Weekend sports anchor Brosko to leave WHIO-TV

By Marc Katz

Staff Writer

Thursday, October 23, 2008

DAYTON — Margaret Brosko likes to tell the stories, not be one.

"It's not about me," Brosko said Thursday, Oct. 23, after confirming that this will be her last weekend as a sports anchor after three years at WHIO-TV (Channel 7). "The best part of this job is telling the stories.

"It has been great in Dayton, a market where fans value the stories of high school, college and pro athletes. I've been in areas where they only cared about high schools, or college or the pros, but not all three.

"It's not about the sportscaster. It's about the stories."

Nonetheless, Brosko is leaving following broadcasts tonight, Saturday and Sunday, although she would not name a destination, or even if she has one.

"My contract is up and I'll be fine," Brosko said. "It was great to be here. The fans were great, as well as the players and coaches at all levels."

WHIO wanted her to stay.

"We'd love for her to stay," said WHIO news director Dave Bennallack, "but she decided she wanted to look for something else."

A Youngstown native, Brosko worked at WHIO three years as an intern beginning in 1994 when she was a sophomore at the University of Dayton.

Following graduation, she worked at stations in Calumet, Mich.; Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Reno, Nev., before returning to Dayton.

"We hate to see her go," WHIO sports director Mike Hartsock said. "We were very lucky to have her for three years."

Until he can find a replacement, Hartsock said he would use Don Brown for the weekend newscasts.

She had a cute face and a nice butt.Sports are merely entertainment, anyway,so why can’t the reporter be?I think that ch.7 news has gone downhill since the last of the great oldtimers retired-Jim Baldridge. Now,they have a couple of decent reporters and a few who don’t seem to care about small typos that can change the entire context of a story, etc. They have that chubby guy Mark Bruce who looks like a fat kid that got caught stealing doughnuts from a bakery and his reporting is equally bad.

Wow, I am so late to the party. This article came out 10-23-08 and I just googled Margaret Brosko on 3-8-09 and found it. My wife mentioned that she had not seen MB on TV 7 for a while. We really liked her. I think she replaced young Mario Barson (spelling?). We like Don Brown because he does not YELL the sports. We tolerate Hartsock. We also miss Reporter Rebecca Combs. RC was with TV 22 and then TV 7.

My question is>>> What happened to Cathy Stelzer The News Reporter She was Very professional. I think the problem is your Newer and Younger Reporters. Today they will never replace Cathy. I do wish her Success in her change. She was great, and looked forward to Saturday morning with Cathy Stelzer.. Great loss channel 7..

Forget Lyle Steig. He was found by police at Rice Field in Miamisburg months back doing sexual favors with himself. That is discusting! You can probably find the new article here at DDN. You do not want to see his mug shot!

Anyway Mike Hartsock causes me to turn down the volume level on my TV. Does he have to scream at us while his head sways and body bounces? He is not that exciting, maybe to himself.

Margaret was a breath of fresh air.

I have this awful feeling that Newsinner 7 would not ever release Margaret from having to broadcast from Beef O’Brady’s. If I had that contingent in my contract, I think perhaps I would flee to South Dakota or anywhere.

Shudder.

Luke Notestine from Channel 22 and Fox is a class act. Seems like we haven’t seen much of him lately though. He is both professional and entertaining. It’s nice seeing a young person doing a job that you can tell he really enjoys, plus being a hometown guy can only help bring more viewership.

By Cindy W

My favorite is Luke Notestine on Ch.22!! Tho it doesn’t seem like we are seeing much of him lately? My vote would be for him to replace Margaret. He’s young and he could be groomed to take Hartsock’s place. From reading many of the postings, sounds like Dayton is ready for some new faces! I hope Ch. 7 doesn’t miss out and let this guy leave town! Ch. 22 is already underutilizing him.

Jack Pohl is an egomaniac too! I saw him in an ice cream shop a couple of years ago on an informal date with a young woman. No one left that shop without knowing who he was and what he did. I’m sure his head wouldn’t have fit through the door if someone asked for an autograph in front them. He and Hartsock both probably check themselves out everytime they walk past a mirror! Real “dandy’s.”

I have mixed feelings about her leaving. On the air I thought she tried too hard to use all the right buzz words and phrases. She was also very loud. However, I agree with everyone about Hartsock—the absolute biggest ego ever. The best sports news team: Buch and Pohl. Who’s the worst: Time Warner!!!!!

Brosko wasn’t my favorite but she is much better than “dorksock”. Maybe if we say it enough he’ll disappear too! If we get to pick the new anchor, how about the old UD boy, Dan Patrick! We could put Dibble in the booth with him and see what fun we could have, like his radio show used to be. If not, lets team up Don Brown and Jack Pohl, they would be a good sports team. Maybe Guy Fogle could make a cameo every now and again just to stir it up.

There goes the only real sportscaster that WHIO-TV has. She doesn’t scream at you, she doesn’t waive her hands at you and she knows there are sports going on outside the city-limits of Dayton and the State of Ohio. She is the consumate professional and will be sorely missed. Best wishes, Margaret. You’ll be a tremendous asset to whatever station you finally settle on.

Dash-Man, you are killing me with the Lyle Stieg lines…LMAO…Actually the two best sports broadcasters ever in Dayton were Mick Hubert (current voice of the Florida Gators)and Larry Hansgen.Television news sports “readers” are just that, readers. Sports knowledge is not required. Fancy Hair and the ability to read are..While Brosko’s enthusiasm was genuine,I always thought it was her only positive. I found her on air presence, her voice and her style grating and hard to watch.

Margaret Brosko is delightful. It was great to watch her grow over the past few years both her on screen presence and her overall delivery of the sports. It’s too bad that she is leaving and I would think that the station should try to do what they can to keep her.

Of course, as tough as this crowd is with the comments - she might be glad to get out of town.

I don’t think Hartsock is a bad guy. He was at the WPAFB Tattoo last summer hanging out and signing autographs for anybody who wanted one. However, Don Brown RULES! The best sports guy Dayton’s ever had and I’ve been here for 40 plus years. And btw before you write some nasty comment about him don’t forget that he hosted the MDA telethon all those years..sometimes pretty much by himself!

Speech impediments? Are Jim R and I the only ones who notice Letitia Perry’s lisp? I didn’t always notice it - but just about the time that her teeth started to look expensively new. I suspect the newly-done teeth have something to do with it.

Any good broadcasters (news, weather and sports)that show up in Dayton or are created in Dayton will not remain here in Dayton very long. The good ones will always go somewhere bigger where they will get paid much better. Dayton is the location for the bad ones to wear out their welcome. The good ones move out fast. I believe Dayton stations are the ones who give more opportunities to the handicapped broadcasters (slight speech disorders and etc.) which would not be acceptible in large markets.

Such a loss for TV sports viewers. Margaret added spark and sparkle to the sportscast and was REALLY INTO SPORTS. She wsa GREAT for Channel 7. I looked forward to when she was anchor, and her segments. She didn’t just read the prompter… She delivered the sports news with accuracy, humor and spunk. Hopefully after contract restrictions are up, she could appear on another local station! WOW… what a loss for local viewers!!

Darn! There goes my only reason for watching a local sports broadcast. I’m sure going to miss you. Good luck with whatever/where ever you go!
