BENGALS NOTES

Ex-Buckeye is Ravens? No. 3 QB

Quarterback Troy Smith has accomplished two of his three goals. It could take a while to reach the coveted third plateau.

The 2006 Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State got drafted — he was the final pick in the fifth round (No. 174 overall) — and made Baltimore's 53-man roster.

Extras

But he won't play unless starter Steve McNair and backup Kyle Boller either get injured or fail miserably. Smith is running the scout team and will be the Ravens' No. 3 quarterback against the Bengals on Monday night.

"Troy is progressing like all young quarterbacks," Ravens head coach Brian Billick said. "He's got all the tools. I see no reason why Troy can't be an NFL quarterback. It's a steep learning curve, and now it gets even tougher (because) he doesn't get quite the same individual attention.

"Obviously, the starters get the reps along with Kyle. (Smith's) reps have to come vicariously in meetings and watching it. He's busy running Cincinnati's offense right now. The learning curve is tougher for a young quarterback. There's a lot to learn, and he's knee-deep in it."

Who's in, who's out

Center Dan Santucci went from Cincinnati to Indianapolis back to Cincinnati again, as the Bengals reacquired their rookie seventh-round draft pick Friday, signing him off the Colts practice squad. He joins the 53-man active roster.

He played in all four Bengals preseason games, survived final cuts last Saturday only to get waived Sunday. He signed with the Colts practice squad before being re-signed by the Bengals.

To make room, the Bengals terminated the contract of receiver Antonio Chatman, releasing him to free agency.

The club also signed receiver Jesse Holley to the practice squad and placed tight end Tim Day (hamstring) on the practice squad/injured list.

Injury report

The good news is kicker Shayne Graham (hip) and wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh (knee) are probable for Monday's game.

The bad news is right offensive tackle Willie Anderson (right foot), center Eric Ghiaciuc (neck) and cornerback Johnathan Joseph (left foot) are questionable.

Anderson participated fully in practice Friday, while Joseph saw limited time, and Ghiaciuc did not practice. If Ghiaciuc can't go, Alex Stepanovich will start.

Who's the backup?

Will quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick serve as Carson Palmer's backup, or will rookie Jeff Rowe be No. 2?

"Ryan's absorbed the offense well," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said. "You'll see Monday who we list as No. 2."
