Good luck getting value for Chad now

Comment: Do you agree with our columnist's assessment?

By Sean McClelland

Staff Writer

Thursday, March 27, 2008

So Chad Johnson wants out of Cincinnati in part because of what some columnist wrote about him?

Sensitive guy. Lucky he doesn't play in New York.

Extras

Seriously, though, the Bengals are in a tough spot if they actually intend to trade Chad. No way they'll get fair market value if it appears they are up against the wall.

And dream on if you think you're getting a first-round draft choice and a starter for him. The time to trade him was last year, before he went completely off the rails and started boycotting workouts and talking about playing arena ball. But who could have foreseen this kind of meltdown?

You've got to feel for quarterback Carson Palmer, whose two starting receivers are skipping the voluntary offseason program. Palmer's a class act who just wants to win, and he's surrounded by clowns.

Oh well, not every organization can navigate the NFL waters as smoothly as the Cleveland Browns, whose only real problem at the moment is figuring out what to do with themselves for the first three rounds of the draft; they don't pick until the fourth.

Don't look now, but the Browns might be the favorites in the AFC North when forecasters start pumping out their predictions this summer.

Off last season, the Browns are bound to be the trendy pick. That's the trouble with going 10-6 and missing the playoffs. There's no sneaking up on anybody the next year.

have u people learned nothing at all about football!!(rhetorical question, Dawgs). Lance Briggs and Michael Strahan were both going to sit out or retire before playing for their respected teams. where did they both end up(Strahan had a pretty tight grip on the super bowl trophy, didn’t he?). as far as the upstart “CLOWNS”, u losers couldn’t even beat the sorry Bengals TO GO TO THE PLAYOFFS!!! PLEASE

Let that cancer go,his antics are just to much, besides he dropped more balls than I can count, obviously not a team player, just a Chad player look at me,look at me,can anyone see my gold teeth. What a distraction, unload all that HYPE!

Chad’s agent & all those of his type are a CANCER to the game,& to all of professional sports as a whole.Speaking as someone who would like to remain a sports fan,I wish that something could be done to eliminate all this garbage. If I have to read any more about TO, or A Rod,or even Ocho whino not being “properly compensated” for their services, I think I’m gonna be sick. I make about $30K a year. How am I supposed to relate to an athlete who thinks his multi-million contract is too little???

By Jeff Jeffries

March 29, 2008 1:53 PM | Link to this

Some blame must be put on his agent. If the objective is:get traded to another team & negotiate a new contract, there is a way to go about that.It is accomplished by elevating your trade value to a point where it becomes a profitable venture for both you & the club currently holding you under contract.Chad’s agent however, somehow thinks that reciprocity is not a necessary part of the process. So, instead of generating a win-win scenario,he has quickly turned it into a lose-lose one for all involved

Andrew: you stupid Hater! You need to look up the average rookie WR(“college wideouts”) reception numbers. Then look up the soph/2nd year averages. And so on, etc. Any of them at 1400 per? Heck no, that’s why you deal with Chad’s tantrum now, bring him back into the fold later after your draft deals for defense and competitors cut-FA signings. He’ll be on the right page earning you and everybody else 1400 in the fantasy leagues. Learn some football… Now, that being said - nice trade, Mike…

“Sean, Sean, Sean…” I feel Tom Cruise wrote this article. Stick to baseball, you know a little about that, I think. TJ has never gone to workouts since his spot has been secure—so he’s not a “clown”. The Bengals have allowed it this long, so why make a big deal about it? Chad “clowning” has to do with his being initially upset at Paul Daughtery, then at some loudmouth(s) in the organization who keeps(kept) floating trade rumors—partly their job, partly Hateration. Chad’s worth it! 1400 yds?

Hey VaderdawgNY this is supposed to be a post about the columnist’s assessment, right? Chad Johnson is ONE PLAYER, not the team. He is known to be a loudmouth, no one really pays attention. Anyway Grandpa and Grandma tell about how the Brown’s used to be in Championship games before Paul Brown was kicked out of Cleveland and started the team in Cincinnati…IN 1967! The Brown’s have been successfully? navigating the NFL before that and must have missed the Bengals two Superbowl appearances.

Completely out of perspective here. Sean, are you even aware that T.J. Houshmandzadeh skipped voluntaries last year also? All he got for it was the best season of his career, his first Pro Bowl, and the league co-lead in receptions. I’d stay with my own trainer again too after a year like that. Don’t get me started on the massive Browns nutswing that’s already in midseason form. ozz has it right when he posted “call Dan snyder” above me. Ask HIM how well mortgaging the future pays off.

When is the last time the Bungles have ever won a championship (ie: superbowl in todays terms). Oh thats right never! And don’t the Bungles have one of the worst win loss records over the past 20 years.

The Browns suck!
Chad Johnson can not be traded. The team is better off letting him sit out than taking an 8.03 million dollar cap hit. Thats money they’ve already spent. The really bad part is Chad knows he’s going nowhere he understands he’s not going to get his way and he is throwing a huge fit. Like a baby. And the ones who suffer are his teammates.

Stallworth has never had a 1000-yard season, Rogers has never played a full season, Derek Anderson had a fluke season, and Leigh Bodden is a Lion, yeah, i’d say the Browns navigated the waters pretty smoothly……Bengals own the Battle of Ohio

I would trade him. One person does not make a team. Any college wide receiver can do what this person thinks is lofty. I don’t think he is the best receiver oh his team. That Whose YA MOMMA dude is a lot better than this cry baby. The quarterback does not throw to this other guy because Chadberry will pout and cry on the sidelines like he did on Nat’l TV. The QB runs the offense not the Wide Out. How about setting a scale for dropped balls. Take away $1000.00 dollars for every dropped ball. Ouch

There is no way to get back what was invested on CJ. He is what he is because the Bengals laid the foundation for his actions. The first time he acted foolish and strived to have the spotlight on “Chad”, the coaching staff should have put a stop to it then and there. As long as Marvin stands on the sidelines smiling and clapping his hands instead of benching idiots, to cost them playing time and payroll incentives, he will continue to coach losing teams!

Its good to hear that the Brown’s might be finally navigating the NFL waters with some success since they have been floundering without a Superbowl appearance for over 40 years! Paying too much for everyone elses rejects as the Brown’s have done is not a successful plan (Can you say Washington Redskins?) Neither is giving too much press to a single player like Chad Johnson who is ignored by anyone who constantly hears him chatter like a magpie. Chad’s importance is over emphasized.

Its good to hear that the Brown’s might finally be successfully navigating the NFL waters since they have been floundering without a Superbowl appearance for over 40 years! The Brown’s have paid way too much for everyone else’s players and not developed their own and you had better believe if they could get Chad Johnson they would add that to their take. Washington has been spending money on free agents for years and look what it has got them!

Yes, they should sit Chad. No player is larger than the team. There is an alternative though. Take lito and reggie brown for CHAD and a 3rd or fourth round pick.

Why don’t the Bengals trade Chad Johnson for Lito Sheppard. They may lose a little offence but they strengthen their defense which was not good last year. Just think, next season the Eagles play the Bengals and the big story could be how Chad Johnson does against Lito Sheppard. Anyway, as an Eagles fan the best thing you can do is get rid of him. You would think after T.O. Everyone would have figured that out by now.

I am a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan with a fair trade proposal involving the Bengals and Cowboys. The Boys’ will send their 2nd round pick, LB Bobby Carpenter and SS Roy Williams for Chad Johnson. Bobby Carpenter is more suited to play the 4-3 than the 3-4. Roy Williams would be playing for Mike Zimmer who he is familiar with from his days as D-coordinator in Dallas. This is of course with Chad knowing he will be the #2 receiver in Dallas next to TO. I think it is a win-win situation for both.

Sean, Thanks for the insight. It’s important for true Browns fans to keep track of developments within divisional opponents’ organizations…”know thy enemy.” The Chad situation in Cinci has no downside for the Browns. If Chad is dealt, a divisional rival is significantly diminished. If he is kept, his preformance will suffer beacuse his heart will not be in the game, and he will be a cancer within the Cinci locker room. And it also makes for great entertainment for Browns fans !!

Could someone please cite the source that says TJ is unhappy in Cincy??? He skipped VOLUNTARY workouts to work one on one with his trainer in LA and to be with his children. As he did last year. He also works with Carson Palmer during the offseason in LA. Find this info on Bengals.com. I’m getting very tired of people grouping him with Chad Johnson because he missed the workouts.

All these people writing about Chad honoring his contract. Why should the players have to completely honor their contract when the team doesn’t? If the team didn’t want Chad all they have to do is waive him and he is gone without compensation without any regard to “honoring his contract”. The team should try to work this out with Chad honorably!

By chuck

I know its hard to due, But teams should let players sit if they don t want to play, if they don t show up and not want to play, do nt pay them and let them sit and cost them time and money til they show up, in the long run if all teams did this, after awhile players would know they would have to honor there contracts, and maybe they would not demand suchs long term deals if they knew they could not get out of them

By Andy Lucas

March 27, 2008 12:59 PM | Link to this

Business is Business.. Let him sit…Bottom Line. Bengals are not going to win a Super Bowl because of him, they need Carson, and a strong defense. Look at the Giants. So…Chad just rot on the sideline…Like Al Davis made Marcus Allen do.

chad is fool who knowns he cannot be traded because of the cap i wish they could trade him. he is a me first person who says he team first but only wants whats best for him.he drops easy passes scare to go across the middle drops down as soon he catches ball runs out of bounds.if he wasnt touch in the head he would know he not top ten and just a loud mouth clown.

By Gary Matney

March 27, 2008 12:50 PM | Link to this

The Bengals should make him honor his contract and if he gets out of line suspend him without pay. I don’t see how players can get away with signing a contract then whining their way out of it because them team is not doing good. Let him ruin the goodwill he established and let people view him for the selfish player he is.
