Bengals activate Chris Perry in one of 3 roster moves

CINCINNATI — In an attempt to ignite the struggling offense, the Bengals pulled the trigger on three roster moves Friday.
They activated tailback Chris Perry to the 53-man roster from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list; placed wide receiver Tab Perry on Injured Reserve, ending his season; and signed rookie wide receiver Glenn Holt to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

Chris Perry (6-0, 224), the club's first-round draft pick in 2004 out of Michigan, is a valuable third-down weapon who gives the offense a speedy complement to starter Rudi Johnson. Perry had been on the PUP list since training camp because of ankle and knee injuries, but he returned to practice this week on a roster exemption.
"It will be good to have Chris back, but it won't change how we run the offense," head coach Marvin Lewis said after practice on Friday. "He's obviously a guy that wants to play and he's worked hard.
"He's overcome the (left knee and left ankle) surgeries he had and he seems to be in a good position. Probably being on PUP was the best thing. That way, we didn't rush him back and he got a full opportunity to heal."
Now Tab Perry gets a chance to heal a right hip injury suffered against Cleveland on Sept. 17. The second-year wideout had five catches for 81 yards and four kickoff returns for a 17.3-yard average. Antonio Chatman and Kenny Watson take over as the club's kickoff returners.
"The best thing for him is to rest (his hip)," Lewis said. "It should be (a typical rehab), but because of the amount of pressure on the joint it's a little more stressful. The protocol is much slower than other injuries. The best thing for him and his future is for us not to push this and for him not to push it, most importantly, and for him to allow it to heal correctly."
Holt (6-1, 193) signed with the Bengals on May 15 as a college free agent from Kentucky. He played in three preseason games, with one catch for 11 yards and a 16-yard kickoff return. He was waived Sept. 2 and was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 4.
Holt gives the receiving corps some depth and versatility because there's no guarantee that Chris Henry will be reinstated when he's eligible to come off a two-game suspension on Monday.
Left offensive tackle Levi Jones underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Wednesday. Rookie second-round draft pick Andrew Whitworth replaces Jones in the starting lineup against the visiting Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
Lewis said the surgery went well, but refused to put a timetable on Jones' return.
"I hate to do that," Lewis said, "because then you're putting limits on it — limits and pressure."
