Bengals Notes
'Ridiculous' errors unacceptable, Smith says
Comment: How would you fix the Bengals' defense?
Monday, September 17, 2007
CLEVELAND — Justin Smith summed up the Bengals' defensive performance perfectly.
"It's ridiculous," the veteran defensive end said in the wake of Cincinnati's 51-45 loss at on Sunday. He also used the words "embarrassing," "inexcusable" and "terrible."
Extras
The defense got torched for 554 yards — 328 passing and 226 rushing — by a Browns squad that suffered a 34-7 loss to Pittsburgh the same weekend the Bengals yielded 314 yards in a 27-20 victory over Baltimore.
"At this level, you can't have mental errors," Smith added. "Letting guys run up and down the field, that's what killed us. We went to a base defense, and we're still not stacked right. Guys are too good, too fast, too strong for you not to be where you need to be and then not to exploit it."
Not so special
How do the special teams coverage units smell? Pinch your nose.
After giving up 245 return yards to the Ravens last week, the Bengals yielded 206 this week, including Joshua Cribbs' 85-yard kickoff return that set up Joe Jurevicius' 9-yard TD reception from Derek Anderson for a 20-14 Browns' lead.
A beer bath
Wide receiver Chad Johnson had a monster game — 11 catches, 209 yards, two TDs — then kept his promise by leaping into the Dawg Pound, where he got beer poured on him.
"That was cool. That was fun," Johnson said. "I gave the fans their money's worth."
With his performance, Johnson became the Bengals' career receiving yards leader with 7,229, shattering the old mark of 7,101 set by Isaac Curtis from 1973-84.
"That's pretty good, isn't it?" Johnson said. "The loss is bad, but to see where we are in Week 2 as an offense, and to know we're going to get better week to week, it's scary."
Holt on fire
Glenn Holt replaced Tab Perry as the kickoff returner and No. 3 receiver after Perry suffered a hamstring injury, and Holt played the best game of his two-year career.
Holt piled up 229 all-purpose yards — six kickoff returns for 177 (29.5), including a 65-yarder, plus five receptions for 52 yards and a 7-yard TD.
"I wanted to showcase my talent," Holt said. "But I'm still sad we lost the game."
Quick hitters
• Middle linebacker Ahmad Brooks exited in the first half with a groin injury, and Caleb Miller struggled in his place. He dropped a potential interception and got burned against the run and pass.
"I have no excuses," Miller said. "I played the worst game I've ever played."
• The Bengals defense forced only one turnover — an interception — and didn't sack Anderson, who got great protection from his offensive line.
The lack of pressure allowed Anderson to play an easy game of pitch and catch against the Bengals' cornerbacks.
• The Bengals kissed their seven-game winning streak in September good-bye.

I cannot believe one game and everyone thinks the Browns are good. They always play well against the Bengals. I love the Bengals but do not hate the Browns. I do hate the Steelers and always will. Let’s remember that the Browns will not be good this year or the next several years. They have 20 first round picks on the roster and still suck!! I say the Bengals will still make the playoffs and the Browns will get another couple of first round picks to waste.
Steelers 0-2 w/us!!
Go Bengals!!

Why did the Bengals let a man after catching a pass “SLIDE” 3 yards into the end zone, that Bengal could have touched him down on the 2 or 3 yard line, he didn’t do his job although it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. LAZY>LAZY and MORE LAZY

The Bengals may not have had their “A” game on Sunday, but the Browns surprised everyone with their offense. I am a die hard Bengals fan and the last Browns catch was killer no matter who you favorite team was. The catch was great and being a football fan you have to respect a great catch no matter where it comes from. Bengals are going to step it up next week, so be ready! Never underestimate the TIGER!

It is really amusing to read all the whining by Bengals fans. They are probably all wearing steeler garb now since they lost as that is their usual proceedure. Browns fans are loyal- win, lose, or draw!

Personally, I think that the defense thought yesterday was a “day off” for them and they stayed home in Cincy instead of going to work in Cleveland. I was hopng to see that defense show up yesteday that was there for the team last Monday night when they stopped the Ravens just a foot from the goal line and then intercepted the ball right inside the end zone.

I’ve worked in Cincy for 15 years and two things I’ve always noticed from Bengals fans they’re very fair weather, and…Every September…”We’re going to the Superbowl”…every December…”there’s always next year”! For all you orange, black and brown fans…It’s never too late to convert to a Champion…The Steeler Nation will take you.

Chad, I am sure you watched the whole game so you you are aware of the TJ touchdown in which he only had one foot in bounds or the Rudi touchdown in which he went out of bound on the 4 yard line. I am a Bengals season ticket holder as well but the refree did not give that game to the Browns. The Bengals gave that game to the Browns.

Thank God for the NFL. Without it, people who are fixated over “pros” who earn millions a season and could care less for them, would have to worry about other things, like 1) jobs leaving the state in droves, 2) taxes that never quit going up for less and less in services rendered, 3) failing public schools that money alone will never fix or 4) skyrocketing crime. Why it must be the Bengals and the Browns alone that make life worth living in Ohio, but why be cynical?

Start getting ready for next week. If you win next week get on here hoot and holler and hope the steelers lose. Then you’ll be tied for first. Real Browns fan hate the Raven and Steelers more than the Bengals anyways. It was a bad game by both D’s and the Browns wanted it more. The bengals will be fine.

I have been saying this since Paul Brown died as long has Cheapscape Mike Brown or his daughter Katie Blackburn is still owns the team an 8 and 8 records makes them tons of money. They are in the very top of money maker teams in the NFL. They don’t want to make the playoff’s it costs Mikey money. The Bengal’s are the greediest team in NFL buy your hundred dollar tickets, pay your city taxes to the Bengals, while Mikey is laffing to the Bank. The jokes on you season ticket holder HAH HAH!

Of course 51 worries me. Especially since it was against a team that looked totally inept at moving the football the week before. But, I follow a team that can score points in bunches against anyone in the league. Can’t say the same for the Browns.

I can’t believe how many whining Bengals fans are in here. We won fair and square despite strange disappearing flags and blind officiating.
We won the game, get over it. Theres no need to resort to insults, most of us still hate the Steelers and Ravens more. You guys still have an excellent team with great potential and maybe this will be a wake up call to your defensive coordinator.
Good luck unless your playing us.

Actually, I have been a season ticket holder for over 15 years. No crying here. If I was crying I would be outraged over the one and a half extra yards the zebras gave Edwards on the 3rd and 9 play. Which was a ludicrous spot. Gave the Browns a new set of downs and chewed up two precious minutes of game time.

Natter instead of matter is a typo, not a grammatical error. But that is neither here nor there. And no, I place the blame for this loss squarly on Marvin Lewis. We weren’t ready to play, and sometimes the gameplan isn’t working and you need to be able to improvise your play calling to fit the game. Pittsburg has a solid D, they always do. But if you think you can hold us under 24 points you are sadly mistaken. But if the Bengal D doesn’t tighten up and fast, it may take 40+ a week to win.

Chad you are correct. With how well this comment box works its real hard to mess up. Or would it be “matter” instead of “natter” Would Anderson put up 5 on Pitt? You can say what you want but the truth is 71 pts, to 10. Or are you in full support of Cleveland now? Are they that much better? How about 215 yds running, compared to 35yds.
So I will continue to think that Pitt is more likely to beat good team, you just keep yelling who dey.
By Chad

Wouldn’t the result be Pittsburg winning the division and our defense being the cause??? Insted of our defense being the result of Pittsburg winning the division. Doesn’t natter All due respect Brownie fans, but Pittsburg hasn’t beat anyone worth a damn to get to 2-0. A Charlie Frye led Browns team that might have beat Michigan, and the Bills. They will both be drafting in the top 5 next year. See you in week 8.

I guess I am one of those bandwagon fans, been a Bears fan for 20 years, and live between cincy and dayton. What in the world in the past 17 years would make me switch to these teams? One playoff spot in 16 years? 51 points allowed? or Cleveland, with one of the worst coaches in their history? He is now 2-12 vs his division. And stop crying for Thurman and C. Henry, they both should have been cut at the start of last year. Your defense will be the result in Pittsburgh winning another division.

Unfortunately, the Cinci defense didn’t make the bus trip up I-71. What happened yesterday with Cinci’s D is exactly what I was afraid of after the pre-season - D-backs and safeties giving up 20+ yards a pop. To paraphrase Dennis Greene, “They are what we thought they were!” Fire Chuck - yeah, maybe, but I wouldn’t bet on it happening. Its going to be a tough, long year in the AFC Central. GO BENGALS!

…All Bengal opponents raise it another notch when they play us,and its not due to our defense. Our Bengals are a team that most other teams would rather not play if their playoff hopes are at stake.A dangerous team indeed,in spite of the defensive liabilities.Facing the Browns under the same circumstances, opposing NFL teams would drool over their chances if facing the Browns. The Browns will not finish above the Bengals this year, nor any year in the forseeable future.

Why is anyone surprised the Browns shredded the Bengals “D”…or lackthereof. Nothing ever changes. Cleveland gets crushed and embrrassed in their home opener, trade Frye and go with a QB who is 0-3 lifetime plus throws zero TD’s in the preseason. We make him look like the 2nd coming of Joe Montana. Anderson won’t throw 5 TD’s in the next three games combined! Only the Bengals. Pathetic. Short leash Marvin…you’re on one now.

Weel, first off the Steelers will win the divison and the rest will not make the wild card. I AM and have been a Browns fan clear back to the old days when football was played the way it should be. Are the Browns the worst team in football? Of course not. Are the as good as seen against the Bengels? Of course not. I love the Bengals but saw this coming a mile away. One thing our team has never been able to do is to stay consistent. Leslie Frazier is doing all right up in Minnesota. I know it is easier to get rid of a d coordinator but for what??-to leave the same problem for the next guy? We knew going into this year our defense was a liability but more of a surprise is that our special teams are terrible-terrible. Unless we really turn it around we will be in for a short season.

Bengals have been a cheezy little flea market team since 1968. Small minded, small talent, small market people running the team. Neither team has a defense. This game was a joke to watch if you like defense. Looked more like a track meet. No defensive line pressure on quarterback and absolutely no pass coverage from either team. Bengals are demonstrating their inconsistency of play after two games. At best, 9-7 record, hopefully another 8-8- miss the playoffs again season.

Its the same old excuses we have heard for the past few years from Marvin Lewis. I believe he has been exposed for the fraud that he is as a defensive coach and now as a head coach. The only reason he was such a “genius” in Baltimore was the players he had, whe were drafted by someone else. This team looked just like the unfocused, undisciplined team we watched last year. Looks as though we will have to suffer through another long embarrasing year.Time for Marvin to go!!

Think about this… Chuck has his defense go to a base defense after they are getting man handled all game. Isn’t that contrary to what you would want to do? This isn’t preseason! The Bengals have talented players on defense, but their schemes and blitzing tiny cornerbacks all the time is worthless. It’s time for a REAL defensive coordinator. Let the cornerbacks cover like their ability allows them to, and be aggressive up front. Watch the Bears!

I saw where a couple of people called for Breshahan’s head, well, he’s the DC, but he isn’t on the field. The players are on the hook for this one.

Not only do the Browns still suck, but notice most of them can’t spell. For the last time its LOSE or LOSING not LOOSE or LOOSING.

Please FIRE Chuck Bresnahan. He obviously has no clue how to have defensive strategy when the cornerbacks are 10 yards off the wide receivers at the line of scrimmage, and for the last few years the linebackers never cover the tight ends! Remember last year’s game against Pittsburgh at the end of the year? Brian Simmons missed that assignment and got cut. You can only blame the players so much for the defense they are being told to play. Chuck needs to go.

Steeler Nation loves the Bungles! You guys are hot! You make a second string QB look like a John Elway! I’ll bet Ol’ Chad is still licking the beer out of his thong.

It’s only one loss. That is the beauty of the NFL. On any given Sunday, one team can beat another. The Browns played great, and neither defense looked good at all. It is a long season, and we will meet again. I wish the Browns good luck in their future games, and hope that both teams make the playoffs. It would be fantastic, and grat for Ohio football. I will still remain a Bengals fan as I did throughout the 90’s.

Looking at the big picture, it’s apparent that the tradition of incompetence and finding ways to lose is one that is being “honored” by both Ohio teams again….looks like another good year for the other teams in their division. I suppose it would be fun to watch Cleveland and Cincy play each other every week so we all could learn some new intramural plays.

I love it. It goes to show you what happens when you overlook your opponent. I live in Hamilton and am proud to be a Browns fan. Boo-dey to all of you bandwagon fans. How does it feel? I hope you lose every other division game. You were lucky against a Ravens team that tried to give you the game several times. And you just kept giving right back. Go Browns!!!!!!!!!

Huh? Aint that funny all the Bunghole fans were on here last week talking it up like they were next coming of Christ, and they loose. Well looks like that bandwagon is going to get a little lighter.

Bad D and NO special teams!!! It’s going to be a very long year. Why do the Bengals have more injuries than everyone else? How many draft choices have failed to contribute due to injury or off field behavior? This unfortunately comes down to Marvin. It’s tragic to waste a world class QB like this.

Take away the freebie touchdown that the blind review ref gave the bungles and the flags that were strangly picked up and how would the game have looked

same defense as we had last 15 years can not stop the run so were done. only way to win is out score other team only time we stop the run is when other teams running backs trip over a fallen bengal player. as for a pass rush other team qb can have lunch back there waiting for a receiver to get open and there is blown coverages ever where. special teams ha they are special ok

Fire Chucky!!! Need a new D coordinator, one that schemes for pressure on the QB not just the threat of pressure.
