GERMANTOWN — When they needed it most, the Oakwood Lumberjacks could count on the legs of Robby Sherk.

The senior quarterback scrambled and rambled for 86 yards on 17 carries and one touchdown in the second half as Oakwood High School upset state-ranked (No. 7, Division III) Valley View 28-24 on Friday, Sept. 12.

Sherk's legs and big plays opened up Oakwood's offense in the second and third quarters, leading to 21 unanswered points that erased an early deficit.

"We showed a tremendous amount of heart and hung in there," Oakwood coach Paul Stone said. "We capitalized when we had to."

John Whalen's 35-yard reception from Sherk tied it with 0:16 remaining in the second quarter. The play was set up by a 36-yard gain on a lateral pass from Scott Feldmiller to Connor Charbat.

Oakwood (3-1) struck again to open the second half. Sherk hit Charbat on a 58-yard pass, then hit Feldmiller for a 20-yard reception to set up a 1-yard touchdown run.

Valley View (3-1), the top-ranked team in D-III in the area, answered with a 30-yard field goal by Michael Boyd in the fourth quarter. But Sherk, who played offense, defense and returned kicks, chewed up the clock with his feet and picked up first downs when Oakwood needed them.

"That's not going to change all year," Stone said. "We have eight guys playing both ways. We had to get on their tails a little bit to get them to keep pushing."

Valley View took control early, scoring 21 points in the first quarter. Quarterback John Day connected with Travis Dalton for a 56-yard touchdown pass on Valley View's first drive. Oakwood answered with a Whalen 6-yard touchdown run, but Valley View followed with a 7-yard touchdown reception by Brandon Fox.

Oakwood's punt on the next possession was blocked by Kyle Combs, who recovered in the end zone to give Valley View a 21-7 lead after the first quarter.

"It's not a tough loss — it's a tremendously tough loss," Valley View coach Jay Niswonger said. "This is a team we should have beat. They just made huge plays."

Stone said: "It feels pretty special right now. I don't now how we're going to get them back down to earth by Monday's practice, but it's a good problem to have."
