Worthy to use sacking prowess at Michigan St.

Wayne defensive tackles goes with Spartans because of defensive system, former teammate Ringer.

Wayne High School sack master Jerel Worthy has taken himself off the market, verbally committing to Michigan State University.

The 6-foot-2, 285-pound defensive tackle chose the Spartans over Nebraska, North Carolina State, West Virginia and Cincinnati.

"They lead the nation in sacks and Coach (Mark) Dantonio has transformed the defense up there," Worthy said. "It seemed like a good fit for me. Former teammate Javon Ringer is a key player there and that also drew me in. Javon was like a mentor to me when I was at C-J (Chaminade-Julienne)."

Worthy, who played his freshman and sophomore years at C-J and his junior and this his senior year at Wayne, leads the Warriors' run-stuffing defense with 10 sacks.

"Jerel has great explosion off the ball and the ability to get to the quarterback," Wayne coach Jay Minton said. "He has those instincts you just don't coach."
