GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW

Four returning starters boost D-III champ Anna

Following a perfect 2006 season that included a Division III state title, improvement is the preseason theme for the Anna High School girls volleyball team.

"We know our offense can produce," Anna coach Karen Zumberger said. "We're focusing on improving our defense and passing so we can get the offense going."

Four-hour practices filled with drill work aim to improve the Rockets' passing and defense.

Last season was a banner year for area volleyball. Alter won the D-II state title, Anna the D-III crown and New Knoxville fell in the D-IV title game. The Knights graduated all their '06 starters.

Anna returns four starters in juniors Kelsie Barhorst, Laura Garrett and Ariane Billing, as well as senior Kelli Barhorst.

With all their returning firepower, Zumberger thinks the Rockets have a good chance at another state title.

"Teams want to hand you the first loss," Zumberger said. "If we work hard and don't succumb to pressure ... another title is a doable goal."

First, Anna has to conquer the Shelby County League, which Zumberger considers to be improved.

"It won't be an easy road," Kelli Barhorst said. "I definitely think we're capable of making the final four again."

If Anna makes another deep tournament run, it will be largely a result of the continued dominance by Ohio State-bound Kelli Barhorst. The powerful 6-foot-2 middle hitter led her team to a 30-0 record last year. She had 23 kills in the state title game — an exclamation point on the end of her All-Ohio season.

"I want to be a powerhouse this year," she said. "I can't ease up. I have to always work harder."

Kelli Barhorst's goals for the season are best explained by Anna's team mantra — total domination.
