Martinsburg (W.Va.) 59,
Dayton Christian 47
Key players: Martinsburg's Isaac Thornton led all players with 21 points, while grabbing 8 defensive boards. George Chase came off the bench to chip in 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Aaron Deister went 4-for-10 from long range, and had 18 for DC.
Turning point: Martinsburg senior Cameron Cato capped a big third quarter by driving hard to the hoop with about 70 seconds remaining in the period, stretching the Bulldog lead to 12 at 46-34. DC was unable to get closer than 6 the rest of the way.
Quote: "For us to be able to play the No. 2 team in West Virginia, a Division I school and we're a Division III school here, it's a great opportunity for us. We look at it as a chance to get better and try to get ready for the tournament and the rest of our league schedule. We couldn't be happier." – Dayton Christian coach Chip James.
Cleveland Heights 64,
San Diego 57
Key players: Reginald Keely led Cleveland Heights with 22 points, including a number of big second-half buckets and free throws. Six-foot-eleven inch Louisville-bound junior Jeremy Tyler had a ridiculous stat line — game highs in points (27), boards (15), assists (4), blocks (4) and minutes (32).
Turning point: Freshman point guard Tyree Gaiter, generously listed at 5-5 and 125 pounds, buried a 3 from the left baseline with 5:30 left in the game that gave Cleveland Heights its first lead of the half at 48-45. He hit a free throw moments later to stretch it to 4 – and the Tigers never trailed again.
Quote: "Coach says to shoot with confidence. My teammate came down, passed me the ball and I was open. I knocked it down." – Tyree Gaiter on his critical, fourth-quarter 3.
Chaminade Julienne 72, Massanutten Military (Va.) 50
Key players: Junior guard Ryan Bass was lights out, scoring a game-high 30 points (9-for-21 from the floor and a perfect 11-for-11 from the stripe). CJ's Joe Staley was unstoppable inside, scoring 25, while adding 9 boards.
Quote: "We play in the toughest league in America, in my thoughts. I think that prepared us. It's very important (to perform well in a big local tournament) because we not only put ourselves on the map, we put the whole GCL on the map." – Chaminade Julienne guard Ryan Bass.
Springboro 67,
Morrow (Ga.) 63 OT
Key players: Bryce Drew and Cody Bohinc led the Panthers with 17 each. Justin Garrett was dominant, scoring 16 points to go with a game-high 15 rebounds.
Turning point: Garrett saved the day with a last-second put-back after a Springboro miss that sent the game to overtime at 51-51.
Quote: "One of the things we talk to our guys about is that a lot of times, games are won or lost with offensive rebounds. We told our guys, 'We're going to get the shot, go get the rebound, put us in overtime.' JG did just that for us tonight." — Springboro coach Troy Holtrey
