Only 'natural' bodies wanted for tri-state bodybuilding event

Stringent testing is planned for Saturday's competition at Dayton Convention Center.

Those attending the bodybuilding show at the Dayton Convention Center on Saturday, May 17, can be fairly certain they are watching something real.

The inaugural INBF Tri-State Bodybuilding and Figure Competition compels contestants to submit not only to urinalysis, but also a polygraph. INBF stands for International NATURAL Bodybuilding and Fitness, after all.

"The issue is, they have to be tested before they can jump on stage. We do stringent tests. Most organizations don't," said organizer Delbert Hickman, a 42-year-old Englewood resident who in 2002 qualified as a world natural bodybuilding professional.

It had been Hickman's dream to bring this kind of event here. "It's actually been a logistical nightmare, but things are pulling together nicely," he said. "We started planning 10 months ago, so a lot of the critical parts have been taken care of."

Hickman's five-year plan is to turn this into a pro-am. With limited sponsorship, there is no prize money. Winners in three divisions receive jackets — "nice jackets," Hickman stressed — and trophies.

"Our goal for next year is to grow it into an event where some who compete in our show would qualify as pros," said Hickman, a 1992 Wright State University graduate and veteran of Desert Storm, a tour of duty in which he met his wife, LaDawn, a figure competitor.

As of late Thursday, more than 30 bodybuilders and figure competitors from across the country had signed up, and Hickman said another 10 to 15 were "on the fence." A room with space for 300 spectators has been reserved.
