Kettering's Fountain comes up short in long jump

U.S. heptathlon champ finishes fourth at U.S. Olympic trials.

EUGENE, Ore. — It was one of those days that just didn't work out for Kettering's Hyleas Fountain.

After blowing away the heptathlon field last weekend, the Columbus, Ga., native wanted to qualify for the Beijing Olympics in the open long jump as well.

The 2004 NCAA champ, who is now trained by Central State University assistant track coach Lynn Smith, fouled a couple times Thursday night, July 3, and barely missed qualifying. She needed to finish in the top three, but ended up fourth with a leap of 21-113/4.

Funmi Jimoh took third with a 22 feet, 3/4 inch effort. To make matters a little ironic, Fountain jumped 22-7 during the heptathalon, which would have been good for second place Thursday.

Grace Upshaw hit that mark while Brittney Reese won the event with a leap of 22-93/4.
