BENGALS NOTES

Tight ends needed, Yale alum responds

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — The Cincinnati Bengals sent out an All Points Bulletin for a tight end, and Nate Lawrie answered the call.

The 6-foot-7, 256-pounder from Yale signed a contract on Thursday.

Extras

Lawrie was a sixth-round draft pick by Tampa Bay in 2004. New Orleans claimed him off waivers in 2005, and he spent two seasons with the Saints.

He has two catches for 32 yards in 15 career games with no starts.

The Bengals were down to two healthy tight ends after Tim Day landed on crutches with a sprained knee. He'll have arthroscopic surgery today and be sidelined at least two weeks.

The club needs Lawrie to take some pressure off Reggie Kelly and Daniel Coats. If he makes the squad, Lawrie will join safety Dick Jauron (1978-81) — the current head coach of the Buffalo Bills — as the only Bengals alumnus from Yale.

'Adjust, move on'

The wide receiver position has fallen victim to the injury bug, too.

Tab Perry is sidelined with soreness in his right hip, and Glenn Holt is nursing a strained hamstring.

"That's the way training camp seems to go, this little run on injuries," head coach Marvin Lewis said. "But you adjust, move on, and work on other areas of your offense as far as plugging different people in. Maybe we go with a little more three-wide or four-wide looks."

That's good news for wideouts Bennie Brazell, Reggie McNeal and Skyler Green. The trio is competing for the No. 3 spot behind Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh in the wake of Chris Henry's eight-game suspension, which begins Sept. 3.

Fairborn fever

The sixth-grade Wee Hawks of Fairborn got the thrill of a lifetime when they met Lewis and linebacker Matt Muncy on the field after practice.

Troy Blackburn, Bengals director of business development, arranged the visit with Hawks assistant coach Ernie Moore.

Twenty-three players clad in sky-blue jerseys made the trip with parents and coaches.

"We've got two clubs combining this year, and we thought this would be a good way to join them together as one," Wee Hawks head coach Perry Conley said. "It was an outstanding experience. It couldn't get any better."

Pride of Lima

Bryan Andrews, an undrafted rookie defensive end from Wake Forest and Lima Senior High School, wants to make an impact at tonight's scrimmage and Saturday's mock game.

"This is real critical," he said. "But I'm not going to put too much pressure on myself. I know the plays. I just need to handle my responsibilities and try to have fun. I want the coaches to notice me. I want them to say, 'That guy's getting to the quarterback and making big plays.' "

Friendly reminder

Fans attending tonight's scrimmage should plan to arrive early because of the anticipated traffic jam at Toyota Stadium. Gates open at 4:30 p.m.
