BUFFALO 33, CINCINNATI 21

Lost cause? Cincy season is on ropes after setback

X-rays on Johnson's neck come back normal after being carted off field with 1:53 left in road loss to Bills.

Comment: What should the Bengals do to improve?

Staff Writer

Monday, November 05, 2007

Wide receiver Chad Johnson was wheeled off the field on a stretcher, placed in an ambulance and taken to a room at Ralph Wilson Stadium for X-rays on his aching neck. Then it was off to a local hospital for a CAT scan and more tests.

With him, in the emergency room, was the Bengals' season.

Extras

They fell to 2-6 after absorbing a 33-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills, who improved to 4-4 with their fourth victory in five games after an 0-3 start.

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said Johnson never lost consciousness when he got sandwiched on a hit by Bills' safety Donte Whitner and linebacker Coy Wire at Buffalo's 37-yard line with 1:53 to play.

"He has movement in his body — fingers, arms and legs," Lewis said. "He underwent an X-ray here as a precaution because he was having some pain in his neck. So they did immobilize him."

Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan reported the results of the CAT scan on Johnson came back "normal" and Johnson made the team's charter flight home at 6:45 p.m.

Glenn Holt's 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and two Carson Palmer TDs were ruined by a Bengals defense that got lit up for 479 yards — nearly double Buffalo's total-yardage average (246.0) entering the game.

Stars of the game

Buffalo's dynamite duo of tailback Marshawn Lynch and wide receiver Lee Evans tie for the honor.

Evans caught nine passes for 165 yards and a TD. Meanwhile, Lynch scored on a 56-yard burst en route to 153 rushing yards, and tossed a halfback option pass to tight end Robert Royal for an 8-yard TD.

Goat of the game

Bengals cornerback Blue Adams was flagged for two penalties, including a 10-yard defensive holding on Kyle Larson's punt that gave the Bills a first down at the Bengals' 32, setting up Lynch's pass to Royal as Buffalo grabbed the lead for good.

Turning point

With the Bengals ahead 21-19 at 13:05 of the fourth quarter and facing a third-and-8 at their 22-yard line, Chad Johnson dropped a wide-open slant pass at the 42 that would've produced a first down and possible TD.

Buffalo responded with a pair of TDs in the final 5:51.

Quote machine

"I don't have words for the way we feel in this locker room about this game and about this season. We're just not a very good team. I'm not gonna try to explain it. It's frustrating. There's nothing more you can say about it." — Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer.

JC. You’re humorous. You have to have a sense of humor if you’re a Browns fan. We know because for the decade of the 90s, the Bengals were the worst franchise in all of sports, & yet their fans poured in (& even increased their own sales tax) to support them. It’s been said that Cubs fans are the most loyal. But Chicago is the 2nd largest city in the US & Wrigley seats 33,000. The Bengals are in a small market & still fill the 65,000 stadium. That’s loyality. Or stupidity. Browns fans can relate

I’ve been sporting my browns jersey EVERY single game day since they came back in 1999. Since the expansion, our combined record is 40-88. Don’t try to say Browns fans are fair-weather because we’ve all waited for the moment that we would become a decent team that can compete in the NFL. The reason I don’t like the bungles is because A. I never saw a bengals jersey until the year they went to the playoffs. B. They are annoying. C. They think Chad Johnson is God’s gift to the earth.

After many years a Reds and Bengals fan (both good, especially the Reds)and (the bad especially Bengals)I think I figured out both problems. Simply put the Reds hitters don’t get to face the Reds pitchers during the season. If they did would we complain about the Dunner’s 50 home runs, a team record for doubles and 18 games of 6+ runs a game? I think not. If the Bengals offense got to play against their defense twice a year would Carson, Chad, and TJ have MVP numbers? I think so.

If we continue doing what we are doing,…we will continue to get what we are getting…..And if nothing changes,…nothing changes,..obviously my Bengals are self-destructing,and have been under-achieving all season long.Trade Chad Johnson.?….Hell no,…and every team in the NFL would love to have him on their team,.those who deny that are liars. We will be spoiling a couple of teams shot at the playoffs I guarantee it-…Pitt…Balt..or Cleveland. The Bengals are still dangerous!!!WHO DEY!!!!!

You guys are the biggest turncoats in the history of sports. Fire Marvin lewis? Gimme a break. Is it his fault David Pollack broke his neck. What about Kenny Irons? How about all the injuries to Levi, Willie, Rudi and Chris Perry. How is he supposed to control the injuries to all the linebackers? Did he head butt John thornton?

One bad year and you want to fire the first coach in twenty years that took the Bengals to the playoffs. What exactly does a coach have to do to keep his job?

First off Browns fans get ready to crawl back under your slimy rock in Cleveland when the NFL decides to stop handing games to them for feeling sorry for a bunch of losers. OK now to what matters. First off a GM is definitely needed along with a few more scouts. Keep Marvin but a hole new defensive staff is needed, someone that will play a 3-4. Some personell changes would be let Justin walk as well as Madieu, Dexter, Deltha, Caleb, Landon, Thorton, Frostee, Bryan Robinson. More Later

Yeah, Chuck there are 11 guys out in uniform on the field at the same time, and there are 11 guys when the Patriots trot out there & 11 guys when the Raiders go out there too, but the quality obviously isn’t the same. The Bengals have drafted poorly & when you don’t go out and spend on free agents, you need to have a high percentage of draft picks that play. Where are the priorities: The Bengals employ 8 scouts (18 is the NFL avg) & 16 salesmen. Making money is the No. 1 priority. Winning second

Marvin needs to hire a spy to watch what the other teams are doing than maybe we can go undefeated like New England, Nothing happened to them when they were doing it all these years. Also Chad needs to stop promoting himself and play some football if he wants to be an entertainer he needs to go into acting. Hopefully Henry will show he wants to be on the team and replace OchoCinco

Who cares about a 2-6 team who is always great on paper but almost never good when it counts. But don’t worry Bungals fans… only another 10 years until you get another shot at the playoffs… And the Steelers will be playing for ring #7 or 8 by then… It is the ORGANIZATION that wins… not the players… players leave, we win, players get hurt, we win, coaches leave, we win… until you all realize this fact, you will always be cheering for a bunch of great players who are never a good team

The Bengals need to put together a running game, big plays on D, and solid special teams play. They have done all three this year, but rarely on the same day.

Browns posters: Don’t compare the 4 Browns’ “championships” with the modern Super Bowl. If you want to push the point, I’d like to sell you a rat while calling it a “mink”.

Are there really Browns fans on here trashing Bengals fans for not wearing fan gear & not filling stadiums?! Did they not see the Pittsburgh game? And that’s when we were already 2/5. I can’t tell you the last time I saw a Browns jersey anywhere in the surrounding community. Gimme a break. Fair weather fans come with every team. The Bengals still have all our support & we will continue to cheer them on. Besides, if they keep doing badly, the rest of us might have a shot at season tix next yr.

I find it quite funny that people in the Queen City bail out on the Bengals as soon as they are hitting a rough spot. I am a fan and have been since 88 and yes it is hard to watch them go through another tough season, Marvin needs to get the team under control both on and off the field, but to fire him? This tells me that “Benglas fans,” have no idea what they are talking about. It takes time to build a dynasty look at New England and Indianapolis it didnt happen over night.

I don’t think Chad wants to be here. He is a self promoter and he needs a bigger media market in order to do his promoting more effectively. Everyone has always said how nice he is, and what a credit he is to the game. Yeah right. He’s another T.O. waiting to happen. He’s lucky he hasn’t been hurt more seriously. Defensive backs are going to tee off on him. Maybe the next time we’ll all get lucky and they’ll wire his mouth shut.

People refuse to say anything bad about Palmer. He has been off. The only difference from this year and years before is the offense is not puttin up the huge amount of points they use to score. Defense is playing about the same.

Bengals Chuck: what team are you watching? Our offensive line is in shambles: Willie (former pro-bowler) is hurt; Levi Jones is a shell of what he was just two years ago, Steinbach is gone, Braham is gone. Our linebackers Simmons, Pollack and Thurman are all gone. Our secondary except for Deltha - Madieu was hurt - is different. I mean, c’mon! (Don’t let the facts get in the way of an argument). 2005? For the most part, this is the same team that went 11-5 2 years ago. A few players are different, but the core is identical. How is it Mike Brown’s fault that Chad drops a TD pass in the 4th quarter that would have put them up by 2 scores. yea, maybe they still lose, but it’s a different game. It’s not Mike Brown. It’s the players.

Being a Bills fan, I just wanted to express my concern and well-wishes for Chad Johnson. I was one of the unlucky fans at the game when Kevin Everett was injured, so the last thing I ever want to see is another player being taken off the field on a stretcher. It was good to see him moving and GREAT to hear he is going to be fine. The hit by Whitner was hard, but legal, and it has also been reported the two of them were “jawing” with each other before the play. Thanks for a good game, good luck!

It is quite simple. The Bengals do need work. They need to get healthy, they need to stay out of trouble and they need a new defensive coordinator. Defense has been terrible for years. They need to get C. Henry back to take some of the focus off Chad and TJ. Palmer is a good quarterback but like any other, if he does not have the wide receivers every game, he will look mediocre. Marvin needs to make good decisions. 4th and 1 on the two and you kick a field goal. Team has a confidence problem????

Mike W: Excellent analysis of 5-year contracts going to over-the-hill Rudi & Willie. Never was a big Rudi fan — seems to run directly to the nearest pile of people and jumps in. Buffalo’s opponent’s averaging over TWELVE YARDS a carry and Watson hardly got the ball - Bratkowski error. He needs to go. I still love the Bengals even if they lose as it means I can now get scalper tix to a game for below face value. Still love going to the game and supporting them whether they win/lose.

Let’s face it, as down as the Bengals and their fans may be right now, it could be worse: we could be living in Cleveland rooting for the Browns. Heck, the Browns may be .500 this year and their fans act like they’re Super Bowl bound.

By Mike W

The Browns only championships were before the Bengals were in existence, in 1964. The Bengals were in two Super Bowls in an 8 year stretch. The Browns have NEVER been to the Super Bowl. I think the NFL were wearing leather helmets the last time the Browns (or any other Cleveland team!) won a championship.

When was the last time the Bengals had grit and hard-nosed determination? I don’t recall it . . not even during the SB seasons. They won with finesse and lost to less-talented teams. Pittsburgh would be my perfect example of a grit team: They lose and add personnel, yet remains winners. Its not just about talent — Cincy has had plenty of talent and they still play like wimps. Its a culture of failure that turns winners into losers.

I too am a Bengals fan and I am so dissapointed in our team. We showed promise at the season opener against Baltimore and we wasted it away. Yeah Chad has had a rough year as has Rudi and our defense is lacking, well, everywhere, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need our support. If we were in a winning season you guys would be all over it! If you are a “true” fan you’d realize this……

The Bengals need a task master as a head coach. Mike Brown was right the first time: the team needs a guy like Tom Coughlin instead of a “fatherly-type” in Marvin. The talent level is poor, no doubt, particularly on the defense and the offensive line got real old, real fast! But MANY Bengals don’t approach their jobs like professionals. Forrest Gregg, where are you!!

As long as Mike Brown runs the Bengals, they will be losers. He gave 5-year extensions to Rudi Johnson and 35-year-old Willie Anderson while letting a much younger and more versatile Eric Steinbach walk. They have a hard salary cap, yet overpay ($8.7 Justin Smith). Mike Brown doesn’t know what he is doing. Marvin isn’t a good coach, but the talent-level on the Bengals is poor. And they are not just a player or two away from being good. Cincy=back to Loserville!

People need to stop calling everyone fair weather fans because they critize this team. The only way any change happens is if Mike Brown is hit with his pocket book. If you still pay money to see this product you are not a true fan, you are oblivious and part of the problem. You need to look no further to Cleveland to see that being a “true” fan doesn’t work. My points to improve the Bengals: 1) Change the defensive scheme. The team needs to look @ personell strengths. 2) Get healthy. The team is banged up with no depth. 3) Improve the lineman on both sides of the ball. Big Willie and Levi are getting old and banged up. Need to draft some big, young lineman. 4)Build depth in the linebacker core. Put Geathers in th Linebacker core. 5) Pick up a defensive leader in Free agency. There is no leadership on defense or special teams. these are some

How soon we forget that the Bengal’s defense wasn’t that bad a couple of seasons ago when we made the playoffs. Since then, we’ve had injuries (like with David Pollock and the other, less severe ones), a suspension (Odell Thurman), and numerous other issues that no one could’ve predicted. Our offense is still producing (and we DON’T NEED TO TRADE CHAD!), but until we get a solid, performing defense, all is lost. If there’s any “bright side,” at least we’ll get a top 10 draft pick next year!

I read these posts and listen to the talk shows. I hear people say they are true fans and some are, but some need a reality check. We know the team is not going any where this year, as much as that hurts me to say. We don’t need to fire Marvin and Mike Brown is not going to relinquish control of the team to a GM. When Marvin came to Cincy he was the face of the team. Mike B. let Marvn control. or at least give the illusion of control. continued in next post

The truth is this team is terrible and there is no chance for improvement as things are now. The defense is the same old lousy defense we have seen for years, nothing has changed. Replace all the defensive backs. Can’t cover and can’t tackle.Next, replace the linebackers. Can’t pursue.Better coaching on the D-Line will help.Offense- receivers-ok-need better tight ends. Running back Watson- good performer. Rudy- jury still out on his comeback- maybe worth keeping, maybe not.Quarterback-ok.Work on defense with new personel. Keep and refine offense-better play calls at the right time will help. Until then, Bengals will be a cheesy little flea market team ala Coslet/LeBeau era.

This team could easily be 5-3, if they had a defense. The biggest problem I have with Marvin Lewis is that he came into Cincy as one of the greatest defensive coordinators in football, the mastermind behind the Baltimore Ravens’ swamping D, and he has had over four years to turn this team around. Today’s defense is no better than the one he inherited. We won because our offense improved. The missed tackles, off-field arrests, all of this piles up.

The Ben-GALS are back indeed. This lackluster bunch has no heart! Marvin Lewis, the defensive minded guru hasn’t improved the defense one iota since he’s been here. The year we went to the payoffs, we got every bounce and deflection to go our way.

I will not however blame him for grown men not having a certain amount of pride and discipline with the regards to the frequent off the field struggles with law enforcement.

The media tries to blame Chad for everything as Palmer is having a bad year

Get healthy and get draft picks who stay healthy (and out of jail). The front seven needs completely revamped except for Justin and Geathers. The teams that are successful right now are healthy and their HIGH draft picks are making an impact. Braylon, Kellen, and Joe Thomas in Cleveland vs Pollack, Thurman, Henry, Perry, Irons, Brooks, etc. in Cincy. Bad personnel decisions combined with bad luck and poor leadership lead to this. 2-14 and draft D-tackles is what we need now.

Going into this season, the Bengals did absolutely nothing to improve their horrible defense from last year. The only 2 guys that they signed were Ed Hartwell and a no name tackle. Both guys had been hurt for 2 years straight and what happened, they were both cut before the season started. Marvin lewis says the team needs to build through the draft, but almost half the players he has drafted aren’t on the team anymore, and I love what second round pick Kenny Irons brings to our defense.

This is delicious justice. Cincy is a smarmy town, full of ignorant racists. The funny part is that the idiots who live there think of themselves as a kind of blue blood group. Mikey and Bob Carl Castellini Lindner are the same. Their bottom line is cash, and they count on the lack of intelligence of the Cincy mongrels to fill their coffers while they focus on the bottom line financially and give lip service to the product they place on the field. Enjoy the crap, Cinks. You have earned it!

When I read these comments, I see a bunch of fair weather fans. I used to get mad about stuff like that, but now I realize the world needs a bunch of idiots for balance. Get rid of all your starters, that really sounds like a plan. Send em to our rivals as usual so that they can beat the pants off of us. ( Cory Dillon). Its one thing to support your team and understand they suck and hope for next year, its another to trash em when they are down and hope they get traded. Very fickle.

Its kinda hard NOT to take pleasure in the Bengals’ suffering. You’ve got one blow hard receiver, a team full of thugs, and an incompetent man as the coach. Who WOULD support this?

Who can get excited about multi-million dollar players who get paid whether they win or lose and could care less for the city/team they play for, and are there just to promote themselves first? I enjoy taking a walk on Sundays and enjoying nature, seeing a movie, going out to eat, etc. After Saturday’s college games, I have my football “fix” for the week and certainly don’t need to have the Bengals or the Browns win to give myself a sense of well-being! Pro sports are a sham!

I find it interesting how quick fans are to trash the Bengals. Seems like when they are doing great everyone loves them. Next season they struggle (like a lot of teams have) and now everyone hates them. Sad to see so many band wagon fans. Bottom line is in sports all teams are going to have good seasons and bad seasons. Get over it.

Lewis and his staff need to go The entire D needs to go Chad Johnson needs to go Rudy Johnson needs to go

Since none of that will happen, I will continue to suffer as a lifelong Bengals fan.

HEY FOLKS, I’M GOING TO LET YOU IN ON A LITTLE SECRET. MIKE BROWN DOES’NT GIVE A CRAP ABOUT WHAT GOES ON DOWN ON THE FIELD, AS LONG AS FANS KEEP SHOWING UP AND THOSE $$$$$$ KEEP POURING IN. AND THAT IS FACT !!!

The entire leadership of the Bengals, from Lewis on down, needs to go. Then the entire defense needs to be replaced, including Leon Hall. The defense is absolutely terrible. As a matter of fact, I would lay odds that when we play the Dolphins, who are 0-8, we will lose that game and give them their only win of the year.

Keets! You say to keep Marvin Lewis as the defensive coordinator? Why? He was simply in the right place at the right time when he was with the Ravens and their superbowl winning team. He has proven he knows nothing about defense.

I am finished with Cincinnati sports - the Reds and the Bengals. Its amazing to me that two teams can be so bad for so long. Every year, its the same old tired excuses…no pitching, no defense, no management that can execute a simple game plan, etc.

What is it about this city that accepts mediocrity?

I am only going to watch and care about college sports from now on.

We need a whole new defense. We also should hire Marty Schottenheimer as head coach and keep Marvin as the Defensive coordinator. Belichick had to do the sma ething. He was terrible in his first stint as a head coach and went back to being a defensive coordinnator…

For the Bengal Observer, the only fault that I see with the Brown family is the hiring of Marvin Lewis!

Marvin Lewis’s record with the Bengals should be right at .500 even though he had the benefit of that super easy schedule a couple years ago when he fooled the fans with an 11-5 record. Other than that one, this will be his fourth season without a winning record. It is time for a change!

The Brown family needs to spend more money to have adequate backup players. Mike Brown thinks you spend a couple million on the first string that’s it. Well injuries happen and the investment in the bench is very sad. The Bengals have always not had enough depth. That is this team’s achille’s heel.

Chuck has to go along with his terrible and ineffective schemes. The linebacker position needs to be addressed either through the draft or free agency (Adalius Thomases not Lamar Marshalls and Ed Hartwells). They need to seriously consider putting Rudi out to pasture. He looks like Jamal Lewis did his last couple of years in Baltimore - hesitant, slow, and worn down. They need to invest in an indoor practice facility in order to attract quality free agents.

Mike Brown has to open up his wallet and get some quality defensive players. As we all well know, the Bengals make terrible choices when it comes to draft picks ie… Leon Hall. Get rid of Marvin Lewis and his staff. He has lost the respect of this team. He can do no better than he has achieved. Bring in a seasoned disciplinarian as coach ie… Marty Schottenheimer. A proven winner, even though his playoff success is not very good. He will get the Bengals in position to succeed. Dan

David says to go 2-14 and get some high draft picks. Well this team has had some of the worst drafts ever so what good will that do? sure draft Akkli Smith, Kajana Carter, etc…

Why all the fuss? Cincinnati fans are very familiar with terrible football. And there is no relief in site!

By david

They need to go 2-14 and get several high draft choices including an extra 3rd for the loss of Eric Steinbach. Then in the offseason they should get rid of many defensive players whose contracts are up including Justin Smith for all his $8.6 million and bring in many new players. Concentrate both in the draft and free agency on the front 7 only bringing in tough players who can TACKLE and have SPEED.Then upgrade the secondary toward better tackling as well. The O-line also needs additional depth.

i would have to say fire chuck…get another defensive cordinator who knows what he is doing instead of fat chuck sitting on the sideline eating a ding dong…well we suck this year so we are going to get a good draft pick so we have to draft defense…we blitz nobody so they have all day to pick apart our secondary so we also need to blitz…but i also think they need to learn to wrap up not just dive at there legs or try to strip the ball every play…if i was marvin i’d be screaming everygame

They couldn’t win even if it was flag football. The defense is afraid to put their arms around someone and tackle. They just bump into them and hope they fall. Did you see how many players just stand around. They do not even run off the field between plays, their lazy. Carson said it all, their not a very good team. Marvin has lost control, time for a big change.
