Everything on the line between Carroll, Alter

With all the bad and sad sports stories popping up, it's nice to see a good old-fashioned rivalry take the stage.

Tonight's Division II high school girls basketball regional final at Vandalia Butler features Alter against Carroll. The Girls Greater Cincinnati League rivals split two regular-season games.

"They beat us at home and we came back and did the same thing on the road," Carroll coach Rob Berry said. "That's just a very, very, very big rival for us. It's going to be a toss-up.

"It will be a real hard, man-to-man GGCL, hard-nosed game and the refs will probably let it go."

The Knights won the first matchup by a wide margin. But Carroll claimed the tighter second game and hopes to avenge a loss to Alter in last year's tournament.

"It's going to be a close one again," Carroll's Brogan Berry said. "We lost to them last year, so, obviously, we want revenge again. We're just going to play our hardest and give it everything we have."

Sure, this isn't A-1 trash-talk material. That's OK. It's truthful. One team will be devastated at watching its rival going to state. The other ecstatic.

Alter looked nearly unbeatable early in its regional semifinal win against Columbus Eastmoor. But Alter coach Christina Hart wasn't too worried about her girls getting wrapped up in that victory.

"That's a rival game," Hart said. "They beat us the last time we played. I don't think we'll have to do a lot to get their attention."

Finally, on-court drama.
