Bengals Notes

Lewis says only heat he feels is self-created

Comment: What can be done to save the Bengals' season?

Staff Writer

Monday, October 15, 2007

Marvin Lewis' contract as Bengals head coach runs through the 2010 season, so he has plenty of job security. Nevertheless, he feels the heat of a 1-4 start.

"It's only the heat I generate on myself, fortunately or unfortunately, however you want to put it," Lewis said Monday. "So I guess I'll disappoint the fans who think there is heat, OK?

Extras

"My only heat is internal, and that's what drives me. That's the good thing, I guess, about this position. I'm not going to get concerned and they don't need to be concerned one way or another. Just go back to being loud and cheering."

Been there, done that

Lewis has been here before. He was 1-4 his first two seasons (2003 and 2004), rebounding to finish 8-8 both times. The Bengals reached the playoffs in 2005, starting 5-1 and finishing 11-5. They swaggered to a 3-0 start in '06, but staggered to an 0-3 finish and ended up 8-8 for the third time in four years.

They're hoping the turnaround starts against the visiting New York Jets on Sunday.

"The Jets were a playoff team a year ago and they're not quite where they want to be, so it's going to be a big game for us, It's a 4 o'clock game, so our fans will be revved up and ready to go, and we're going to revved up, ready to play."

Cloudy future

Tailback Chris Perry, who fracture his right ankle at Cleveland last Nov. 26, is eligible to come off the Physically Unable to Perform list and begin practicing this week. He's not sure if he's ready.

"I feel good," Perry said. "We'll have to decide if I'm going to practice. Once I get to the point where I feel I'm able to do so, we'll start. It's a matter of everybody putting their heads together and deciding it's time and I feel right.

"I would love to be playing. But there are some things you have to consider before you play. You can't get out there and (an injury) happens again, God forbid. You've got to make sure you're at your best because you can't help your team if you're not out there. Hopefully, I can get out there as soon as possible."

Undecided at tackle

Will Andrew Whitworth start at left offensive tackle or does Levi Jones get another chance? Jones was benched early in the second quarter at Kansas City.

"We'll make that decision as we come through the week," Lewis said. "Levi is disappointed in how he was able to perform."

Whitworth didn't allow any sacks against Chiefs' pass rusher Jared Allen

"We didn't win the game and we're not going to give any hoorays to anybody around here," Lewis added.

Jeanty may return

Willie Anderson, Ethan Kilmer and Tab Perry likely won't play against the Jets.

"We'll see where (middle linebacker) Ahmad Brooks (groin) is as the week goes on," Lewis said. "Caleb Miller (back) and Rashad Jeanty (shin) both have opportunities to return to practice this week and should be ready."

Quote machine

"I really don't know what my future is here. Hopefully, I can be here and help this team out as much as possible. But I don't know what their plans are upstairs (in the executive offices), to be honest." — Perry

How I love the Bungals nation all cryin out tryin to get Cowher to come and rescue them… Anyone know who the Steelers D Coord is? That is right… Dick LeBeau… the man you ran out of town… it ain’t the coach ladies… it is the organization that wins… and the organization you cheer for SUCKS!!!! Unless things change within the organization, no coach, including Cowher will make a difference! Lewis is a great coach and will and has succeeded every where he has been.. unitl now…. Hmmmm

Who Dey? We Dey… The Bungals will salvage their season by winning their last 3 or 4 games to finish at or near .500 and give all the idiots who actually cheer for these losers hope for next year… only to be crushed again by a bunch of “me first” players… no worries though, at your current pace, you should be back in the playoffs again by 2015…

I’m glad they stink, but there are a few ways that they can be fixed:

1) Trade Chad Johnson for some draft picks (maybe a 1st and a 3rd rounder), guys who are high-character and talented, not some guy who was a head case but very talented.

2) Use the ENTIRE 2008 draft on the following: 1a. DT 1b. OL 2. LB 3a. DT 3b. LB 4. OL 5. LB 6. Special teams demon LB 7. Special teams demon DL

3) Force Marvin to dump his O-coord, D-coord and ST-coord. If he doesn’t, fire him.

No, there is no salvaging the season. These guys were done before it started. It was obvious coming out of training camp. The window of opportunity for a Super Bowl is nearly shut.

Diehard is absolutely right. The game is won in the trenches, and the Bengals - whether due to injury or inability - are losing it.My grandma could rush for 1000 yards in Denver, and Derek Anderson can throw for 5 touchdowns in Cleveland, because of the their O-lines.Yes, the coaches need to do a better job of getting some players correctly motivated.Yes, we need a stud linebacker. The guys we have just aren’t performing to thier potential this year, for a variety of reasons.

I get tired of listening to these idiots throw out their great ideas on how the fix the Bengals. The game of football is won and lost on the line of scrimmage. It doesn’t matter who you have throwing it, running it, or catching it. If there are no holes or no pass protection you are not going to be successful. If there is no pass rush or gap responsibility on runs you are not going to be successful. It all starts up front on both sides of the ball. GO BENGALS!!!

It all starts with #85. That stupid stuff he has been doing for years should have been stopped. He is a self promoter and not a team player. Marvin lost this team long before this year. They are 1-7 in their last 8. What a huge waste of a very good QB. Palmer is a top 3 QB in the NFL and Lewis is going to get him killed. Until #85 shuts up or goes away, it is not going to change.

so what if this year is a bust…we will get a good draft pick and maybe get some defense out of it…we might even get odel thurman back but i dont know if he will be aloud back on our team…i think the worste that the team will finish is 8-8 but all i care about is beating the gay steelers…

What is happening to your beloved Bengals right now should not surprise any of you. There are no quick fixes for your team… you stink! It is time for all of you to jump back into your closets and start denying your loyalty again. But look at the bright side, 15 years from now, when you finally have another winning season, you can all pull out your dusty Chad Johnson jerseys and start yelling who dey again!

Bring in Marty Schottehimer as the general manager and bring in the chin to handle business the sidelines, all the successful teams have a general manager and coach, i.e. Pats ad Colts. Also for god sakes draft/sign some free agents that can TACKLE!!!!!

How about lighting a fire under palmer. He has been sub par and is doesn’t want to step up in the pocket. He is getting his receivers set up to get killed.

Poor pass defense, not enough quaterback pressure, the opposing quaterbaack gets to sit back and complete pass after pass.

Chad needs to pull his head out of his @## and be a team player or Marvin need to bench him. We are losing games with him in, what could possibly happen with him out MAYBE A WIN. Marvin has bought a lot to cincy bengals and has a lot more to bring. He will get us there. WHO DEY!!

When you lack disclipline and have thugs being arrested 9 times in one year, its time to replace the head coach. Several comments above blame the offense and defensive coaches. Lewis is in charge of all of them. If he thinks that there is a better way of running either one, its his responsibility to do so. This team has as much talent on offense as anyone, but can’t seem to cash in on all that talent. Fire the man in charge. Good bye Marvin

The Bengals have had one winning season (and one playoff appearance) in the past 16 years. Yes, 16 years! Two stadiums, several coaches, and 100’s of players. The main problem is the owner, Mike Brown. Until he sells the team to a someone who knows how to run an NFL team, we will continue to suffer with the “Bungals.”

Every year 3/8 of the NFL teams go to the playoffs. Yet Cincinnati has gone only once since 1990. Mike Brown’s team has lost 7 of its past 8 games, and is 54-139 overall.

By dan

October 15, 2007 7:06 PM | Link to this

No offensive line. That’s why Cincy can’t run the ball when they need to. Only RG Williams is doing his job every week. And when you can’t run, you can’t pass.

No linebackers. We’re using DLs as LBs because we’re nonexistent at LB right now. This is why we can’t stop anybody (no pass rush, no consistent run stuff, no pass coverage underneath).

Chad is no T.O. and Palmer is no Payton Manning. They need to bench Chad and go back in the huddle to call plays.

Chad(its all about me)Johnson is scared to make a play. He should have had that ball on the last interception. That is 2 games in a row that could have been wins because of his play. TJ is the MAN!!!

Ok Flav o Flav: The Bengals don’t/can’t score. Why would we run 4/5 wide outs? They would have 3x the number of int. with all the wide outs running the wrong routes! The Bengals stink.

By Change Something

October 15, 2007 3:19 PM | Link to this

I don’t blame this completely on Marvin…what about the O coordinator. We have too many receivers, yet we only run 2 and 3 wide, I would like to see 4 and 5 wide. We have run and shoot type players that they are trying to make into a grind it out running game. We need to play to our strengths, our defense has problems and injuries, so just outscore people. Don’t control clock, control the scoreboard, make somebody else score with us, cause I don’t think many teams can.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say Fire Marvin. I mean I can’t remember when the Bengals had a team worth cheering for before Marvin came into the picture. I believe he needs to get tougher on the guys and they need to do a lot better with draft picks this year. Carson needs some practice and how to move out of the pocket sometimes. It just looks like they dont want to win! As soon as we come out of that slump I look for good things from the Bengals. I wont be deserting them anytime soon. WHO DEY!!

It is always amusing to see just how little you guys really understand football; the problem is not the secondary it is lack of pass rushing and they don’t have anyone who can step up and make it better at the present time. Marvin definately should have been thinking pass rusher via trade or draft. Too much time to throw the football is the problem! Marvin is at a point where he needs to reassess his current strategy and make the necessary adjustments(ie more full blitzing/safety blitzing u

No running attack is the bulk of the problem with the O.I love Kenny Watson but he isn’t the answer. Plus I cannot remember a year where the injuries have piled up like they have this year. Is there a healthy person on the team? When 2 high draft running back are out and you are using scrap pile line backers, you are not going to win, period.I did think they played much better in the second half on defense and I hope they start getting some of their injured players back. Either way go Bengals!

I still say it’s defensive coordinator coaching that sucks. How else do your guys not realize when to cover Tony Gonzalez, who is their #1 receiver?! Again, that’s poor coaching to not have someone assigned to that guy ALL THE TIME. Bengals defense is just undermanned, and obviously the draft choices we took are not panning out. Leon Hall got burnt on 3rd and 15 all day long! Until Mike Brown shells out the money for better staffing to scout draft players and sign better free agents….

Replace Marvin? Are you nuts? He has brought back the soul of this cities football team, every team has a bad streak now and again and I will concide that if Marvin does not bring the team back in line they will be 1-15 but to fire him? I think that is a little extreme, and it shows me that you have no idea what he has brought to the Bengals and the city. Yes there are bad apples on EVERY football team but can you honestly tell me that you liked the old Bengals who went 27-127 through the 90’s?

Replace Marvin.. He was brought here to build a defence, and this defence is one of the worst ever to play the game.

I’m a life long Bengals fan, and am sick of seeing terrible play calls, and egos running this “Professional Football team”
