GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Cincinnati Bengals players were surprised, many even shocked. All were disappointed by the news that middle linebacker Odell Thurman's petition for reinstatement was denied.

The Bengals were notified by the league office Thursday morning that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had ruled against Thurman, who was suspended for the 2006 season for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy. Thurman can apply for reinstatement after the 2007 season.

Extras

"That shocked me, man. It's like the commissioner is being mean," wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh said. "I can't see why (Thurman) wouldn't get reinstated if he did everything he was supposed to do."

Added defensive end Justin Smith: "That's a hard-line message (from Goodell) right there. He's definitely trying to get something across and he's going pretty hard-core to do it. It's going to put the rest of the players on their toes."

Offensive tackle Levi Jones and defensive end Bryan Robinson were visibly shaken as they spoke about Thurman, who emerged as a star his rookie season in 2005, generating a team-high 148 tackles plus five interceptions and four forced fumbles.

"It's extremely unfortunate," Jones said. "It's going to hurt our team a lot. I don't know how much the coaches were planning on him contributing, but with all his attributes on the field, he's someone we definitely could've used."

"It's upsetting because it's Odell," Robinson added. "He's a son, a brother, a friend and we love him. Odell is a freak of nature, a talent you'd love to have on your team. At the same time, we've grown as a team and we have a championship we're trying to win. We have guys here we trust."

... Guys such as Ahmad Brooks, who replaces Thurman.

"Odell's definitely a big playmaker," Smith added. "But we've got to have other guys step up. Ahmad's up to that challenge. Everybody's replaceable out here and that's the way a team's got to be. We've just got to move forward. It's simple as that."

I just want to know the reason behind this second year? So let’s look at what we know so far. fact #1 O’dell missed a RANDOM drug test and gets 4 games #2 gets a DUI and gets a year. #3 Roger Goodell says he has to complete treament and stay out of tuouble.#4 No one talks about Odell for almost a year till Draft Day is when we here not only from players but from coach Lewis and Owner Mike Brown on how great he is doing and meeting all the requiements set by Mr. Goodell. Michael Vick has nothing to do with Odell Thurman, Roger Goodell is nothing but a bully who has gone way too far with punishing NFL players. Instead of trying to prove a point, Goodell should try focusing on helping a few of these troublemakers become better citizens. Odell deserves every right to play this season for the Bengals.

It’s not a black or white thing, it’s a stupid athlete who thinks he’s above the law thing. You get to play for a living, you get gobs of money and you can’t pass a drug test? Are you kidding me!!!!!!

To all athletes that fail drug tests and act stupid……..SCREW YOU and you should have to give back all the gobs of money. Is the NFL going to have to amend their contracts and put in a stupid clause? Michael Vick………….biggest piece of dung out there.

Thurman is a thug, no doubt, but if he served his punishment, then he should be allowed back in the NFL. If he does something else stupid (a sure bet), then suspend him again, ban him for life or whatever. It seems like the punishment being given out by Goodell isn’t consistent among players. That is the real issue. Because of the whole Michael Vick controversy, Goodell is trying to make a point with Thurman. Make the point with Vick and let Thurman get a second chance to prove himself.

Come on now….. you bengal fans always cry… first it was carson and his injury… oh how that terrible steeler player did that on purpose… and now this… roger just hates the bengals, that is all… and your guy, odell, didn’t comply… it specifically stated stay out of the papers and police blotter… i mean i know we all partied in college, which is to be expected, but when you are partying at 4 in the morning and getting arrested for beating someone’s head in, you should pay it

It is time to clean up the NFL. This might have been his firt dui but add the fight he was involve in and it all adds up to another thug in the NFL. The charges were dropped but people drop charges all the time. They are sometimes threatened or paid off, who knows? It’s time to suspend more players and send a message, “NO THUGS OR GANG MEMBER MENTALLITY IN THE NFL.”

I just hope Goddell gives an explination…Odell refused a drug test and got a DUI. Ok…he should be suspended. But then later that sae year…you hear uproars that Merrweathr didnt win defensive MVP when he failed a drugtest in the middle of the season! A player takes steroids and gets a dui and allgedly beats 2 guys up (who probobly deserved it…hence dropping the charges) gets 2 years…but a NFL Player who mugs another gets fined and another who gets federaly indited gets cant go to camp

To those who think if they had done what Odell had done they would be in jail right now, most people serve 3 days in rehab for a first offense DUI, Odell served 6. If Roger is sending a message why did a KC player get a 4 games suspension for his 2nd DUI in a year reduced to 2 games, and Odell gets 2 years for 1 DUI.

A 2 year suspension makes no sense. Joey Porter and his posse assaulted and robbed Levi Jones and he gets fined 3/17th of his pay for the year but no suspension. I fail to follow the logic or see the fairness. I agree with the crackdown on Personal Conduct but Goodell needs to realize he owes fans and teams an explanation for the basis of some of these rulings as these seemingly arbitrary rulings raise questions of fairness that effect competitive balance.

You do the crime, you do the time. However, when did that include a random doubling of the time? If he complied with all of the terms of his “rehabilitation” as he allegedly has, how is it possible for Odell to be reinstated. Way to ruin a career, Roger “Godless” Goodell, and by the way very even application of the law. This wouldn’t happen to a player on a team that he respects. Again the league shafts the Bengals. Lets all join as one in requesting that the Union step in and do its job!

Yes this will affect the Bengals I hope. It will let them know that it is time to act like professional and stop the thinking they are above the law.

They have had everything handed to them including a free college education that the rest of us had to pay for or are paying for, either for ourselves or our kids.

Now people are crying about the punishment. Maybe it is time for Cinci. to say “It Stops Now! No more trouble with the law or you will be using those college degrees.”

It’s all superfluous … if these players had to depend on me, they’d be working for a living like everyone else, and for a wage commensurate with their real value. They don’t get a dime of my money.

I agree that the punishment does not seem to fit the transgressions. Two seasons out of the game will likely end his career. He has one league violation, one misdemeanor, and one accusation that went nowhere. Unless the Commissioner is playing favorites, which seems unlikely, there must be something they’re not telling us.

I think the penalty is pretty severe, given the benchmarks the new commissioner is setting. I too agree that a hard stance needs to be taken with pro athletes regrading their behavior, but how does Goodell take another year from a player who was accused but never even indicted for these charges. There seems to be some inconsistency. He did his time for the substance abuse and the DUI. It just seems like the player’s union has a case with this one if it were to go before an arbitrator

It’s nice that Roger Goodell is being tough on these guys, but, Odell Thurman already served a 1 year suspension as his punishment for his actions. What if Tom Brady were to get a couple DUI’s and get caught with marijuana? Would he get a 2 YEAR suspension? 2 full seasons is way too long. Just the NFL’s way of holding another small market team down. The national TV ratings($) won’t be as high for the playoffs if the Bengals are playing.

I think NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has done the RIGHT thing here. All players should sit up and take notice, the NFL is tried of screwing around with this…Play ball or go hang with you drug friends and see where you end up…no one should do drugs and or drink and drive, this is not a good example for our children watching the news…what the heck are you thinking, What do you think this is doing to our childrens minds.???? Get your head out of you a*s and grow up.

I think Marvin should put his foot down along with other coaches and say ” you get in trouble, your are out” plain and simply…that is the bottom line here..

I am VERY disapointed in the conduct of all the Bengals that have gotten in trouble last season…you have made our team look like teenagers play pro ball…

Marvin, take the rains and put this team back together, please !!!!. I do not want to have to watch this crap this season..this is just out of control…

I thought it was a bit harsh as well, and I’m a Steeler fan. Especially when Chris Henry was getting arrested every other week, and he only received an 8 game suspension. I guess on the bright side, Lindsay Lohan is available, and she fits right into the Bengal culture. I figure if she can stop the run and stop Santonio Holmes on the quick slant, she might be worth a look…

The NFL and other sports have rules, they need to be followed. They are too many ATHLETES getting into trouble and think it is ok, and they can get out of it…well I am sure this may make them ALL think about their actions the next time they think about doing something STUPID..Either play by the rules or get the hell out….we want to watch football not deal with all this crap…

I understand the issues at hand, but what most of you are missing is the number of time I Thurman screwed up, and just because he is pro football player does not excuse him from his mistakes. If this would have been the average person, I am confident we would be in jail right now.

I look at it this way, “you do the crime, do the time”. Thurman should have thought about this, and he also should have thought about all the young football players, who’s look up to him.

I think that it’s interesting how Commisioner Goodell has swiftly acted on Thurman, Pacman Jones, Chris Henry, and others that have had little time in the NFL. Yet, he has yet to kick Michael Vicks butt, a long time star NFL player. This goes for any work place. You want to set an example to other people on how to act, punish the people with seniority to the same degree as the new hires. I’m getting so fed up with a** kissers getting a free ride from those in charge in this world! Earn it!

I THINK ITS GREAT!!! THESE PRO ATHLETES MAKE TO MUCH MONEY AS IT IS. PEOPLE IN A NORMAL EVERYDAY LIFE STRUGGLE JUST TO MAKE ENDS MEET SOMETIMES, AND THEN YOU HAVE THESE DUMB BUTTS MAKEING THOUSAND OF DOLLARS A YEAR AND THEY DONT APPRECIATE WHAT THEY HAVE.. THEY OBVIOUSLY HAVE A TALENT TO PLAY PROFESSION BALL THEN THEY ARE GIVEN THESE CHUNCKY SALARIES AND THE LOSE CONTROL. OUR CHILDREN LOOK UP TO THESE GUYS AND IDOLIZE THEM…. YUCK!!!! THEY SHOULD HAVE A NO TOLERANCE POLICY IN THE NFL PERIOD…

i don’t believe it is fair.if he complied with all that was asked of him, what more could he do!so a couple of people made allegations. that’s all they are is allegations.it has been proven however that joey porter committed felonious assault and robbery against levi jones and all he gets is a fine!it seems to me that roger goodell is trying to make an example of the entire organization because of all the other arrests.

Well, by Tim’s comment I’d say that he is an expert on stupid, but I agree with Michele. Odell has done what was asked of him and if his case is to be any kind of measuring stick, Pacman Jones, Vick and others should be looking at lifetime bans.

This will not affect the Bengals terribly. They have already prepared for this possibility, but it certainly is a shock. Unless there is more to this story we do not know about, this is a ridiculous punishment. He had done everything the NFL asked of him and his offenses were nothing compared to others in the NFL and his penalty is much steeper. He has already been suspended for an entire year. Absolutely horrible decision!!!
