Bellbrook — Not even an injury to star offensive lineman Sam Longo and a few technical glitches could put a damper on the opening night of Bellbrook High School's Miami Valley South Stadium. Tailback/kicker Nick Wiget made sure of that.
Wiget, one of the area's best kickers, showed his versatility as he rushed for 56 yards and a pair of touchdowns to pace the Golden Eagles to a 28-0 win over Miamisburg on Friday, Aug. 22. The lead foot kicker also hit all four extra-point attempts and was impressive with deep kickoffs.
"Tonight, we played like a team," Wiget said. "Last year, that was our problem, we didn't play like a team. It was just hard-nosed football, and we took it to them."
Longo, an Ohio State commit and the heart of the young Golden Eagles, was on the sidelines due to a stress fracture in his left foot. It is unknown when the 6-foot-5, 275-pounder will return to the lineup.
"It is going to be something we're going to have to get used to," said Bellbrook coach Kevin Basinger of playing without Longo. "It's going to be a few weeks for sure before he gets back. We're going to miss him, but I think our kids rose to the occasion."
Bellbrook took control in the second quarter with a pair of touchdowns. Wiget hit paydirt just two plays into the quarter with a 3-yard scamper around the right end. Shortly thereafter, the Golden Eagles struck through the air, as quarterback Jay Bucher hit wideout Kyle McKinniss for a 22-yard touchdown.
Wiget found the end zone again in the third quarter, when he bolted 4 yards off left end. He put the finishing touch on an impressive eight-play, 50-yard drive during which the Golden Eagles pounded between the tackles to demoralize the Vikings' defense.

Bellbrook's Nick Wiget ran for 56 yards and a pair of scores Friday, Aug. 22.
