COLLEGE CONNECTION
Butler, Carroll grads are OSU volleyball captains
Saturday, May 10, 2008
After two years playing at Tennessee and sitting out a year after transferring, Chelsea Noble (Vandalia Butler) has been named a co-captain on Ohio State's 2008 women's volleyball team.
Noble and Carroll High School's Ashley Hughes will be the first captains for new coach Geoff Carlston. Both are sophomores, but Noble will be a junior (eligibility) this fall.
Extras
"We are probably the only program in the nation that has two sophomores as captains, but the reality is they are two of our most experienced players on the team," Carlston told the school's Web site.
"They have the respect of their teammates because they reflect the hard work, competitiveness and selflessness that are necessary components to becoming a championship team."
See tops Borchers at Owens
Jeff See (Middletown) was named Big Ten track athlete of the week after he ran the 1,500 meters in 3 minutes, 40.86 seconds at last week's Jesse Owens Track Classic in Columbus.
The Ohio State junior met an Olympic B standard (missing the A standard by 1.86 seconds), set a track record and established the season's Big Ten best in the event.
Miami's Patrick Sovacool was second in 3:45.96 while Penn State's Sam Borchers (Yellow Springs) was third in 3:47.42.
• In the 400 at the same meet, Ohio State's Stephen Robinson (Trotwood-Madison) was eighth in 47.79 and OSU's Chad Balyo (Springboro) was 17th in the 3,000 steeplechase with a 9:06.82.
On campus
• Lincoln Memorial University third baseman Sara Henn (Fairmont) was named 2008 Daktronics South Atlantic Region softball player of the year. She hit .487 with 13 homers and 57 RBIs for the 32-16 Railsplitters.
• Xavier tennis player Christie Pleiman (Chaminade-Julienne) was part of the Musketeers' Atlantic 10 runner-up team. Pleiman won the team's first Jim Brockoff award, which is given to the player displaying intangibles in tennis, academics and character.
• Dayton golfer Chris Woeste (Alter) was the Atlantic 10 rookie of the year. He also was named to the all-conference team as UD finished second in the A-10 tournament.
• Ohio Wesleyan golfer Jordan Benner (Beavercreek) tied for fourth as an individual, and his team won the North Coast Athletic Conference golf tournament. The team qualified for the NCAA Division III national championships.
