Steelers-Bengals a nasty rivalry
Bengals looking to break Pittsburgh's six-game winning streak in Cincinnati.
Wednesday, October 24, 2007
> What are your thoughts on the rivalry?
CINCINNATI — The guys in stripes don't really care for the Steelers.
"We don't like Pittsburgh and they don't like us," Bengals linebacker Caleb Miller said in anticipation of Sunday's game at Paul Brown Stadium. "That's the way it always has been here."
Extras
If possible, there's been even more acrimony the past couple years. In 2005 and 2006, the Bengals' seasons have ended with home losses to Pittsburgh.
With a win Sunday, Cincinnati (2-4) would be a game behind Pittsburgh (4-2). A loss means a three-game deficit and puts a serious damper on any Bengals playoff hopes. The Steelers have won six straight in Cincinnati.
"I don't know," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said of that streak. "We're going to try to figure it out this Sunday."
In '05, Cincinnati lost at home (27-13) and then won at Pittsburgh, 38-31. That win all but iced the Bengals' AFC North title.
"It's like going from a black-and-white TV to a color TV," Bengals receiver Chad Johnson said after that game. "It was Pittsburgh, it's Cincinnati now, and it'll probably be that way for a while."
It wasn't.
The Steelers won the wild card game at Cincinnati, 31-17, remembered most for Kimo von Oelhoffen's hit on Carson Palmer that ripped the Cincy quarterback's knee ligaments. Pittsburgh won the Super Bowl that season.
Last year, the Bengals won 28-20 at Heinz Field. The Sports Illustrated cover that week showed Miller tackling Hines Ward with the headline, "The Nastiest Rivalry in the NFL."
With a chance to make the playoffs in last year's regular-season finale, Cincinnati fell to Pittsburgh at home in overtime, 23-17.
Asked if the rivalry is fun or nasty, defensive end John Thornton said: "It's both. Here it's more nasty because we haven't won. There it's fun because we always win up there (three of the last four). We have to change that around."
Miller said the Bengals need wins, no matter the opponents. But if it's Pittsburgh in the way, all the better.
"We have to win the rest of our games," Miller said. "And it happens to be a team that we would love to break into many pieces if we get the opportunity."

Hey Dan, you catch the game? amazing that you make no sense at all, Rothlesburger is still a young quaterback, he makes mistakes, but he’s also won a superbowl. say what you will but at least go by the facts, we lead our divison. dominated every team in our division. and have the 1 defense in the league. the only thing that is worthless, is your stupid comments. 5-2. wait till we stomp those cheating Patriots, we will win that game.

And Steelers fans want to talk about all the arrest we had. The San Diego chargers had just about as many and their starting linebacker got shot by police. They haven’t had any off-field incidents this year. There isn’t a team in the NFL that hasn’t had any problems with their players. Santanio Holmes was charged with domestic abuse. Joey Porter was shot and jumped Levi Jones in a casino. The Steelers aren’t the saints they think they are.

The key to beating the Steelers is to make Worthlisberger throw the ball. His record when he throws it more than 25 times is 6-10. He is not the QB god that brainless Steelers fans think he is. If the game is put on his shoulders, he collapses like a paper bag. With Willie Parker’s tendency to fumble the ball, things look good for Bengals fans.

Hey Chris. Apparently you’ve never been to Cleveland or Peeburgh if you think Cincy is bad. And how’d you find yourself on a Dayton website? Go back to your hole. As far as Chad in the HOF. In just 6 seasons he has more pro bowls than Swann and Stallworth, over 2,000 more yards than Swann, and will soon pass Stallworth & Ward in all categories. So if he isn’t in, then none of those 3 deserve it. And I know, rings, rings, rings. Should you be in the Hall just because you’re on a good team?

Hello bungles fans! I see a lot of whining on here…To Doco and Jeff…are you guys smoking the lovely crack they have in the dingiest city in the world? I used to drive thru Cincy all the time-JUST DRIVE THRU-and my world seemed to go from color to B&W-kind of like Stillers TV-right, Chad? HOF jacket…he should keep that jacket b/c that’s about as close to the Hall as he’s getting. I almost feel bad about Marvin b/c he’s a local…almost

Chad,
Actually, the only domestic abuse that will take place is at PBS. The Bengals will just be on the receiving end of it. And it’s completely legal - I know, I’ve been a witness to it for years.
On a side note, you only have to push the little gray button once. Your comments were just as unfunny the last two times they were posted as they were the first time.

Chad,
Obviously you have no clue what embarrassment is, do you? Losing to a team one year removed from the AFCC game with no time left on the clock is not embarrassing. This is embarrassment:
The Steelers have beaten both New England and Indy this decade. Have the Bengals? Uh, no…

I guess if we were being humanitarians about this we should hope for a Steeler win this Sunday. We all know that the cases of domestic abuse go up the week following a Pittsburg loss.

Doco, I’ve never heard the Steelers whine, other than stuff like,
“Man, these Super Bowl rings sure are heavy!” “Having to travel for three playoff games might be a little difficult, but we’ll deal with it.” “We really hate to run the ball all the time, but if teams are too lame to stop it, that’s their problem.” “Hines, you could have at least given me a chance to hit him before you knocked him out!!”
So yeah, my mistake.

Hey Doco,
My “snot-nosed kid” (your words) was born and mostly raised in Cincinnati. And guess what? She’s a hardcore Steelers fan. So much for your “theory” that our kids will become Patriots fans. She’s in college now, and her dream job is to work in PR for the Steelers, though she knows that will be hard to achieve.
The thing that you Bungals fans (along with most of the league) just don’t get is that being a Steeler fan is in our DNA. It’s not a “choice.” It is who we are.

I bet the Bengals will allow Chris Henry to rejoin the team when the NFL lifts his suspension. Why? Because his value as a wide receiver is greater than the integrity of the Bengals’ front office. Does he deserve another chance? No. He is a repeat offender. He made bad choices - several times. Where is the Bengals’ integrity? He should not have played against the Steelers during the first game of the 2007 season. Other teams take the high road. Not the Bengals! Go Steelers!

Thank you KP for agreeing with me that the Steelers are whiners. I can’t seem to recall the Bengals whining though. Not even when they got arrested. They handle their depression from losing like real men. They get drunk and high and drive around speeding with underage girls. Of course the fans are going to whine though. All teams have some idiot fans. I’m done talking trash now because the Bengals are probably going to get completely annihilated Sunday. Enjoy it frontrunners!

“Have you ever seen a team with that much success talk trash and whine so much?!?”
No Doco, but I have seen a team with virtually no success, talk trash and whine more than anyone - THE BENGALS. Especially after the Steelers KICKED THEIR TEETH IN and won their 5th championship. Oh yeah, with a playoff berth on the line, great defense on Santonio Holmes last year. Gutless group of felons. Only thing worse is their deluded fans, thinking that they are SB-caliber.

I am jealous of the Steelers success, but not their MUSH-MOUTH mentality. Have you ever seen a team with that much success talk trash and whine so much?! Like Toothlessberger and the Chin whining about him getting hit low(No one in the Bengals organization complained about the Palmer hit). Or Porter and his posse robbing Levi Jones in Vegas. Or the secondary talking trash at the beginning of every game and crying by the end when they get torched by Chad and TJ. Is Ben still riding motorcycles?

Yeah, I admit some became fans because Pittsburgh was dominant. But the majority became fans because that’s how it works in Pittsburgh. Me? I declared the year they went 2-12 (‘69?). Most of my friends already were fans…long-suffering fans. And love to hate the Browns, but honestly would love to see the Browns win before I’d like the Bengals to win. And flat forget the Ravens…anyone who beats them are heroes in my book.

Who cares what the biggest rivalry is? The truth is that every team in the division is a rival.
What I think is funny is that every team the Steelers face want to make a big deal about it being “Steelers Week.” You all know deep down you want to have success and smash-mouth mentality of the Black and Gold!!

Wrong. Its a HUGE rivalry for Pittsburgh. HUGE. And Pittsburgh fans know it. They like to downplay it as a way of demeaning Cincinnati (a FAR better city than &hittsburgh by the way). Good try, but know one is buying that line of crap, Steelers fan.

Ahhh Steelers fans. Gotta love ‘em. A whole generation of frontrunners. Let me guess. You were born between ‘57 and ‘67 and became “fans” when you were pubescent and the Steelers were dominant. Just like all your snot-nosed kids are going to be Patriots fans. The Browns are definitely the traditional rival for the Steelers going back to 1950. But recent history has added alot of emotion to the Bengals rivalry. As evidenced by the oh-so-clever “fans” and their oh—so-witty “we dey” chant.

Go Steelers! I simply laugh at the Cincy media and fans as they consistently jump on and off the Beagles bandwagon. After their win over the Ravens on Monday night they were talking Super Bowl. Two weeks later they were talking about firing the entire coaching staff. And then the media complained about all of the Steelers’ fans in attendance at Paul Brown stadium. And they admonished their own fans for selling tickets to Steelers’ fans. Very funny indeed! Go Steelers! Beat them Beagles!

Richard = Clueless.
If it was such a dirty hit, why wasn’t KVO fined by the league (or penalized for that matter)? Simple physics - a 300-pound guy when moved in one direction is not easily (or quickly) going to move in another direction. The fact is, the game is over, the Steelers won and it’s a new season. A word of advice - call Santa, ask for a defense for next year, and quit blaming the Steelers for the Bengals deficiencies.

I think the rivalry is alot bigger for the bengals than the steelers, but as a steelers fan, i can honestly say that only the patriots top the bengals as far as the most anticipated games. no matter the result the benglas-steelers matchups have always been close, and i dont expect this one to be any different. the steelers have alot to prove after a big defensive letdown in denver, and the bengals finally got back on track last week and are looking to carry that momentum this week. WE DEY!

The Bengals - Steelers rivalry is heating up because the Bengals have been playing them tough, winning, winning in their stadium, beating them for the division title, and, generally, being a pain in the but to them and their fans!!

I have to agree with Kevin. I’m a diehard Bengal fan with a tattoo of the logo on my chest. Kimo has always been a clean player and he was pushed into Carson’s knee. The Browns/Ravens/Steelers rivalry is fiercer than anything between Pitt and Cincy. Do I hate Pitt? HECK YES! I also hate the Browns (if it’s brown, flush it down) and the Ravens. I also respect those teams and their players. It’s only because Cincy shares the division with them that I root so hard against those other 3 teams
By kevin

The Bengals and Steeler’s rivalry, not. The rivalry is only from the Bengals perspective not Pittsburgh, yes they are in the same division but Browns or Ravens matter more to Pittsburgh. It’s always been Cleveland and Pittsburgh but with the move of Cleveland to Baltimore it’s spread. The Bengals aspect is created by the Bengals to fire up the team and city. The Palmer incident is way over blowen, just look at the film Kemo was forced into Palmer by Palmers own Lineman, its there to help cincy.
