Palmer surprised by Browns' prime-time schedule

COMMENT: Do the Bengals deserve more prime-time exposure?

MORE: Beat writer Chick Ludwig blogs about the Bengals

CINCINNATI — Of course, Carson Palmer saw Cleveland's 2008 schedule and noticed that the Browns were awarded a franchise-high five nationally televised games.

The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback was not pleased.

Extras

He wondered out loud what the Browns did to deserve all the prime-time exposure.

"I was as shocked as anybody to see that because they're still a ways away from being a ..."

Palmer's voice tailed off.

"They weren't even in the playoffs," he said today, April 16.

The Browns finished 10-6 in 2007, but lost a wildcard playoff berth to Tennessee (10-6) on the final day of the regular season when the visiting Titans beat the Indianapolis Colts, 16-10. The Colts (13-3) played backup quarterback Jim Sorgi, resting many of their starters.

At any rate, the Browns are the newest darlings of the NFL, just like the Bengals were after their 2005 playoff season.

"I think it's a lot of hype early," Palmer said. "Just like every year, there's hype around one or two teams early. It'll fizzle out once they start playing games."

Theyre just opponents in 2 other teams schedules & thats still only 1 monday night game @ home. Then they get the inconvience of a thu night game & an early-in-the-yr Sun nt game against a fierce rival that will garner a lot of viewers. The NFL is about $$$. Exciting=$$$

Im trying to think of a good offseason move that the bengals have made, can anyone help? oh , i know Landon Johnson, Alex Stepanovich, Madieu Williams, and Justin Smith. seems kind of funny that anyone worth a damn is packing there bags and leaving, and why do you think that is bengals fans? the team is heading in the wrong direction yet again and the veterans of that team know it. chad is the next one out the door and then the offense is hosed. i think palmer will be spending alot of time cryin

Carson is just a little jealous and us true Dawg fans feel sorry for him. He can whine all he wants but when it comes right down to it lets wait till the end of the year and see who will be talking all this smack. We made the right moves to improve our defense and the offense will continue to thrive. Browns win the division and the Begals finish last only because Carson cant get the Browns off his mind from being in the limelight for a change. GO DAWGS!!!

The Browns have become the NFL’s hype flavor of the month for signing some unproven fat guys in free agency. The Bengals are old news, 2005’s flavor of the month. Neither are deserving of the spotlight.

Also in responce to Jeff talkin about the Bungals loyal fan base?? HUH?? Loyal? Oh thats right. Before the 02 or 03 season when the Bungals finially made the playoffs, how many Browns games was I able to watch on Channel 7 because the Bungals didnt sell out?? HA HA! Nice try. Sounds like a bunch of bandwagon fans to me. Cincy has the biggest bandwagon fans in all of sports. Where did all the U.C fans go?Where are all the Reds fans at? Dont you dare try to say most Cincy fans are loyal.

Oh you Bengals fans, you need to drink a big cup of water and get that salty taste out of your mouth. If im not mistaken you had a week schedule also, and you sucked. Here’s another difference, if DA is garbage like you say then we got a back up, BRADY. haha and you got ???? if ocho cinco is still on your team this year he should send your corners some pepto! Sorry Bungal fans. But due to your player conduct off the field, you were not scheduled for Monday Night Football due to court ordered curfews for half your team. Carson, you have a lot more to worry about than the Browns schedule. A horrible defence, ankle braclets, ocho stinko, and no wide reciever outside of T.J Houshmaytnewgcdirejrfda. Enjoy those 4 wins bungal fans.

How many incredible seasons have the Bengals had in the last ten seasons, Dodd? The 2002 campaign was certainly memorable. 2 wins! Oh, I forgot the Bengals were an expansion team….back in the 60’s. Don’t give me your envious excuse that the Browns were a fluke last year. The Bengals have obviously been a fluke and embarassment since their meaningless establishment. The way I see it, you are one draft pick away from finaly forming Death Row. Enjoy us on TV while you cheer for your pitiful team.

It seems to me that the prime time schedule was the NFL’s choice, not the Browns’ solicitation. Honestly, I can’t think of a better season than the Browns, Bengals and the Steelers all having 10 plus wins so that the division would be decided WITHIN the division. instead of leaving it up to other teams. As for Carson’s comment, I can understand it, but as a die-hard Browns fan(Since 64), and Seattle area resident, I’m thrilled and clearing my schedule to for every one of those prime time games

Wow the Browns have one good year in the last 10 in which they didn’t even make the playoffs, and look at how much respect they want. WOW!!! You all did watch your terribly overrated QB throw like 5 interceptions against us right. The 10 wins were flukes. You maybe should have won 6. Wait till the end of this season. Your pathetic team will garner as much respect as the Dolphins. You are one Jamal Lewis crack deal and one Kellen Winslow motorcycle journey away from the #1 pick brownstains

Carson’s not worrying about the # of primetime games.. he worries about his own team, he just said how anyone would feel.. a team that had a week schedule last year- didn’t make the playoffs and is now in a similar, “darling team” situation that the bengals were in a few years ago. We at least made the playoffs and won the division. We’ll see how this year goes with a new D and an offense that people now have film on.

Pleeeese with all the bitterness Bungles nation. And Carson Palmer should get the equivalent of the NFL Oscar for “Best QB in a supporting role” who forgets to show up each year!He should learn to shut his mouth and try and win football games instead of worrying who’s on the wide screen in prime time more than his team. The NFL is a business and as such they are simply trying to market and sell excitement. So who is more exciting these days…the Browns or the Felons..whoops, I mean Bengals!!!!

If Derek starts to stink up the joint, then they need to put in Brady no doubt. If we’re going to stink it up I’d rather see Brady stinking it upthat way he can get a little practice time in.As for us playing that many monday nites and prime times, good for us.I think we have had what one Monday nite game since like 2003.I believe every team good or bad deserves a chance. So quit whining Bengirls.

While most of you Bengals fans are sensible and maybe 5 primetime games may be a bit much, Why is a Bengal starting QB worried about our schedule. I think they have bigger problems than Cleveland’s schedule. Also, the jerk that is running is mouth about our loyalty can stick it. I have been a life long Browns fan and I wore the team gear during 96-98 just as much as I wear it now, and I will tell you like I tell my wife (a Bengal fan) the only reason the Bengals did not move is n/b would take em

Carson may be one of the best QB’s on the field, but he must have forgotten that the browns were tied for the division lead with 10 wins. How many did cincy have? Some ignorant person commented that anything less than an 11 and 5 season would be a disappointment. The fact is, the AFC North’s schedule this year is brutal! National pundits think the AFC North winner will only have 8 or 9 wins!

Interesting comment by Carson. He seems cocncerned by the fact that the BROWNS will eclipse the bengals. Having lost TWO receivers in the off-season, half of his defense. He should be concerned more in the possibilities of trading for more draft picks and being a leader of his locker room.

There is no “green” in the Cincinnati uniform color scheme, yet Carson’s crying rant would lead you to believe otherwise. In a time where Ohioans needs a ray of hope, the northern (better) half of the state finally has one. While I wouldn’t expect Bengal fans and players to cheer on the Browns, it is a sad showing as to how far the team, dare I say the city, has fallen that they would be against the senior Ohio NFL team. Its a good thing that there is at least Orange in Cincy’s color scheme as it has served to condition the players to their inevitable jump suit in county lock up.

The guys yapping about the two Super Bowls (losses) by the Bengals (the Browns have no SB appearances) are laughably ignorant. The Browns have 5 NFL championships, 9 league championships and the nation’s largest and most rabid fan base. The Bengals have never won any kind of championship. I am old enough to have watched the greatest football player in history, Jim Brown, play every Sunday. Comparing the Bengals to the Browns is like comparing the Indians to the Reds. Don’t bother!

Plus half the Browns’ wins and losses last year were games that were decided in the final few minutes. Plus as fluent as records are each year in the league the only thing the brass in NYC can go off of is the previous season. If the Bengals can get everything situated in house and play the way they are capable of I would love to see the division come down to CIN/CLE and maybe a prime time Browns/Bengals game will be on the schedule in ‘09.

I am a Browns fan living in Cincinnati and I am just glad I won’t have to spend most of my Sunday afternoons at Willie’s in Covington to watch the game. Is five prime time games a lot and possibly too many? I can see that side of the argument, but I am not going to complain. You have to see where this decision is coming from, NYC headquarters and they see a young and exciting team that sent four players to the Pro Bowl who all have been in the league less than five years.

I found myself watching them(Thanks NFL Sunday ticket) more and more last season, and less and less of my beloved Bengals. I agree with the Browns fans that CP should shut -up! The networks can only guess at a team’s record and appeal.Does anyone really think the Bengals are a team on the rise?

Do the Bengals even have a national following?Parts of Columbus and Kentucky don’t count.

They are sort of like the stock market. They’ve made a lot of bad investments in bad character players, didn’t sell them in time and now they are in a sub-prime collapse (not ready for Prime Time).

Wait, I can not remember the last time the Browns have been to the Super Bowl. Oh, that’s right NEVER! Until the Browns can get to a Super Bowl not as caliber team yet and need to prove that they can make into the playoffs year by year. The Bengals are no better getting good for a year and then a huge flop. I see the Browns doing the same thing as the Bengals did after the 05 season just fall apart and can not live up to the hype.

Both teams haven’t made in lead way since what 1990. Last time the Browns did anything was 1989 where they lost 37-21 to Denver. The Bengals have been worse not having anything since 1988 where they finally lost to San Fransisco in the Super Bowl 20-16.

Both teams still need to prove that they can compete and not make a once in a blue moon playoff appearance.

The Browns were the 8th highest scoring team in the NFL last year. They won 10 games and were exciting to watch. They have also been the most active team in free agency - especially signing Stallworth to an already explosive offense. Most fans (including the steelers fans) have been waiting for the Browns to become competitive again -> to renew the rivalry. They deserve a lot more than 5 primetime games after what Model did to them.

As for the “criminals” schtick, can we finally give it a rest? There’s now no one left on that team who has had any significant trouble with the law. Even Odell Thurman, who isn’t officially back yet, only had 2 DUI’s - and i say “only” acknowledging full well that it is inexcusable, but you don’t hear people calling for Jared Allen’s head and he’s had what, 4 or 5? There are plenty of things to knock on the Bengals, bbut they’ve done a good job cleaning up the locker room. Give them credit.

If you listen to Carson’s entire quote, he goes on to say that the Bengals clearly didn’t deserve the national exposure this season based on how they played last year and that they’d have to earn it again like they did in 2005-6. The Browns are a different team and a force to be reckoned with in the North now, but he’s just saying exactly what people said about the Bengals after their 2005 11-5 season: they’ve got a lot of hype, but let’s wait to anoint them Super Bowl contenders.

The Browns were good last year, but not great. This year will be their proving year. They certainly are one of the flavors of the month for the NFL, that’s true, but they have earned it. Carson is a bit whiney lately. The Bengals forgot to show up for many of their games. Probably too much in-fighting. Too bad. The Cincy fans deserve better. Where is Brian Sipe when you need him? What is the Brownies winning % against Carson?..Uhh..not good. Is Romeo on a diet? Clearly the Brown’s franchise is bad, as is the Bengals. Historically, NFL speaking, if we must devolve to competitive comments, the Bengals have two AFC championships, Brownies Zero. Enough said, facts always rule. Regarding the prime time games, who cares? Not sure it is good or bad for the record outcome. I know the players enjoy it and it is fun for the city, but the Brownies and Bungles sell out every game anyway. Prediction, both teams will struggle to go 500 this season. Truth-grace

I am a Browns fan. That being said, I think that 3 Monday night games is a bit much. I do believe that the Browns will be better this year than they were last year. But I also believe that they will only achieve a record of 9-7 or better this season. The schedule is absolutely brutal, and all of the national attention may become a distraction to this young team.

The Bengals on the other hand have once again become the NFL’s comedy relief. The Cincinati Cicadas LOL!

The bungles get enough exposure in the local police lineups. Palmer needs to shut his trap.

What do you guys mean the Browns haven’t done anything? Going 10-6 isn’t doing anything anymore? So what is, 10 straight losing seasons then going 8-8 the next 3?

The browns are a young exciting team. The offense puts points on the board. Is the defense great, no, but they should be respectable.

Someone’s a bit bitter, huh? Sorry your Cincinnati Cicadas show up once every 17 years (one playoff year since 1990 - even the Browns have 2 and they weren’t around for 4 year!), then crawl back in their holes and die. It must be a miserable existence being a Bungle fan.

Enjoy listening to Chad Johnson whine and cry all year long! It brings a smile to my face listening to Bungle fans calling in to 700 WLW all the time complaining about their team. PEW DEY!!!!

Norman, the Brown turds have not done a damn thing and will continue to suck. Palmer is not whining but being factual.I will admit that it will be fun to see the Browns get their AS$es handed to them on national tv many many times this year. The Bengals on their worst day will beat the Browns this year. (your quarterbacks will both suck-my prediction)

As a Browns fan, I can’t say I’m crazy about all of the prime time games. It can be good - if you deliver, or it can be bad if you stink up the place. In some respects, the jury is still out on the team. The Bengals did get some Monday night exposure a few years back coming off a 7-9 season and delivered on a Monday night versus Denver. There are more venues (Sunday night, Thursday night) than there used to be as well. I don’t think its a big deal.

I can’t say the Bengals deserve MORE prime time exposure than the Browns, but only one prime-time game the entire season… and the Browns with five?! This seems like a pretty huge slap for not quite meeting expectations last year. They still have one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and an exciting pair of wide receivers. But, frankly, if this makes the team shape up and play with some heart this year, I won’t complain too much. GO BENGALS!

I am a Bengals fan however; NO; I feel that with all the troubles off the field and little winning on it, they do not deserve the spot light. I am sick of the “It’s all about me” mentality with Johnson and the criminals that play with him. A few years back it was different; they were winning and being a Bengals fan was exciting again. Now it’s back to the same as it was before; no changes to be better and Chad still thinking about himself.
