Meadowdale collects holiday hoops tournament trophy
Tuesday, December 30, 2008
Meadowdale's victory in the Ohio Youth Sports Association holiday tournament was the first boys basketball championship the Lions have collected since 1992 when they won the City League.
Ryne Drakes, a 6-foot-1 senior guard, was the MVP of tournament Meadowdale hosted. He had 31 points in an 80-66 title game defeat of Columbus Africentric and 13 points and 8 rebounds in a first-round win over Canal Winchester Harvest Prep.
Teammates Marquece Simmons, a 5-9 junior, and Dominic Johnson, a 6-3 senior, joined Drakes on the all-tournament team.
Now 5-3 with a four-game winning streak, coach Felix Turner's team gets Yellow Springs and Stivers the next two outings before running into Dunbar, Cincinnati Taft, Beavercreek and Marshall.
"If we could go 4-2 in those next six games, I'd be happy," said Turner. "Winning the tournament was good because it brought us together more as a team. We were having some problems early in the season with cohesiveness. But I hope we're over that.
"We've changed our style to getting the ball up and down the floor more and we're playing better defense."
