Beavercreek loses player to Wayne

What does Cody Smith's transfer mean for both teams?

CINCINNATI — Wayne High School football coach Jay Minton has a new linebacker from Beavercreek via Graham.

On hand for a press conference about Wayne's appearance in the Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series, Minton confirmed the transfer addition of Cody Smith.

Smith grew up in Beavercreek and had a stellar youth wrestling career. His freshman year, Smith attended Graham, which has open enrollment. They drove back and forth each day.

Smith transferred back to Beavercreek as a sophomore. As a junior, Smith was third in Division I as a heavyweight at the state wrestling meet. Beavercreek plays at Wayne Oct. 10.

"They just walked in and said, they were not happy with (Beavercreek) coach Scott Clodfelter," Minton said Friday, July 25. "They had their reasons.

"I don't know if he's a D-I (football scholarship) kid. I know he wants to try to be one. He moves well, runs around well, looks physical. Any time we've had good wrestlers, we've done well."

Wayne's matchup

Minton took a break from his team's training at Higher Ground Campground in Indiana to attend the press conference. The same couldn't be said for his Herbstreit opponent, East St. Louis (Ill.) Darren Sunkett, who couldn't make it to Cincinnati.

But Minton said the Flyers (11-2 in 2007) are similar to the Warriors.

"They've got two receivers that I believe are in the top 100 of the country," Minton said. "They've got a junior quarterback. They're very quick. Very fast. Maybe we can trip them out there or something."

Wayne plays East St. Louis at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31 — the middle game of three at Paul Brown Stadium.

Trotwood to Texas

Trotwood-Madison coach Maurice Douglass also faces a similar foe in the 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 matchup against Arlington Bowie in Texas Stadium.

Bowie had 10 NCAA Division I signees last season and Trotwood had 12, so both teams are reloading — though Bowie's quarterback and safety both have committed to Kansas.

"I think they did a great job matching us up," Bowie coach Kenny Perry said. "It's going to be like an Olympic track meet because they've got some kids that can go and we've got some kids that can go."

Douglass said he's glad his team can experience playing on the Dallas Cowboys field.

"For our kids to be able to be on a stage like this is an outstanding chance for them," he said. "We're excited about it.

"Texas has great football players and great teams down there. We're just excited to be involved in this event."

Douglass, who played at Texas Stadium during his NFL career, had one favorite recollection.

"Slamming Emmitt Smith one time coming through the (line) on a goal-line situation," Douglass said. "I caught him about two yards deep on his side of the ball. I was excited about that."

Quote of the day

Bowie coach Kenny Perry talked about the plane ride to Cincinnati with Cedar Hill (Texas) coach Joey McGuire, whose team battles Cincinnati La Salle.

"We were kind of flying through the clouds and I looked over at coach McGuire and kind of had a look of shock on his face, and I said, what, are you scared to land?

"He said, 'No, I saw a football field.' I said what's so big about that? He said, 'I didn't think they played football anywhere outside the state of Texas.' "

McGuire jumped out of his seat and said: "That's not true. That's already on the chalkboard here."

School levies. When: one of the largest high schools in OH Can’t even hold a home track meet. When: Community groups believes that the football stadium is only used 5 times a year. When: half of the football staff is 19 to 25 yrs of age. When: The future of hard working student athletes are held hostage by the egos of administrators and coaches. Smith was forced out of Bcreek. Forced to leave his home to follow his dream. He will shine at Wayne and Wayne is happy to have him.

Confused- I can’t address what goes on in Clodfelters head. once again just the facts. You obviously are not a creek football insider or you wouldn’t be so confused. You are right the system at Bcreek is broken. The whole system. It’ broken when: Football players suffer 1st and 2nd degree burns to their hands and knees doing up-downs on the asphalt in mid August while coaches ridicule them for crying out in pain. It’s broken when: an affluent community year after year refuses to pass

PS - Not that it is anyones business but Yes Cody and his Father live in Huber. Cody is just looking for better opportunities - not breaking rules. Also I would like to know what other kids the family as moved - If you know the family, you would know this is a big fat lie. Get a life and and quit talking unless you know the facts. PSS - they did not build a Million Dollar Mansion either. And who cares if they did. Please - don’t let your jealousy manifest in lies and untruths.

This makes me sick to read all of this from you about Cody Smith. Cody is a hard worker and an asset to ANYONE’s TEAM. He is very disciplined and works hard to accomplish his dreams. He does EXCELLENT in school and is a GREAT ATHLETE. You should all be supportive for someone who wants the best for himself and strives to reach his goals. More kids should be like him and “WORK FOR IT” instead of “EXPECTING IT” At least Cody can say he did it himself if he does go D1. Good Luck Cody!

just the facts - okay, I’ll take your word for it. But I still don’t see why a coach would do that. Looks bad for him, looks bad for the program, looks bad for the district.

That mess aside, the system is broken when a high school player can change schools at will. Be it mom and dad “moving” to a new district or the supers signing off, this really isn’t the spirit of amateur sports. And most importantly, his education has to suffer with these moves.

I am glad somebody filled in the blanks. I was very curious about the statement in article, “they were not happy with (Beavercreek) coach Scott Clodfelter,”. That should be the subject of the follow-up article. I have heard about several strange things Clodfelter has done at BC. With him, when something goes wrong, it is because of someone else. Domicone was an aberration. He’s had great physical tools and talent since middle school. It had nothing to do with Clodfelter’s coaching or contacts.

hey “Confused”-Clodfelter did deliver Smiths mail,he just let it sit in his office for weeks before he gave it to him.Clodfelter admitted his mistake yet did it again a month later. Smith received numerous invitations and tickets to spring camps and games that were useless because the dates had expired. Imagine a 17 yr old kid getting invited to a big 10 spring game only to find that the game was the week before, then another and another. Players are not the problem at Bcreek

Hey ‘no one’ - seems if Clodfelter had a lot of kids getting looks from D1 schools, well that would help his rep. How does holding a kid back help a coach’s rep? And if he didn’t pass on all these letters, how do you know he had them? Now I’m not a big fan of Clodfelter (can he call a play other than running up the middle?) but your post really doesn’t make much sense.

I am sick of any inference that our Jay Minton “recruits” players form outside the district. In a community the size of Huber, Coach Minton merely needs to flex his AD powers to assure that everything in Huber is geared toward his royal decree that football shall rule, and that other sports will sacrifice for his vision of immortality. (He does throw the inferior sports an occasional bone in a lame effort to pretend to show “fairness”.) PS Schneider was a better coach.

Cody has been trying to get a D1 offer and I’m sure everyone here knows that unless you are a top notch prospect the way you get one is by camping at as many schools that invite you. Clodfelter had multiple letters inviting Smith to camps at Big Ten schools (including Wisconsin, Indiana & Ohio State at the least) and just didn’t pass them on to Cody and his family. Someone should ask Clodfelter why he is more concerned about his reputation than helping one of his kids.

Carrolldad, read my other post. I already covered that angle.

I guarantee this will be the last move of Cody’s high school football career. Minton does not need to recrute, I plan to do that for him. Anyone want to go in with me on a business plan to invest in sub-prime appartments for rent in H.H.? We simply send direct market brochures to the responsible parents (like cody’s) of star atheletes that only want to do the best for their child.

Mark and Old Coach, As long as they have “moved” into an apartment in Huber, the super has nothing to do with “signing off”. Morrison has enabled nothing. Cody’s dad will be smarter and turn more lights on than Shaw’s dad.

By Old Coach

July 28, 2008 12:01 AM | Link to this

Thanks Mark. I forgot about that one. I just thought that the Sup. only signed off in extreme circumstances like the Mathews girl that transfered from Stivers to Beavercreek because Dayton cut tennis and she was being strongly looked at by colleges. Sounds like Denny is trying to help sabotage the program. The Dommicone example was great. If the kid is good enough and has their crap together, they’ll be found. Lots of examples out there.

WayneALum - Do they teach grammar?

Old Coach - As long as both Superintendents sign off on the transfer, the kid can play. Sounds like Denny Morrison is Cody’s enabler.

Finally, seems Zach Domicone got at D1 look while playing a Beavercreek. Guess the good ones do, no matter where they are playing.

My question is, has this kids parents moved to the Wayne district? If not I believe the rules are that he would have to sit out a year of athletics.

By WayneALum

July 27, 2008 8:28 AM | Link to this

realize that when camp starts. Practice is more intense and everyday you are fighting for a starting spot and thats why Wayne has been one of the best teams since Coach Minton took over. With that being said good luck to Cody. GO WAYNE!!!

July 27, 2008 8:22 AM | Link to this

I have two statements to make first. I played at Wayne and played under coach Minton and this thing i do know is that he doesnt recruit athletes from different schools. He doesnt have to do that players come to Wayne because they know they are going to get D-1 looks and they know they are going to win. Second, i dont about the Cody but i know when i do talk to the coaching staff they will let me know about him but he better have is A game because trust me Wayne is not Bevercreek and he will

By Scott

July 26, 2008 9:38 PM | Link to this

Recruiting??? Sounds more like this guy just quit on another school and walked in the door. Poor kid is already developing a reputation as a “ME” guy and not a team player. That doesn’t exactly raise the value of his stock in the college market. Nevertheless, I don’t see where this situation fits the label of recruitment by Wayne.

By Bill

OSHAA should invoke the rules for High School athletics that many other states have . “Intrastate High School transferees are ineligible for competitive athletics for one year after the transfer. That will diminish the recruiting among High Schools.

Transfer is big plus for Wayne wrestling and big loss for Beavercreek wrestling

As far as football goes…no real impact for either team. He’ll be a backup at Wayne and easily replaced at Beavercreek.

Tony Dee,

Yes there are many types of people in Huber Heights School System. You have them all of the way down to 0 income all the way up to upper class income. I think this is one of the brightest spots for kids attending Wayne High School. Huber Heights is probably the biggest melting pots in Ohio. What else is better for the future of your kids then to learn how to get along with the whole spectrum of everyday society.

Cody Smith is a young man who is willing to work hard and make himself the best he can be. His family and friends support his ambitions. Consider applauding any HS athlete who pushes himself to achieve a goal.

The first thing I want to say is….it is absolutely no one’s business but Cody and his parents what they decide to do. My feelings are that every parent does what they think is best for their kid. If they feel this is best for him and Cody agrees then leave them alone. No….I am not a part of the Smith family. I get tired of other parents in the community judging other parents. Worry about your own kid and let Cody’s parents worry about him.

First, if this kids parents built a million dollar mansion they can probably afford college so he doesn’t need a scholarship. Does Wayne have open enrollment? Whoever said Wayne has better academics is wrong. They have thugs, sluts, homies and idiots there.

I doubt very seriously that the Smith’s are moving to Huber as they just built a mini-mansion in an upscale section of Beavercreek. This is not their only child that they have moved/removed from a program so it is definitely the parents that are pulling this crap. Look at the transfers over the past years - no recruiting? One last comment - you KNOW that these are STUDENT Athletes and everyone knows that the Academics at Wayne are far superior to Beavercreek!

The OSHAA needs to come down hard on recruiting at the high school level. Teams like Wayne, Trotwood, and CJ have been making a mockery of high school sports (especially football) for years.

The superintendents of these school districts are putting team sports performance way ahead of the best interests of the kids who live in the district, and they should be ashamed of themselves.

This is high school not the NFL.

I had to read the article twice to get the intention of the author. Is the article about a student transfer, the Kirk Herbstreit series, or high school wrestling?

I would strongly consider a re-write of the story.

In addition, the meaning and purpose of high school sports seems to be completely lost in an episode like this one.

By Bill

it means this is a slow news day for DDN. This is a kid who is on his 3rd transfer in 4 years and is an unlikely starter for Wayne.

it means it’s sad when parents live vicariously through their kids and their kids get a warped sense of entitlement and perspective given the actions of their parents, who ostensibly are the adults in the equation.

it means this is a kid who will have a rude awakening when he finishes high school and realizes that the world doesn’t owe him anything.

The differance between Trotwood and Wayne is, that kids move to Huber Heights and at Trotwood, the coach brings them in.

Oh wait, just seems to happen when someone wants to play for a winner in Huber Heights.

Ok, this is pathetic. Maybe this kid is just trying to be a star athlete he isn’t. If you are truly a great athlete, you will get noticed at whatever school you are.

Wayne is about as bad as Trotwood anymore with transfers…and that is sad. I hope the kids academics are at least par with his athleticism.

Beavercreek, Graham, Beavercreek, now Wayne - sounds like Cody Smith isn’t happy anywhere.
