MIDDLETOWN — Middletown High School Athletic Director Gary Lebo expressed great pride in the emphasis he and the MHS coaching staff has when it comes to character development of the school's student-athletes.
That's why when incidents involving a Middie student, such as the ones that have recently been encountered by senior football player Dwayne "Deejay" Hunter, Lebo tends to look on the positive side of things.
Hunter, 18, will appear at 8:15 a.m. today, Jan. 21, in Middletown Municipal Court for a pretrial hearing on felonious assault charges for his alleged involvement in a BB gun shooting of a teen last week.
After his arrest last week, charges of criminal damaging, assault and aggravated trespassing from July also were discovered. The details of that offense were not released because Hunter was a juvenile at the time.
The incident in July, which occurred just a few weeks before the football season began, has left some people wondering why, when athletes can be kicked off teams for other offenses such as drinking alcohol, Hunter was allowed to play football for the Middies this past fall.
"It's important to keep students involved in athletics," Lebo said. "I feel as an athletic department we do emphasize character development, because our biggest asset is our students."
Lebo said the school was aware of an incident last July involving Hunter, but because he was a juvenile, the court records were sealed. Also, the outcome of the incident was not resolved until November, after the football season was completed, Lebo said.
"The thing we have to remember is these are 15-, 16-, 17-year-old kids. It's important for them to be involved in activities," Lebo said. "If we have a borderline kid, then we want to keep him involved because he's going to be around great coaches. If we can help them at that age and develop character, they'll be better people."
Hunter, one of the top defensive backs in the country, committed to the University of Tennessee in July. The Volunteers are no longer recruiting Hunter, who was planning on visiting several Big Ten schools.
The first day of the early signing period is Feb. 4.

Now here is a rumor that is bothering me… The word on the street says this kid had a gun in his vehicle at school. IF (and I say IF) this is true, then I don’t believe it was a stupid choice of a teenager. This is a very serious situation and this is why we have laws.

Speak The Truth,
Your post has been the most sensible one to date. I agree with everything that you say. I, too, know of several white students who have done some pretty serious things and nothing has happened to them. I am a parent of a white student currently at MHS. My child has a lot of African American friends - DeeJay being one of them. DeeJay is not a thug. He is a kid who made a very bad decision and will now pay the consequences for his actions.

And for many years things have been swept under the rug for students and people in this city. Not just black athletes make wrong decisions. I can think of a few white students who did some pretty stupid stuff, but no one ever knows about that. But its not about black and white. Just know all the details before making a decision and opinion about someone. Rather than criticizing why don’t you try to help. Volunteers and mentors are always needed since you have all of the right answers.

and attend a college of his choosing will only help. I’m not saying that his behavior is appropriate, but felony charges and now everyone is dogging him. When he was making good plays and scoring for this city, he was KING. And for someone to talk about Allen Roberts, you need to get the facts straight. It was the city blackout and he was being followed by an unmarked car, unmarked policeman, and had a gun pulled on him all in front of his own residence. (a white neighborhood) What would you do

Same old Middletown and of course The Middletown Journal. Never around to report outstanding and honorable achievements made by our youth, but instead eager and ready to report all wrongdoings. I don’t feel that any of you should comment on anything that you don’t have accurate facts about and your pitiful outcry of demeaning terms is just a cry for attention. (“thug” and whatever else you say in your household) Solitary confinement won’t help this young man, but the ability to expand his mind

Deejay is like a lil bro to me. Damn it suck that he is going to through all this. All i got to say is stop pointiing the finger at everybody. Deejay is 18 and he is a grown man he is responsible for what he did. and who ever said that about his dad earlier need to shut the hell up. and about the teacher who are you to say anything about them you wasn’t there at the high school. Deejay made some mistakes the good thing is that in life you always get a second chance. Big Bra #54

There are two sides to the story. I would like to know how his behavior was at school. There are many instances when kids are good at school, work hard, and are respectful but have little guidance, instability, and a poor homelife that is the basis for these problems OUTSIDE of school. Sometimes the rod is spared at school so the students will stay in school because that is the best place for them. NOT all kids are the same, not all kids have caring parents at home.

Once and for all MHS needs to set the rules for ALL and stick to them, no matter what talent. If a coach or AD sidesteps them then discipline them also. I hope the prosecutor goes after this thug and sticks to his guns. No more plea downs, he had his one extra shot. Middletown and MHS have a duty to protect ALL and it is time they start doing it. Rules are rules and laws are laws. ENFORCE THEM!

As usual, the Middletown AD has the back of their star black players and the Football program. He talks out of both sides of his mouth emphasizing morals and qualities when the words come out but NEVER backs it up. He has allowed coaches to do the same for years. Middletown School Board members WAKE UP - do not renew his contract again. If I was the parent of the child shot, I would look at a court case against the school district for the cover up. Won’t ever send another child there again.

This only shows how much the school care about the kids. If he was in trouble before football even began he should of been benched or even kicked off the team. This is sending a message to the other students its okay to do whatever,we have your back.Open your eyes AD this is unexcectable.

How stupid to say you blame the athletic department for this second incident..How many incidents do you think would have occurred had he not been involved in playing sports. I have seen how being involved in athletics effects kids. and keeping him from participating would have just fueled the rage that is obviously in him. So where does that leave administrators? You may want to, but you just can’t throw these kids under the bus and say they don’t deserve anything. That results in nothing.

EVERYONE WOULD LIKE TO BLAME THE TEACHER AND COACHES FOR EVERYTHING , THE DISCIPLINE STARTS AT HOME. IT IS NOT LEFT UP TO ANYONE ELES BUT THE PARENTS TO DISCIPLINE. TEACHERS AND COACHES ARE THERE FOR TEACHING AND GUIDANCE NOT TO RAISE THE CHILD. DISCIPLINE, HONSTY, LOVE AND ADMIRATION START WHEN YOU ARE BORN. DEEJAY HAD A GOOD THING GOING AND MESSED IT UP,A FEW YEARS DOWN THE ROAD HE WILL HOPEFULLY REALISES WHAT HE COULD’VE HAD AND HE WILL POSSIBILITY BE LOOKING OUT FROM BEHIND BARS.

I feel he needs to be scouted by the Bengals. Its seems this is the kind they like! As far as discipline goes, doesn’t that start at home? Its not left up to the Schools and Coaches to raise him, only to help guide him in the right direction. As always Teachers gets the blunt end of the deal.

This kid’s a knucklehead and is on the fast-track to a life in prison. But the school’s inconsistency is the problem here. If the kid wasn’t a playmaker being courted by college recruiters making school’s program look good, he would have been quickly booted from the team. Coach and AD are to blame for not teaching the RIGHT lesson. Kid probably thought he was OJ Junior and the law could not touch him. Middletown was never known for having a lot of smart people in leadership positions.

If this had been the DeeJay’s first & only offense, that would be one thing, but to find out now that this kid was in trouble before the season,& they knew about it, is a disgrace to this schools atheltic department, and all involved! Nobody, including DeeJay, will learn from this is it isn’t handled right. Mr. Lebo, step up and do the right thing to set an example for our future players! ‘84 MHS grad

His future may be on thin ice but he made that CHOICE. Don’t put yourself in those situations when your career is in your own hands. Always think about what you are doing. Middletown has one of the best coaches in Ohio (Jason Krause) and I believe Middletown does have a chance at Championship. It takes a team not just one kid to win a game. The only person to blame here is DeeJay himself…MAKE SMART CHOICES…Listen to Coach. Stay clear of trouble.

I think we are all missing the boat, and that is part of the problem. we are looking at the crime and not what is behind the crime. A young man with his whole future ahead of him commits these types of crimes?? what is really going on?? His behavior past and present is totally unacceptable…but is there other issues there that we are not seeing or not being made aware of?? Lets help with our comments and not hurt with our comments. A young future is on very thin ice.

that if it had been a white kid who was on this team, would’ve been running all practice and never looked for in a game, since you want to bring race in to it. That’s all Middletown athletics is anymore, is let’s just let all our black athletes do what they want so we can try to win some games, and they still can’t do it. The attitude is what is wrong with that whole town.

they let go at this school. That’s why Middletown athletics will never have championship winning teams again because its obvious that this attitude of you can do whatever you want and still play goes all the way to the top of the athletic dept. They did the same thing with Allen Roberts and kept it hush hush. He was cited for running from the cops at speeds over 90-100 mph in Middletown but as long as he can play basketball, I’m sure he’ll never do it again. What a joke and I can guarantee

starter on the team, with his other classmates who are upstanding citizens and do the right things. Not being allowed to play would have proven that he won’t get everything he wants in life if he commits these types of actions. I blame everyone in the Middletown athletic department for this second incident because of how they just let these young kids do whatever they want. It’s not just committing crimes either, they overlook grade problems, not going to school, its hard to say what else

DeeJay may get what’s coming to him, but will he learn from it? With the lack discipline, support and guidance he got after the first incident, my guess is no. Why else would have gotten in trouble again? “please shutup!!” sounds like part of the problem. We’all may not be as athletic as some, but being a good athlete doesn’t make you a good person. Discipline builds good character. If the Athletic Director is REALLY wanting to develop good character, he should enforce better discipline.

This is what the problem is with Middletown athletics and the reasons why the athletes that are in the Middletown school system never succeed. It should be a privilege to play on a football team and when someone commits these types of crimes, which some are felonies! They treat the special players at Middletown like they can do no wrong, so they never learn from their mistakes. He should have still be allowed to be on the team, but what lesson did he learn from being able to go out and be

I agree with the coach to the point that this kid should not have been kicked off the team but he should have had been suspended for one or more games. He has most likely ruined his chances at a D-1 scholership now I hope the adults in his life and Coach Lebo can get through to him. Once is a mistake twice is a trend.

Mr. Lebo musthave went to Arthur Murray the way he tap dances around this. We know he needed the kid to play. What kind of character building is this, being taught that if your a good athelete, you can get away with this type of behavior, hence the new charges. If Lebo really cared about building character, he would have taught Hunter that anti-social behavior is unacceptable by not letting him play

He beats up his pretty little girlfriend, destroys her parent’s property in the process, shows NO remorse, and he’s deemed a “Borderline Kid”? HE’S A THUG! To prove he’s a thug, he goes out and shoots random innocent people on the street. This is what happens when we “Spare the Rod”….. we “Spoil the Child”. This is at the root of what is wrong in this country today. Kids have respect for NOTHING, because they know there’s no REAL punishment. What a shame.
