DAYTON — The last Treadway may be the best Treadway when it comes to volleyball at Chaminade-Julienne High School.
For the past 14 years, there has been a member of the Treadway family from Vandalia playing girls or boys volleyball at C-J.
Erin, who played at Ohio State and the University of Dayton, graduated in 2000. Sarah, a four-year player at the University of Evansville, was in the class of 2003. Alex, an All-Area boys player, graduated in 2005 and is now at the University of Dayton.
That leaves little sister Lisa, a senior. She is one of the best all-around players in the area and is headed to Miami University on a volleyball scholarship.
Mother Cheryl Treadway, a veteran volleyball coach and official, is diplomatic. She won't make a choice as to which daughter is the best.
"They're all good at different phases of the game," she said. "But Lisa is probably better as a senior all-around than Erin or Sarah.
"That's because she learned a lot from both of them and Alex about the game."
Lisa is equally adept at serving, passing, setting, going for the dig to keep a point alive, hitting the finesse shot or delivering a power kill shot.
"I feel like my understanding of the game is my best asset," she said. "I've grown up around the game watching my sisters play in college. We talk about the little things that go into the game, and why a team or a player does this or that.
"So I can recognize what's happening on the court pretty fast, react and talk to help my teammates get in the right spot to make a play.
"The one area I want to become stronger in is passing. I do OK, but being a great passer really helps your team be better."
Although Treadway is a year-round player (Dayton Juniors in the winter, spring and summer), she still finds time to swim. She swan the 200-meter individual medley 100 breaststroke for C-J in the high school season, This summer, she swam for the Fair Valley Swim Club in North Dayton. She won the 50 breaststroke and was part of the first-place 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams at Greater Dayton Swimming Association meet.
"Swimming is a great break from volleyball and is great for keeping in shape," she said, "Our whole family lives at Fair Valley in the summer. I really love swimming. If I wasn't playing volleyball, I probably would have been a competitive swimmer. When I watched the Olympics, I probably watched more swimming than I did volleyball."
