Talks begin about 2008 training camp

CINCINNATI — Georgetown College President William H. Crouch Jr. met with Bengals President Mike Brown on Wednesday, and the two discussed the future of their training-camp agreement.

The club and college agreed last June on a one-year contract extension to hold training camp at Georgetown's East Campus Athletic Complex for an 11th straight year.

Extras

Although no decision was reached regarding 2008 on Wednesday, "I left Cincinnati with the impression that we're going to continue to be long-term partners with the Bengals," Crouch told the Dayton Daily News.

The NAIA school in central Kentucky has served as the Bengals summer training-camp home since 1997.

More NFL teams are staying home for the summer. In 1995, six of 30 teams trained at their home facilities (20 percent). A decade later, 15 of 32 squads are training at their headquarters (47 percent).

Golfing for charity

The Marvin Lewis Golf Classic, presented by Cincinnati Bell, is Sunday at Shaker Run Golf Club in Lebanon.

Among the celebrities who will tee off at the 10:30 a.m. shotgun start are Pro Football Hall of Famers Anthony Munoz, Lem Barney and Steve Largent; two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin; former Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams; and Jacksonville head coach Jack Del Rio.

The event — which includes a "Welcome to our Jungle" post-golf party with live and silent auctions — is one of the largest fundraisers for the Marvin Lewis Community Fund, which benefits seven nonprofit organizations along with its own programs.

Chris Henry update

Wide receiver Chris Henry is participating in the club's on-field coaching sessions because his eight-game suspension doesn't start until Sept. 3.

"He's suspended and he has an opportunity to get himself back reinstated, and then maybe he'll have a good NFL career," Lewis said. "But we can't count on the guy.

"If you don't know when you can count on him, you can't count on him. It's really not a concern of mine at all. I think we have better players, guys that we can count on."

Spring 'break'

Wide receivers Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh will participate in the 2007 DirectTV NFL Quarterback Challenge in the Cayman Islands on Saturday.

They'll be reunited with Lions quarterback and former Bengals teammate Jon Kitna, and will also catch passes from Jason Campbell (Redskins), Tarvaris Jackson (Vikings), Byron Leftwich (Jaguars) and Alex Smith (49ers).

Braylon Edwards (Browns) and Brandon Lloyd (Redskins) will join Johnson and Houshmandzadeh in a "No Huddle" timed event.

ESPN will air the competition from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 3.

'Hollywood' Irons

Tailback Kenny Irons is among 30-plus rookies who are in Los Angeles today for a four-day outing for the Reebok NFL Players Rookie Premiere.

The players will wear their official team jerseys for the first time in a series of photo shoots for trading card companies Donruss Playoff, Topps and Upper Deck.
