TIPP CITY — The season opening match of the girls high school volleyball season with Alter visiting Tippecanoe on Monday, Aug. 25, was set last October.
The contracts were signed long before Tipp eliminated Alter, the 2006 state champion, from the tournament in five sets last year. Long before Tipp advanced to the state semifinals before losing to Columbus Hartley in five sets. Long before Tipp was the pre-season No.1 in the state coaches poll.
Tipp's rise as D-II power in the state and Alter's long-time status as a long-time power (three state titles in last seven years) gave the opener am atmosphere of tournament intensity.
There were few short points as Tipp took the match in five sets, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 24-26 and 15-10. Tipp was particularly effective coming up with digs time and again against at team powerful hitters at all positions.
Evelyn Carus and Abby Dowd each has 23 digs and Cassie Berning 16.
"That was probably the best part of our performance tonight," said coach Pat Carus. "If we had been a little more consistent with our concentration we probably could have won it in three sets. But Alter's tough. They didn't give up and kept coming back.
"This was a great match for an opener. I think it gave both sides a good indication of where their strengths will be and where they have to improve."
Tipp has nine players returning from a squad which went 28-1 last year Berning, an All-Ohio pick last year, had 24 kills, two blocks and two aces to go with her digs. She will play her college volleyball at Bowling Green State University. Dowd, also an All-Ohio selection, added 13 kills. Hallie Donathan had 46 assists and five kills while sophomore Rachel Bruce had three blocks and three aces.
Alter was led by freshman Megan Courtney with 20 digs and nine kills. Brittany Siggins had 15 assists and Kelly Wolff seven blocks.
"The best thing about the match is that we didn't give up," said Alter coach Tina Jasinowski. "We were down five points in every game but the last one but came back to take the lead or win.
"Our biggest problem is that we didn't pass well. We need to really improve on that area if we want to be the type of team we think we can be. It's a good opener for both of us. We're both D-II. I hope we have a chance to see them again in the tournament."
Jackson Center d. New Knoxville 25-19, 25-9, 25-10: The win was the 300th in the 20-year career of Jackson Center coach Kim Metz. Casey Gates led the Tigers with 27 kills in the season-opening match for both teams.
Beavercreek d. Hamilton 25-22, 25-7, 25-17: Cassie Kalman had 12 kills, Andrea Harris 16 assists and Carrie Burger five digs as Creek opened the season with a win.
Girls tennis
Julie Kirkland of The Miami Valley School and Alyssa Ritchie of Waynesville, two of the area's top girls Division II high school tennis players, hooked up in a good early-season match-up Monday, Aug. 25, at Miami Valley.
Kirkland, a senior, came away a 4-6,6-0, 6-0 winner despite having a sour stomach which caused some pauses in the action. Ritchie, a sophomore, won some key points the opening set. In the second and third sets she began to suffer from leg cramps and couldn't get to Kirkland's well-placed shots, especially to her backhand side. Kirkland, a state qualifier in doubles last season, is 6-0 while Ritchie is 5-1.
Miami Valley won the team match, 5-0, and is 8-0 for the season while Waynesville is 4-2.
