TIPP CITY — Tecumseh High School football coach Kent Massie can finally rest easy.
On Friday, Oct. 10, his Arrows team did something they hadn't done since 2001 — beat Tippecanoe.
"There was a lot at stake here," Massie said. "The kids have been waiting a long time for this win. It was a tall order for the Arrows, but the kids played awfully well."
The Division II Arrows, ranked No. 7 in the state, used a dominating ground game to beat the D-III third-ranked Red Devils, 26-14, in front of 4,000 fans at Tipp City Park.
The victory also ended Tippecanoe's 26-game regular-season winning streak. The Red Devils' last regular-season loss came to Milton-Union on Aug. 25, 2006.
"We've been trying not to look at this game all year," senior defensive tackle Jacob Emberton said. "We've been trying to take it one game at a time, but it's hard not to see it (on the schedule). It feels great. It feels really great."
Tecumseh (8-0, 3-0 Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail Division) had 261 yards on 51 carries. The Arrows scored 19 points on their first four possessions and didn't punt until 3:57 remained in the third quarter.
Riley Gault scored on two 1-yard touchdown runs, while Karson Williams nailed two field goals.
Kyle Sanning, who rushed 23 times for 99 yards, clinched the win on a 13-yard score with 5:25 remaining, just four plays after senior Allen Comer fumbled on his own 23-yard line.
"We wanted to mix it up a little bit, but they couldn't stop our run, so we decided to keep doing what was working," Massie said. "Our kids won the battle up front. We decided to do what we do best — run the football."
The Red Devils (7-1, 2-1) scored on a 3-yard pass to Comer from Wes March in the second quarter. T.J. Smith added the second touchdown on a 7-yard fumble recovery after Comer fumbled a deep pass from March.
The Arrows shut down Tippecanoe's passing game in the second half, putting constant pressure on March.
After the game, the Arrows waved their patented black skull and crossbones flag in celebration.
"It's a black attack tradition," Emberton said. " It means everything to us."
