CINCINNATI — Bengals quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese is in Charlotte, N.C., interviewing for the Carolina Panthers' offensive coordinator post, the Dayton Daily News has learned.
The position opened on Monday when the Panthers fired Dan Henning. Carolina has already interviewed two in-house candidates — Jim Skipper, assistant head coach/running backs, and quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy.
Extras
Zampese is under contract with Cincinnati through 2007. But the Bengals gave Carolina permission to interview him. He's credited with the development of Bengals' two-time Pro Bowl QB Carson Palmer, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2003 NFL draft.
Zampese becomes the second highly-sought-after Bengals' assistant. Wide receivers coach Hue Jackson was named the Atlanta Falcons' offensive coordinator on Jan. 8. Cincinnati filled Jackson's position on Tuesday with the hiring of Mike Sheppard.
Zampese, the son of longtime NFL offensive coordinator Ernie Zampese, was an assistant coach at Miami University (1996-97) before entering the NFL. He was an assistant with Philadelphia (1998), Green Bay (1999) and St. Louis (2000-02) before joining the Bengals.
