BROOKVILLE — Josh Doles is wrapping up his high school football career with style — and some drama. The Brookville High School senior running back carried 15 times for 153 yards and added two touchdowns to help the Blue Devils to a wild 27-20 defeat of Valley View and a 10-0 season Friday, Oct. 24, at Memorial Field.

Doles gave the Southwestern Buckeye League Southwestern Division champions an early 14-0 lead while topping the 1,000-yard mark.

The early scores proved crucial as Brookville had to fight late to keep their perfect record intact. Valley View quarterback Johnny Day threw two late touchdown strikes and the Spartans recovered two onside kicks in the final two minutes.

With 3 seconds left and a chance to tie from the 6-yard line, Day's pass into the end zone went incomplete, icing the game for Brookville.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game," said a relieved Doles. "We wanted that undefeated season."

"In that last five minutes, I thought we were doing everything we could to give it away, but our kids hung tough," Brookville coach Mike Hetrick said. "I'm awful proud of them. That's a great accomplishment for us."

Brookville opened the scoring with 7:01 left in the first quarter when Doles ploughed right up the middle for a 47-yard touchdown run on the team's first play from scrimmage. He added a 70-yard touchdown early in the second quarter.

"All the credit goes to the line," Doles said. "The holes were there."

The touchdowns were the 20th and 21st of the season for Doles. He also had an interception.

Jason Stone added two rushing touchdowns for Brookville, which finished with a perfect regular season for the first time since 1988. The Blue Devils had not beaten division rival Valley View since 2000.

The Spartans (7-3) never got rolling on offense until late. Day finished with three touchdowns, completing 18-of-38 passes for 265 yards.

"We knew we were going to have to put up some points," Hetrick said. "You can only hold them down for so long. They have some weapons."

Both teams had already earned playoff berths.

Valley View linebacker Logan Carpenter was ejected and will miss the Spartans' first playoff game.
