DAYTON — "Restore Past Glory" could be Valley View High School's latest football mantra.
The Spartans are determined to reestablish themselves after two uncharacteristic years (3-7, 5-6). In its opener Friday, Aug. 22, at Welcome Stadium, the Spartans offered a clue at the team's promise, dispatching Thurgood Marshall handily 45-6 before an estimated 2,800 fans.
"We want to put the disappointments behind us," Valley View quarterback Johnny Day said. "We're going to put up a lot of points and take the pressure off our defense. We're going to throw the ball a lot more this season, which makes it fun."
Day completed 12-of-20 passes for 222 yards and four touchdowns and had the run-and-shoot offense humming. His two scoring strikes to wide receiver Luke Donson in the first half set the tone and covered 28 and 51 yards.
"We're a good combo, and Johnny times up his receivers and pulls the trigger," Donson said.
Valley View's stout defense limited Marshall's tightly bunched, double-wing attack to 43 yards on 41 rushes. Leading the charge defensively were Phil Worrell, Jayrd Brown, Jared Henry and Sean Figley. Brown finished the scoring with a 38-yard fumble return.
"Defense rose to the occasion, and we didn't turn the ball over," Valley View coach Jay Niswonger said. "Johnny keeps progressing. He sees the picture slower now when things happen quickly."
Travis Dalton produced 50 yards on nine carries and caught an 8-yard touchdown pass.
"Valley View is a very sound football team and ultra-aggressive on defense," said Marshall assistant coach Chris English, who was filling in for head coach Earl White (out for personal reasons). "Their quarterback was accurate and made some great reads."

Valley View's Travis Dalton tries to move around Thurgood Marshall's Donte McDaniel on Friday, Aug. 22. The Spartans won 45-6.
