Chick Ludwig: Training camp breeds memorable moments
Thursday, August 16, 2007
GEORGETOWN, Ky. — A list of memories from Cincinnati Bengals Training Camp 2007 at Georgetown College. Just call it my "baker's dozen."
Extras
1. Quick wit: Linebacker Caleb Miller was signing autographs when two fans invited him to dinner at a Mexican restaurant.
"I'd love to, but I can't," Miller said. "Tell the warden (head coach Marvin Lewis) to let me out — 'Georgetown Redemption.'"
2. Silver screen: Four luxury buses took the team to a private screening of the movie, "Rescue Dawn."
Based on actual events, it's about a captured American pilot's struggle for survival in a Vietnam-era version of "The Great Escape."
"It taught us to keep fighting, no matter what," tight end Daniel Coats said.
3. Shakin' hands: At the final night practice, wide receiver Chad Johnson caught a pass near the sideline, stepped out of bounds and promptly shook hands with team President Mike Brown, who chuckled while the crowd cheered.
4. Sun block: Interviewing 6-foot-7, 339-pound offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth is always a pleasure because he's a human shade tree.
5. Candid camera: Center Eric Ghiaciuc paused to chat and have his picture taken with Gregory Nelson, an eighth-grader at Hopewell Elementary School in West Chester Twp. who uses a wheelchair.
Ghiaciuc, who studied physical education and special education at Central Michigan, has a big heart for little kids with special needs.
6. Role model: Linebacker Andre Frazier's voice crackled with emotion as he spoke about his father, ex-Bengal Guy Frazier.
"My dad taught me to strive to be the best," he said. "You never want to be an also-ran. You want to be the one that wins the race. He's a great role model."
7. Supernanny: Jo Frost, ABC-TV's "Supernanny," was here to help a family cope with its badly behaved children. Kicker Shayne Graham and safety Madieu Williams taught the kids the value of teamwork. I said hello to the two bratty boys after the filming, and they just snarled at me.
8. Nice kick: Graham and ex-Bengals kicker Doug Pelfrey hosted a group of children for dinner and practice as part of their Kicks for Kids foundation. The kickers said they had as much fun as the kids.
9. Muncy mania: Linebacker Matt Muncy signed autographs for the sixth-grade Wee Hawks of Fairborn.
"They almost didn't believe I was from Miamisburg," Muncy said. "It was really cool to talk to them."
10. Quote machine: Rookie defensive end Xzavie Jackson on his quest to make the team: "Life is all about a fight. The football field is the same way. I'm out there fighting every play, every down, trying to get paid."
11. Toledo Bully: Veteran defensive end Bryan Robinson loves pulling pranks on the rookies.
"Let's wait until the 53-man roster comes out," he said. "Then I can have a little bit of fun."
12. Fists fly: Tuesday's rumble between Chad Johnson and Madieu Williams was a clear sign the Bengals are ready to get the season under way. It was nice to see a defensive back not back down from "Ocho Cinco's" antics.
13. The Scrambler: Wednesday's surprise visit by ex-Bengals quarterback Virgil Carter spoke volumes. Alumni players long to reconnect with the team.
