Having a ball and playing, too

This is the first of a weekly roundup of recreational sports items throughout the summer.

Miami Valley Adult Baseball League

The over-18 league is a mix of everything: experience, talent and ages. Some are ex-minor-league ballplayers. Others didn't even play high school ball.

The team with the best record, the Astros, has an average player age of 30.

"We've got guys in their 30s who just can't get baseball out of their system," Astros player/manager Rob Johnson said.

"We have rivalries, heated moments; it's exciting. We're gonna keep going as long as we can compete with the young guys."

Johnson, 33, of Beavercreek, has played in the MVABL since the league's inception in 1994.

"I've played 27 straight seasons of baseball," he said. "It's all about the love of the game. It gives you something to look forward to during the week at work."

Most of the players use the league for recreation. The season began in early April and continues through August, with 10 teams playing from one to three games per week throughout the area.

The league employs college-esque rules, including metal bats and nine-inning games.

Team Dayton hockey

For the first time, the Miami Valley has a girls hockey team. Following the 2005 startup of the adult Dayton Fangs women's hockey team, the under-19 Team Dayton started practices June 22.

"Most girls on the team will not only be brand new to hockey, but also brand new to skating," head coach Marianne Graham said.

The turnout for the first practice was low. But Graham said the Fangs began the same way, and ended up with a full team after just a few months.

Team Dayton will practice weekly at Hobart Arena in Troy and continue to look for players until its first game in November.

Dayton Wings lacrosse

The high school boys club team ended its season with a trip to the state semifinals and a record of 12-5 in just its fifth year of existence. The Wings are part of the Ohio High School Athletic Association's club division of lacrosse.

It's been said lacrosse is the country's fastest growing sport, and Dayton hasn't been immune to the sweeping craze.

"High schools are starting club teams, and schools that already have club teams are pushing for varsity," said Wings coach Harry Calcutt.

Brothers Alex and Zach Kauth, who played midfield for the Wings, transferred to Chaminade-Julienne from Virginia. Alex said although Dayton lacrosse is new, "elite Ohio lacrosse is catching up with East Coast elite. It's intense."
