Miami shuts down Wright State

FAIRBORN — A major lineup change did not result in a scoring change for Wright State Monday, Nov. 24, as the Raiders not only lost for the third time in three games, they had trouble scoring at all.

With their lowest scoring total since 1999, the Raiders lost 55-37 to Miami, shooting only 26.5 percent in front of 5,517 at the Nutter Center.

A late-arriving crowd due to a traffic jam didn't miss much as the two teams combined for five points — Miami led 3-2 — after more than five minutes of play.

It was more of the same at the end, when WSU failed to score in the final 5:37.

"We couldn't score for a long time tonight," WSU coach Brad Brownell said. "It wasn't just the last five minutes. It was most of the game."

Lineup change

Guards John David Gardner, N'Gai Evans and Troy Tabler started in place of Vaughn Duggins, Will Graham and Todd Brown. Duggins and Brown had been sick and couldn't practice Sunday, but Brownell said the changes were coming regardless.

"Our three (starters) haven't played very well," Brownell said. "They're not playing the way they need to. I told my guys if they're not playing well, somebody else is going to get some time. So certainly this was a time Todd and Vaughn and Will didn't need to start."

Foul stops run

Wright State trailed by 18 in the second half when Gardner scored on a tip-in to close the gap to 44-34. At the other end, Gardner appeared to have Miami's Michael Bramos stopped as Bramos left his feet and lost the ball.

Instead, the referee called Gardner for a three-shot foul, all of which Bramos made.

"That was the ref's decision," Gardner said. "I can't say I agree with that, but he's got the whistle."

"We're 0-3," Duggins said. "It's not like we've got to start panicking right now. We've got a lot of season left. We can go on a 28-game winning streak. Who knows?"
