Spartans feed off Franklin miscues

FRANKLIN — Valley View's defense proved to be too much for the host Franklin Wildcats to handle in a 48-7 win for the Spartans Friday, Oct. 3, at Atrium Stadium.
Valley View (6-1, 3-1 in the Southwest Buckeye League's Southwestern Division) came up with three of five Franklin fumbles and snagged an interception to set the tone.
"The early turnovers killed us," Franklin coach Rodney Roberts said. "We put the ball on the ground, and that's something we haven't done all year. But make no mistake about it, Valley View is the better football team. They just overwhelmed us."
Adding to the Wildcats' misery, the Spartans defense sacked quarterbacks Tyler Wulff and Justin Rickard a combined six times in the game. Roberts said the Valley View defense kept his Wildcats from getting in any kind of an offensive rhythm.
"They come at you from so many different places," Roberts said. "Their size and athletic ability on defense ... we could just never find that rhythm. They're a great football team."
Defensive lineman Jaryd Brown came up with the biggest turnover for the Spartans. With Franklin (4-3, 2-1 SWBL Southwestern) starting off on its own 27-yard line, the ball bounced right into the Spartan defensive lineman's mitts.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Brown then rumbled 27 yards the other way for Valley View's third touchdown of the night.
"Getting turnovers like that makes for a huge momentum swing," Brown said. "And we just feed off of those things. Our defense had some injuries that we had to make up for, and the team just really came through as a defensive unit tonight."
Valley View's Travis Dalton rushed for 67 yards on 12 carries. He also caught four David Day passes for another 67 yards. Day completed 9-of-15 passes for 100 yards with two TD passes. He also rushed for two scores.
"We worked extra hard this week, and my kids really came to play," Valley View coach Jay Niswonger said.
"Both lines played well, but it's hard to single out anybody in this one."
