Colts cut former Miami, Butler star Josh Betts

Indianapolis — The Indianapolis Colts have waived quarterback Josh Betts, the former Miami University star and Vandalia Butler High School star.
Betts, cut on Thursday, July 24, was hoping to work more with the first team in practice as a result of Peyton Manning's knee surgery, which is expected to keep the Colts' starting quarterback out four to six weeks.
But he became the odd man out Thursday when the Colts announced they had signed two veteran quarterbacks — Quinn Gray, who played for AFC South division rival Jacksonville last season, and Jared Lorenzen, a backup to Peyton's brother Eli with the Super Bowl champion New York Giants.
Manning's longtime backup, Jim Sorgi, now becomes the temporary starter.
Betts had one year of eligibility remaining on the practice squad. He signed as a free agent with the Colts on Jan. 14 after two seasons on the practice squad.
At Miami he passed for 7,029 yards and 54 touchdowns as a two-year starter. He finished his career as the RedHawks' second-ranked passer in completions (541), passing yards and passing TDs.
