Wayne savors emotional victory

Wayne's 14-13 win at Troy on Friday night made coach Jay Minton feel like he had "just won the national championship."

"From where we started, losing at Cincinnati St. Xavier and then losing a game because of a strike, to this win and probably getting in the playoffs — that's a heck of a comeback for these kids," Minton said.

Wayne finished the regular season 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference Central Division, good for second behind Centerville.

The win also unofficially puts Wayne in the Division I, Region 4 playoffs for the fourth time in five years.

A 1-yard run by Troy Gilmer in the first quarter and a 65-yard sprint by Joe Gilford on the first offensive play of the third gave Wayne a 14-0 lead on a muddy track at Troy Memorial Stadium.

Troy came back with two Dustin Messer scores. After the second, with 1:01 to go, Troy coach Steve Nolan went for the two-point conversion and the win but Messer was stopped up the middle.

Trotwood 14, Vandalia 0: The Rams (7-3, 3-2 GWOC North) clinched a playoff spot by blanking the Aviators despite losing four fumbles and getting just 58 yards through the air from area passing leader Domonick Britt. The teams combined for 10 turnovers.

Carroll 33, Cin. McNicholas 23: Senior Eric McComas rushed for 245 yards and four touchdowns and sophomore brother David had 134 yards with one score.

Eric capped the Carroll scoring with an 83-yard run in the fourth quarter. Already assured of a Division II playoff spot, the Patriots concluded the regular season 9-1 overall, 6-1 in the GCL North.

Franklin 7, Oakwood 6: The Wildcats finished 6-4, three games better than last year, while possibly knocking Oakwood out of the Division IV playoffs.

The big play came when Chad Schrock's tipped pass over the middle fell into the hands of Tyler Fenner, who went 79 yards for a second-quarter score.

Monroe 34, Northridge 0: Playoff qualifier Monroe (9-1, 6-0) held Northridge (3-7, 2-4) to a single yard of total offense in the first half and won the SWBL Buckeye Division. Tyler Osterman scored a pair of TDs and threw for three.

Greenon 20, Graham 0: Steve Jackson's two first-half TD runs helped Greenon (7-3, 5-0) clinch the Mad River Division of the Central Buckeye Conference.

Tri-County North 25, Bethel 0: A Division V playoff appearance is the prize for Tri-County North (9-1, 8-1 Cross County Conference), its first postseason berth since 1994. Matt Zumstein rushed for 184 yards on 24 carries and scored three TDs.

Valley View 20, Brookville 8: The Spartans ended their worst season since 1990 on a high note.

Stebbins 20, Northwestern 13: Stebbins finished with three straight wins after starting 0-7.

Dunbar 24, Meadowdale 0: Quarterback Norris Cole threw a 73-yard TD pass to NaRonn Goddard and Goddard added an 85-yard interception return.

Fort Loramie 35, Ridgemont 6: The winners had fast times at Ridgemont High as Brandon Philpot rushed for 111 yards and three TDs. Ridgemont had 3 yards of offense.

Ansonia 37, National Trail 7: Eric Beisner scored three TDs and rushed for 138 yards on 17 carries for Ansonia (6-4, 6-3 Cross County Conference).

Covington 43, Bradford 0: Covington (10-0, 9-0) clinched the Cross County Conference championship.

Sidney 7, Greenville 0: The Yellow Jackets finished a disappointing season (3-7) on an uptick. Mike Williams scored the only TD on a 4-yard run in the first quarter. The Green Wave (1-9) had eight fumbles.
