Anna, Marion Local to meet for Round 2

COMMENT: How many teams from each region should make the playoffs?

The Midwest Athletic Conference faces an equivalent to Cincinnati powers Colerain and Moeller facing off in the first round of the Division I playoffs this weekend.

Defending Division V state champion Marion Local (8-2) plays at Anna (9-1) on Friday night, Oct. 31. It's a repeat of the Week 10 game, which the Rockets won 16-6.

"It's a different situation for both teams," Marion Local coach Tim Goodwin said. "We were basically trying to win the game until very late in the fourth quarter. Then we just decided we'd try it again next week because we knew there'd be a good chance we'd play them again."

In fact, Goodwin said the Harbin computer points math could have forced a Flyers-Rockets rematch even if Marion Local had won. Maybe it was destiny.

"We certainly wish we could play someone else," Goodwin said. "They probably do, too, because our league tends to do well in the playoffs."

You might say that. The MAC has a long history of state champions, including six in the past three seasons. And while the teams didn't really have to exchange more films, they did.

"Now we have six games on each other," Goodwin said. "Two from the regular season, three more plus the game we just played. We know a lot about each other."

Butler, T-M echoes

Trotwood-Madison's last-minute, 27-25 victory over Vandalia Butler gave the Rams the GWOC North title. But T-M's Harbin computer ratings ripples extended around the state.

Fairmont coach Brian Blevins figures his team would have been the sixth seed in Region 4 if Butler had won. That would have meant a first-round game against Elder at "The Pit" in Cincinnati instead of at Northmont.

"The kids might have been saying, 'Can we compete with them?'" Blevins said. "We know right now we can compete with Northmont.

"It would have been real exciting for the kids, but maybe this is our best path. Not taking anything away from Northmont, but this is a good way to get our feet wet in the playoffs."

In Greenville, the Rams' win likely bounced the Green Wave from the D-II, Region 6 playoffs. Greenville finished ninth with 20.9940 computer points. That would have been higher with an Aviators win. The Rams' newest fans must be Powell Olentangy Liberty (21.1500), which slid into the eighth spot.

Quick hitters

• Getting four teams in the Region 4 playoffs likely will be a topic when GWOC teams meet Tuesday to vote on all-conference honors.

"I think it's really exciting for our conference," Wayne coach Jay Minton said. "It's neat because our region is predominantly GCL (South) dominated."

Minton, whose team was defeated 31-14 by Centerville in Week 9, said the Elks may have what it takes at Elder: "Don't be surprised if they don't go down there and give them a game."

• Northmont quarterback Chase Belton rolled an ankle in the Week 10 win against Beavercreek. He didn't play the second half. "He's fine," Northmont coach Lance Schneider said. "He could have played."

• Urbana (9-1) finished ninth in D-III, Region 10, even though it tied Defiance (8-2) with 19.000 points. The difference was third-level points and Defiance had 420 to Urbana's 388.

• Valley View used third-level points to earn the fifth seed in D-III, Region 12 while Canal Winchester ended sixth.

Urbana played a horrible weak schedule for a Div 3 school. They are probably the 3rd best team in Champaign County. They should no way be in the playoffs. If they would have been in the Kenton Trace they would have lost at least 1, maybe 2 more games. Get a grp!

No way should there be more teams in the playoffs. The playoffs are a privilege not a right. Win your games and you earn your way in. 8 teams is enough, there are a few 8 vs 1 upsets and many 1 over 8 blowouts. What makes you think you can win playoff games if you can’t even get into the top 8?

At,

You might be underdogs, but you still lead the way in not being able to type a coherent sentence. You’re also the champs at lack of punctuation and lead the way in setting trends for mullets.
