Going a few rounds with the NFL Draft

Staff Writer

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

With the NFL Draft approaching — what!?!, it's still almost two weeks away?!? — I'm putting myself on the NFL clock.

Round 1: Jerry Jones must be drinking Al Davis' Kool-Aid. Why else would the Dallas Cowboys owner take a chance on Pacman Jones? Jones is high-risk and most definitely high-reward, but that last part typically refers to law enforcement.

And, I have to ask, why would a grown man go around calling himself a 1980s video game? I gave it a shot last week, referring to myself only as Space Invaders Billing.

It didn't fly.

Chris Henry's name has popped up concerning Big D, too. The Cowboys could go from America's Team to America's Most Wanted Team in a hurry.

Round 2: I just read where Herschel Walker has a book out discussing a disorder that left him with about a dozen personalities. It all makes sense now. That's why the Vikings gave up five players and eight draft picks to get him, right?

Seriously, here's wishing Walker all the best as he continues his recovery.

Round 3: I heard an interesting story in which a Florida newspaper suggested the Miami Dolphins should pass on the draft's first pick and let another team pick up the monstrous signing bonus.

I would have applauded the San Francisco 49ers doing that in 2005, when they took QB Alex Smith at No. 1. Maybe the 49ers could have paid a little less than $49.5 million for 31 interceptions in 32 games.
