XENIA — There will be no third time around, Ed Mignery insists, when it comes to being a head high school football coach.

"Nope, this is it for me," he said. "I might help out some place because I love coaching and working with kids. But it's time to move over as a head coach."

Mignery, 59, announced his resignation at Xenia High School on Tuesday, Dec. 2. His five-year record with the Buccaneers was 22-28, including 2-8 this past season.

Overall, he has coached football for 38 years, 26 as a head coach with an overall record of 141-121-1.

Prior to Xenia, Mignery had been the head coach at Hamilton for 14 years with playoff appearances in 2001, '97 and '94.

He retired from full-time teaching in 2001 so he could watch his son, Andy (the youngest of three children), play quarterback and tight end at the University of Michigan.

When former coach Paul Jenne left Xenia following the 2003 season, Mignery was hired. He had been living in Hamilton and was teaching at Trotwood-Madison.

Mignery's Xenia teams were 5-5, 6-4, 4-6, 5-5 and 2-8 with a tie for the South Division championship in the Greater Western Ohio Conference in 2006 and runner-up in '07.

Xenia Assistant Athletic Director John Marrinan said the job will be posted in-house for 10 days as required by state law, then opened up.

Mignery works in the school's Career Based Intervention program.

A 1967 graduate of Hamilton Badin, Mignery played college football at Morehead (Ky.) State.

His first head coaching job was at Springfield Shawnee, a position he had for five years. He was then head coach at Trotwood-Madison for two years before going to Hamilton.

Along with coaching, Mignery was a wrestling official for 21 years.

"My biggest disappointment in the time I've coached here is not getting us into the playoffs," he said. "I thought we were close a couple years, but didn't quite get it done against a pretty tough schedule."
