Chad Johnson threatening to sit out '08 season if not traded

> Comment on this below

Staff Writer

Sunday, February 03, 2008

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson is threatening to sit out the 2008 season if he isn't traded.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Johnson's claim on Sunday. Mortensen also quoted an unnamed source that said Johnson feels betrayed by head coach Marvin Lewis after Lewis quit speaking to him during the 2007 season.

Extras

Johnson would forfeit his $3 million base salary if he sits out this fall.

Johnson's trade-me tour of sports-talk-radio was in full swing during Super Bowl week in Glendale, Ariz.

Asked on the Jim Rome Show if he was happy with Bengals, who endured a 7-9 season, Johnson made his feelings clear.

"I'm not allowed to say," Johnson said. "I get the blame; the so-called best player. I'm the problem. Someone in-house is spreading this. Maybe they want me to quiet down (and) stop being me. That is not going to happen. I can't function that way. I tried it. It sucked. There was no excitement."

Lewis, who gave his coaching staff the weekend off, couldn't be reached for comment. But he told the Bengals media on Jan. 16: "There will be no trade of Chad Johnson. I'll repeat it again. He'll be a Cincinnati Bengal for quite a while."

Johnson, a four-time Pro Bowler who set a single-season franchise record with 1,440 receiving yards in 2007, is under contract through 2011 after signing a $35.5 million extension in April 2006.

"What Chad is doing (in radio interviews) is expressing his emotions and frustration," Drew Rosenhaus, Johnson's agent, told ESPN.

CHAD JOHNSON SALARY HISTORY

2001   $301,000

2002   $351,250

Why not just trade Chad to someone in our own division and see how much of a payback we get. Getting rid of Chad is not the answer, but Marvin and him sitting down and discussing the issues is what need done and we sure as H@$L haven’t heard that happen. Marvin has no control and I think is losing respect.

All talk, yeah, but all play, just the same. He’s just tired of losing like the rest of the team, just way more outspoken, but does NEED to grow up

Chad’s mouth has been writing checks that the Bengals defense cant pay. When he spouts off about how great he is and how the other team CB sux, it puts unwanted pressure on Cincy. THAT’S why Marv told Chad to STFU. Chad puts his team in position to fall harder that need be. If you cant STFU and be happy playing for $6 mil, maybe he shouldnt be playing at all. Let someone play who deserves it. Chad is a festering sore if he doesnt get attention. Remember him crying after the Steelers whooped him?

Chad Johnson is a lot like Barak Obama. A whole bunch of hype, speculation and build up to an iconic image of greatness… then when they don’t live up to the overinflation, they are considered failure. Chad had been setting his team up for failure for years. It’s easy to deal with a loss if you haven’t informed the world how great you are and how bad you’re going to beat the other team. Chad, if YOU have to TELL everyone how good you are, maybe you’re the only one buying it? ACTIONS, not WORDS

Bengal fans have been waiting for years for the team to come around. I think the players are getting tired of not advancing to playoffs or the super bowl. There are complainers and fair-weather fans every where and nothing can be done about them.BENGAL PLAYERS need to play like a TEAM and stop SPOUTING off.It shows the organization has no control over the players.SIGN A CONTRACT=A DEAL IS A DEAL!ChadJohnson needs a NEW AGENT BEFORE HE LOOSES HIS JOB.Too much talking is very bad for business.

As with anyone who has a competitive fire, Chad wants to win. This team was a playoff team that went south fast. Players ended up in jail, and it has been said that Marvin has lost control of the team. I think not. Communication is the solution. They should not get rid of one of the top talents in the game, but instead all parties should sit down and work this out. This team has a few holes to fill, but with a fresh approach, they can go forward successfuly. They need to buy into Marv again.

this is ridiculous. keep chad…trade marvin…o wait…i mean fire. chad is just like any other player. he wants to win. can you blame him? he brings excitement and energy to the game and makes sundays even more enjoyable. the bengals would be nowhere without him. he and palmer are one of the best duos in the league. you think for a second TJ would have caught half the passes he did if chad didnt draw double coverage all the time? pleeeeease. chads the man and i hope he doesnt leave.

I really feel cincy should try to trade Ocho stinko for a decent defensive player…We all know thats where the biggest problem on the team is…Make houshurmama ur hands down #1 which he has earned..Housh has really earned it also being so classy with such a loud mouth on the opposite side..Sending Chad down the road would be best for the team so they can move foward..Im so sick of loud mouth players ruining the game…Beef the D because nothings worse then scoring 40+ points and losing…

I hope the hell Oak dont get him.We need players who dont distract the team.Moss went down the road dont bring another me player in.If Ocho Stinko ends up in Oak thats Al Davis screwing the team up.If Al Davis really Does fire Kiffen im going from backing his decisions to hoping he dies.Hand the keys to the crapper over to Kiffen we looked like an NFL team this past season.Working with the same ** players…I went from looking foward to next season to puking in the toilet…..

Chad is a f* baby. He disappears in the big games. H*, he disappears in the games he says he’ll dominate. This tirade is all because he’s being shown up by a teamate who was a 7th round pick vs. Chad’s 2nd round status. Housh always played second fiddle to Chad, but the simple difference in the two players is Housh is determined to be the best football player while Chad, is focused on being a celebrity…end of discussion. just not the end of DISGUST!!

I think Chad is a great player but he has an attitude problem and i think he should get traded if he wants to. I think he should go to the panthers him and steve woulf be a great one-two match up. they’ve played together in college and they would get along and the panthers would be a great team if that happend soo i say have the panthers trade some draft picks. I Love the Bengals and Chad Johnson. I hope he does stay and actually gets back to his old self. Marvin is not your daddy. Chad stop your whinning. Don’t most people realize he is only crying becaue he didn’t get the outrageous STATS he told everyone he would get. He needs to act like a MAN instead of another BABY who just couldn’t get things his way ( T.O , Randy Moss). Has it worked out for the 49ers,Eagles, or Okland. ( Minnesota has Adrian Peterson any team would have turned it around with this guy). Keep him Cinci don’t be like the teams mentioned here.

I say let Chad set out. He won’t get his 3 millon dollars & fine him the maximum amount of money the NFL will allow. If you wan’t to hurt him take away his money. Then when he does let him ride the bench for the year see how hw likes that. Make him grow up Cincinnati don’t give in to him Your have to make a stand sometime.

I almost forgot. Lewis has been there 4 years & they still havn’t got a competive defense. So much for him being a defensive guru.

I find it funny that no one on here is questioning why so many talented players continually want to leave Cincinnati. From Pickens to Dillon, Johnson, etc., the exodus of talent is an indictment of the lack of leadership and style of the organization. The “team” has no understanding of what that word means. Discipline and self-sacrifice are the fundamentals to building winning traditions. Unfortunately those are 2 terms unfamiliar to this organization…GO BROWNS!!!

Chad Johnson is a great reciever, a key player to our offense, without him TJ and the others wouldn’t be wide open. Teams usually double up on CJ. I’d hate to see him go, but I’d hate to see him stay and whine too. I don’t understand why someone who makes millions to play football can whine so much. I’m a police officer and risk my life everyday for roughly 35k a year. Even had to work free as auxillary for couple years to get experience to make my way full time. Stop whinning CJ!

It is very obvious to me why Chad wants out of Nati. He doesn’t drink to excess then drive, he doesn’t beat his women, and he doesn’t smoke crack, Maybe Chad realizes that most of the players in Nati are losers and keep themselves ineligible most of the season (AKA Thurman and Henry). If Marvin would grow some nads and do something about these habitual criminals employed on the Bengals, Chad would not be anxious to leave. Marvin should trade him for Pacman Jones..thats his style!

Hey If we lose Chad o well Cincy can get defensive players for a trade, + Odell Thurman has been cleared 4 workouts, wonder what that means. Ive been a Bengals fan since they came into existance, and Ive stuck with them thru thick and thin, sorry to say the guys making millions of dollars dont. Let Chad set and take a job at a factory somewhere, next year youll be a different player to know your so blessed to play a game for a living and make millions doing it. Chad is one helluva player. If he wants to be traded then he needs to be, if not he won’t have much to offer the Bengals. Everyone expects you to keep your mouth shut but I disagree, he has a right to express he doesnt want to play for Bengals anymore. What makes any of you so special to say otherwise. Everyone deserves to be where they wanna be, and if they are not let them go so they can be happy. LEAVE CHAD ALONE, he can whine all he wants.

The transformation is now complete. Chad has turned into TO a few years ago. Next thing you will see is Chad doing situps in his driveway. Look…CJ has all the talent in the world. He puts up numbers. But he is not a clutch reciever, and the lack of team continuity is what has held this team back. We have some depth at receiver. I say have a seat Chad. You’ll get no more dough from the fans. Maybe you can sit out till…say….2011? For now, take off the stripes.

Great Move By Chad. Marvin put his foot is his mouth with that ridiculous statement. Chad is the most electrifying player in the NFL. People pay money just to see him. Hate him or love him, he is hands down one of the top 4 Receivers. He doesn’t want to deal with crap that the Bungels do. Marvin has got no one since he became coach. Their talent prospecting sucks. Any good player should want to be traded. 8-8 ain’t so great. I’m surprised TJ and Carson haven’t said anything yet.

First off, Chad IS a great player and ANY team would love to sign him away from the Bengals. His absence would be a blow to the Bengals. As with so many players before him, Chad is a pro bowl caliber player who gets upset to see his team miss the playoffs again. What the Bengals need is MORE players who care like that, not less. I say, let Bengals management patch things up with Chad, retain the team’s strengths, work on shoring up the weak spots, and see if they can return to post season

The Bills had a situation last season where the starting qb was replaced by the rookie qb. Now the starting qb wants to be traded, but said he is willing to play next year-the last year on his contract-if the bills don’t want to trade him. To me, that shows some class. The Pats won’t take CJ-they don’t need him and won’t put up with his attitude or antics. The bengals need to make him sit a year instead of always letting him have his way!

I’m a Bengals season ticket holder. Chad is a good person off the field. However, he has some Kahunas to say only (2) people had his back in the Bengal’s organization. What about the other 10 players that played with you on offense “Ocho-Cinco”? What about your fans… wait let me rephrase that. What about your “used-to-be” fans in the Cincinnati, Kentucky, Indiana, Dayton, Columbus areas? What a “CLASS-LESS” way to go out “Ocho-T.O”. I thought you were better than that.

this is crazy, all of the comments on this are from 90% non-bengal fans, who don’t know what they are talking about or they are fairweather fans!!! I am a die hard bengals fan, I love Chad bet we could do without him. I say just trade him, for like Dallas Clark… or the first pick frome miami… can you see it we are already getting better. Good luck CJ wherever you end up I will still root for you dawg!

CHAD IS A PRIMADONNA THAT WANTS THE SPOTLITE ON HIMSELF ALL THE TIME. TJ ONCE SAID HE IS THE BEST ON THE BENGALS AND THAT HE WILL PROVE IT. HE HAS AND CHAD SEE’S THAT, AND KNOWS HE IS SECOND IN COMMING SEASONS CHAD WANTS OUT RATHER THAN SUCK HIND T*T. IF HE WANTS TO SIT LET HIM. HIS DISRUPTIONS ARE NOT NEEDED. WE ARE NOT FAR FROM A TOP TEAM AND I THINK MARVIN WANTS THAT. IT IS HARD TO WORK WITH BABY CRYING IN YOUR EAR. GROW UP CHAD!!!

I love Chad and I love my bengals. Yes I think some new coaches are needed for both the offense and defense, but I do not think Marvin is one of them. I love the exceitment that Palmer, and Chad bring to the game, and I even love Chad’s antics on the field, and so do the fans from what I see at the games. I have been a bengals fan for over 40 years and will continue to be one and give them my support! Without them, what would people have to gripe about? :o)

It’s not that he’s a cancer, I don’t think he is. He just needs to celebrate when the TEAM has accomplished something not just when he scores and the team is 2-4. His supposed ‘passion’ for the game excuse when he gets in his quarterbacks and coaches face on the sidelines has worn thin. Catch the ball or shut up. They trade him now while he is still worth something at 30, and we’re all happy, and good luck elsewhere supporting your 6 kids and 3 baby mamas…

Let him sit or trade him — no loss. Get rid of Marvin too! Get somebody who wants to play for half the money. Marvin is supposed to be a defensive specialist — Bengals have no defense — only criminals! Clean house and start from scratch. Couldn’t be much worse.

I said before “Chad thinks he is TO, but he is no TO. Carson thinks he’s Peyton, but he is no Peyton” Send Chad to the Patriots and Palmer back to the left coast.

I feel where Chad is coming from. When you got most of the team against you and lost games being blamed on you I’d be P.O. to. Chad is one player on a team of many. Does he play defense? Is he the head coach? Does he play special teams? Nope, nope and nope. He a reciever, and one of the leagues best and no one can argue that. So how can you blame a losing season on one player? Cause he talks trash and flashy? You can’t disrupt a team who’s concentrating on thier jobs & not chad. right? GO C.J.!

You all need to shut up about Chad. He is a awesome wide receciver and deserves alot of credit. I think he plays his position very well. People just hate on him because he is who he is and that’s the bottom line. Very out spoken and he can get a little wild, but that’s what I like about him the most. Chad is his own person and says what he feels is right. I agree never bite your tongue and speak from your heart. No matter where Chad plays next season I will always remain a fan and hope the best.

TJ has been the #1 receiver on this team for the last 2 years and with Henry doing the right things off the field, I say get all you can for Chad. I think we could get a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him.

The Chad Johnson SOAP OPERA is the only thing exciting about Bengal football. If I were Marvin Lewis & ownership, I’d never let him leave.

I would make Chad Johnson sit on the bench with no pay! NO PLAY-NO PAY!

Two A(o)s if there every were - Johnson and his agent. They deserve each other. The best part is the problem belongs to the Newport Beagles. Go Browns!

Is he related to TO, Takeo Spikes, or Corey Dillon? I Gotta wonder. I say trade him. We can get several good draft picks for a poison player; he will destroy the team if we dont get rid of him. The Bengals need team players, not a bunch of prissy schoolgirl prima donnas.

You’ve gone too far Chad. You’ve lost the support of the fans. I always supported you until now. You let one rumor shape your view of the entire city and organization. Now you’re being a whiny little b.. Well, let’s just say, there’s no crying in football. I used to think you were somewhat intelligent, but any reciever ASKING to leave Carson Palmer in the prime of his career must be the dumbest a*s on the planet. Here’s hoping you land in Oakland. Cheers!

The bengals need to trade Chad Johnson as soon as they can. He is only concerned with himself. If the bengals really need a clutch catch they go to TJ, because Chad will normally drop those passes or get kangaroo arms when he knows he is going to get hit. He has become a huge distraction to this team. The Bengals have not won with Chad so trade him for some draft picks and cut your loses. I for one am tired of his crybaby attitude in the media and most importantly on the sidelines.

Chad keeps complaining about how he is getting blamed for the season, but it seems to me the only person I am hearing that from is CHAD! ESPN ran that story for about a week, then said that it wasn’t entirely accurate, but Chad keeps brining it up. I think the Bengals should stick to their guns on this one, not trade him, and if he wants to sit, fine. And if he wants to sit out 2009, fine again. I’m sick of these players not feeling like they need to live up to their contract.

Gotta admit I was wrong! In my mind I always thought Dennis Rodman was the most obnoxious “ME-ME-ME” athlete in any team sport. I want to revise my previous opinion and openly declare that Chad is the Super Bowl “Champ” in divisiveness — or I should say “Chump”! Sure hope he saved some of his grossly overpaid salary in a “rainy day fund” because his football future is now behind him! Sure wish I could buy him for what he’s worth and sell him for what he thinks he’s worth! Chad, you’re an idiot!

I’m sorry but the Patriots are more classy of a team to accept Chad Johnson’s childish behavior. The coach (and owner) there would let him go immediately once his attitude became unrespectable towards the team. I am surprised we Bengal fans have put up with this overpaid obnoxious loudmouth this long. True, good player if his head wasn’t so swelled up from all the money stolen away from fans who come see the games.

Here Chad - have a tissue and take a seat! Sit on the bench and cry for all we care. We’re sick of your BooHooing. Maybe the whole team should quit talking to you. All mouth and nothing to back it up. Hey Chad..guess what?… You are NOT God’s gift to football!!!

Get rid of the selfish, me first - me only, wannabe. When was the last time he made a catch that ment anything? He usually drops passes or doesn’t even try to catch them when the money is on the line? Right or Wrong????? You all know I’m right…..
