MIDDLETOWN — Indianapolis Warren Central (Ind.) figures to be a formidable foe for Middletown in Week 2 of the upcoming high school football season. The two will meet at 2 p.m. Aug. 30 in the second of four games to be played at Paul Brown Stadium as part of the Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series, which officially announced this year's schedule on Tuesday, July 1.
The Warriors became the first Indiana high school to win four consecutive state titles when they won the top spot in Division 5A from 2003-06.
"We're extremely honored to have the opportunity to play in such a prestigious event," MHS Athletic Director Gary Lebo said. "Some of the top programs in the country are playing in this."
Other games on the Aug. 30 Herbstreit schedule in Cincinnati feature Elder vs. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) at 11 a.m., Colerain vs. McKeesport (Pa.) at 5 p.m. and St. Xavier vs. Prattville (Ala.) at 8 p.m.
The Middies were originally set to play host to Massillon Washington in Week 2 this season. Since Massillon also is a participant in the Herbstreit event, both schools agreed to reschedule for Week 2 in 2009 at Barnitz Stadium.
The loss of a home game this year didn't seem to bother Lebo.
"Our first two games are at neutral sites," Lebo said, referring also to Middletown's opening game against Elder in the Crosstown Showdown at Nippert Stadium. "The money we are getting under contract will help us offset those costs."
For the Herbstreit event, Lebo said in addition to the stipend Middletown will receive from the contract, MHS also will receive a percentage of ticket sales over 500 tickets.
"We have a great opportunity to make that benefit us," Lebo said. "We hope the community will support us in that effort."
Tickets cost $14 per adult ($16 day of event) and $10 per student/youth fans ($12 day of event) for a three- or four-game session. More information on ticket sales through the MHS athletic department will be announced soon.
