggle again
Sunday, November 23, 2008
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — While the outcome camouflaged some good things the Wright State Raiders did on Saturday, Nov. 22, it did not hide the fact junior guards Vaughn Duggins and Todd Brown combined for 12 points and 4-for-20 shooting.
For the Raiders to do well this year, those two have to shoot better than that, and expectations are, they will.
In two losses so far (including the 70-68 overtime loss to Central Michigan), Duggins and Brown are a combined 11-for-39 (28 percent).
They may not be off the mark as far as we think. Duggins just missed a shot from inside the 3-point line at the buzzer in regulation, and Brown rimmed out a halfcourt shot that would have won the game at the buzzer in overtime.
Bench does well
Sophomore N'Gai Evans played his best game with 4-for-8 shooting and a couple of rebounds, but coach Brad Brownell looked over at the two lines he considers most important for his point guards and said he needs improvement there. Evans had three turnovers and no assists.
Senior forward Gavin Horne also had a big game with five rebounds and five points. In all, the Raiders collected 26 points from the bench.
Tough shots
"Their kids made some tough shots," Brownell said. "Jeremy Allen (22 points) made some tough shots, and that's the best our guys can do to guard him."
Two for one
Monday's game against Miami will feature two-for-one pricing on seats. The Raiders have won the last two games against the RedHawks, both by a point on last-second shots.
Crowd didn't show
Some graduate students tried to entice the school population to turn out in record numbers for the game to raise money for the American Red Cross, but were well short of filling the 5,200-seat Rose Arena. A crowd of 1,242 showed up.
Exam week finished
Junior center Ronnie Thomas, a social sciences education major, had three exams last week in Late Antiquity (about the Roman Empire), Colonial Latin America and the History of Sociology Thought.
That ended finals for the Raiders, who next have classes on Jan. 5.
Long ride for a tape
Since NCAA regulations prohibit teams from scouting on the road, and Thursday's CMU at Chicago State game was not on television, WSU Administrative Assistant Lucas McKay and Manager D.J. Wyrick were dispatched to Chicago on Thursday to pick up a tape after the game.
They drove in Thursday afternoon, had a pizza, picked up the tape as soon as the game was finished and drove back, arriving about 4 a.m. Friday. They were at the 9 a.m. practice and on the bus by noon for the five-hour drive to Mount Pleasant.
They said the pizza was great.
