Ex-Bengals sound off on Chad

COMMENT: Would you trade Chad Johnson or force him to sit out?

By Chick Ludwig

Staff writer

Thursday, April 24, 2008

Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson has demanded a trade, but the Bengals aren't giving in. They rejected the Washington Redskins' offer of a first-round draft choice this year and a third-rounder in 2009 that could turn into a No. 1 pick if Johnson reaches certain performance levels.

Johnson has four years remaining on a six-year, $35.5 million deal he signed in 2006, which included a $10.75 million bonus. His remaining base salaries are $3 million (2008), $4.5 million (2009), $5 million (2010) and $6 million (2011).

Trade him

"If Chad doesn't want to be here, man, let him go. Let him go because the stuff he's saying right now, do you really expect that it's not going to be a distraction to the team? It's going to be a distraction." — David Fulcher, Bengals strong safety (1986-92).

"Trade him and get a pick in the second round. It's not going to get better. I don't think Chad will be that much of a distraction if things are going OK. But if things start going astray, then it could end up becoming more than if you got rid of him to begin with." — Steve Mooshagian, Bengals wide receivers coach, 1999-2002.

Keep him

"I really wouldn't move him. I don't think they have a No. 1. T.J. (Houshmandzadeh) is very good at what he does. Trust me, going into that No. 1 slot is a totally different world when they're keying on you." — Tim McGee, Bengals wide receiver (1986-92, '94-95).

"He's unhappy. That's OK. Then go take it out on the other team. Unleash the beast. You play a little bit better when you're ticked off. Tim Krumrie always had a sour disposition, last time I checked. You're not happy? Deal with it. Maybe that's good for me as an owner." — Solomon Wilcots, Bengals defensive back (1987-90).

Note: The Bengals spurned New Orleans' trade offer of nine picks in 1999 so they could stay at No. 3 and select QB Akili Smith. See Chick Ludwig's blog at DaytonDailyNews.com/ludwig

Dear Chad, I’m maybe your biggest fans so please understand what I’m about to say, I say with LOVE… Stop it!!! Shut-up and play ball… Please! Do it for all the fans like me who enjoy watching you do your thing and cheer for you every week win or lose. And we’ve done enough losing. This is the year when all the pieces come together and we take it all. Wouldn’t it be ashame, if that happen without you being part of it… After all you’ve put into being the best receiver in the league.

Let him sit. His career is over. This is a team sport. Mike keep up the good work! Chad you need to be ashamed of your self! Chad here is one for ya! Join the Army and go to Iraq and see what a real team is! No you lack the discipline, the integrity to be on a real team. You represent the greedy and the glutonous! You remind me of the rich white preacherman that says one thing on Sunday and wears a sheet Monday thru Saturday! Shame on you Chad! Stop acting like an immorral and unjust republican!

I believe we need to trade Chad. It might not happen until June 1 or later so the Bengals can split the $8 million cap hit over two years, but letting Chad sit out won’t make the Bengals a better team. Getting a couple of draft picks, even if they are in 2009, might. Besides, even if he were to play for Cincinnati this season, he would be a cancer in a locker room that seemingly has no leaders. Heck, Bengals.com is reporting that Levi Jones wants traded, although he says he won’t sit out.

Good for Mike Brown &Marvin Lewis for standing firm.Anquan Boldin wants a big contract or he wants to force a trade out of Arizona, gee I wonder who is behind this,oh yeah, its Drew (I need more money Rosentird). The NFL should really support teams against this trend of agents trying to break contracts that they get their clients to sign. When this contract was signed Rosentird praised the Bengals for their generosity and said this was a historic and momentous signing.thnx ochostinko.

This is ridiculous! Who doesn’t get upset with someone at work? The man is mad. If he wants to sit out, let him. Don’t pay him though if he doesn’t want to achieve the goals of the team anymore. He’s not holding victory hostage. Bengals will still be the Bengals. Also, Chad got the city hype more than any other player. Only because of the good things he did is he getting all this negative attention for saying something un-bengal-otic. A few years ago,… (not finished see below)

KEEP HIM,SET HIM ON THE BENCH,and FINE HIM THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF $ THE NFL WILL ALLOW. If U really want to hurt CJ hit him where it hurts his wallet. Fine him everyday so they can get some of that $$ back. I for one am glad to see Mike&Marvin stand their ground on this. If it does’nt stop here where will it end?

If he was my teammate and mouthed off like that, my first inclination would be to beat him up, tell him to shut his mouth and play the game. I get so sick and tired of these crybaby wide receivers. They’re not even the ones who throw the ball. If he hates it here, great, grand him his and wish and trade him to the Super Bowl-bound Dolphins, where he belongs.

How pathetic did Rosenhaus look today begging the Bengals to trade Chad! I don’t know who the bigger baby is….Drew or Chad! Hell yeah Drew wants him traded so he can get a new contract for Chad and put more $ in his pocket too! That guy is the scum of the earth and half the reason why players think they run the owners. I say keep up the good work Mike Brown and let Chad do what he says he will do and sit out! We will lose with or w/o Chad!

MOST OF THE PLAYERS HAVE BECOME TIRED OF HIS METHODS AND SIMPLY WANTS TO BE OUT AS LONG AS HE’S STILL at the helm. Mikey boy will not trade Chad. Lets remember he passed on all 9 of the saints picks for the QB who was gonna take the Bengals to the super bowl….Akili Smith. He let Carl Pickens and Corey Dillon stew for years before they where traded. Chad will be a bengal, he will sit outthru training camp and maybe even a game or two but when his pocket book is empty he will play. After all it is all about the money to Chad and Rosenhaus. New contract and signing bonus!

I think that if he wants to act like a little baby then they should do just what they are and treat him like a baby hell I will buy him a bottle to suck on and like someone else said if he wants to play then he should have to earn his way into a spot and I don’t see how everyone keeps saying he is so great he is scared to go across the middle to catch a ball so he is not great Jerry Rice is great

Looking at all of these posts, one would think CJ was having pacman-like off the field problems. While I’d have to agree that his behavior on the field is/was questionable, he has been a model citizen off of the field. Some of you guys are looping him right in there with Thurman, Henry, and some of the rest of the players always in trouble. While I’d like to see CJ go to the Eagles or somewhere like that, it’s pretty unrealistic to think that that broke franchise will voluntarily absorb the hit.

I would do just as marvin did. Let him be a man of his word. Mr. Brown doesnt like to spend money and we cant afford the cap hit. The other NFL coaches should watch cause this is the stand up leadership the nfl needs to stop crybaby players from running things. OH and if he does come back, he should have to earn a spot by returning kickoffs and getting clobbered in the middle. Maybe it would rid his fear of going across the middle, teach him to run in the open field, and get yds after the catch

I’m reading a lot of ire arimed at Chad, some at Mike Brown (alsways an easy scapegoat) but little regarding Drew Rosenhaus, Chad’s Agent; T.O.’s agent, same pattern, same tactics (similar to another receive as well with the same agent.) It seems to me that Rosenhaus is guilty of interfereing with a legal contract if indeed he is advising ang guiding Chad’s actions. I wonder if the Bengals could bring legal action against Rosenhaus. That would go further than any other action they might take.

It is purely a financial decision to keep Johnson on the team. If the Bengals were to trade him they would take an $8 million dollar salary cap penalty hit. They would then be forced to cut someone else or renegotiate other players’ salaries. I don’t see that happening. The Bengals simply cannot afford to get rid of him right now. My guess is that Marvin Lewis keeps him on the bench unless he changes his attitude.

Frank,

You are out of your mind. Few fans go to Paul Brown Stadium to watch Chad. They go to watch a football TEAM win football games. You say there is no other way for the Bengals organization to sell tickets, I say putting a quality product on the field will sell far more tickets for far longer than Chad ever can/will. Chad is nothing but an out of control ego thinking he makes the Bengals. TRADE HIM!!!!! Even if he takes the field he will be booed from here to Abu Dhabi.

Since the Bengals are in need of a revamped defense. They might as well trade for a defensive player, or some good draft picks. The offense is set, so why not make the move. I wouldn’t want a disgruntaled player on my team. Upgrade the defense, and make the move.

ok. First of all chad makes way to much money to complain about anything! If he doesnt want to play then i say get rid of him. He is great but dont get me wrong the bengals have more to worry about then a little baby who wants to cry about things. Yes henry has been in and out of jail but now we have to get more recievers just to cover the gaps. Somebody will want chad and i would trade him for a first round pick and at least someone to fill holes in other areas. But that is my thought!

Let him go. Don’t let it get personal. Trade him to a non competitive team in the NFC, get an additional pick in the first or second round, apply it to some decent defensive talent and groom the other receivers to catch the stuff your quality quarterback can throw. The Bengals are not that far from being back in the thick of it and now is not the time to have an ego. Chad will not take them to a championship with his attitude problem. Cut him, improve the team, win the division…just do it.

CHAD JOHNSON KEEP IT UP. I LOVE THE ANTICS. CINCY CANT DO IT WITHOUT YOU. THE BENGALS FANS ARE JUST SAYING THEY SHOULD SIT U OUT INSTEAD OF TRADE U BECAUSE THEY THINK U’LL GIVE IN AND GO OUT ON THE FIELD AND DO WHAT U DO. THE ONLY REASON FANS GO TO BENGALS GAMES IS BECAUSE UR THERE DOING THAT AND FOOTBALL FANS LOVE IT. BEING A GREAT FOOTBALL PLAYER REACHING THE END ZONE AND CELEBRATING T.D.’S. WHY THE CHAD JOHNSON DRAMA WILL CONTINUE: Cincinnati (franchise)is not committed to winning; but rather, to filling seats and profitability. The “drama” will continue as it takes the spotlight off the franchise inability to win a chanmpionship. So, does the team win or lose more games with Chad in the equation? Folks, it’s nothing about Chad - IT’S ALL ABOUT THE OWNERSHIP!! (Bet Chad would LOVE to be a Steeler…)

okay first of all i love you chad(nonsexual) but seriously your amking a big deal outta dumb stuff! get over it and play ,your contract is sill valid untill 2011 so quit being a premadonna-dramaqueen. but on the flip side its useless to keep you since your really not helping the team anymore, i mean it took you like 5 games last year for you to even score a TD, and you only scored 8 td’s what up with that? maybe your holding us back from the S.B? and if the truth hurts change it!

J Whoopi must have bumped her/his head ” They should have kept Chris Henry, at least he showed up?” Showed up where, to his court hearings? Are you kidding? Why do you think Chad had so many catches? Because the 3rd wide-out was in jail or visiting his probation officer. Thurman,Henry,Johnson, and anyone else who thinks they are owed millions of dollars because they can run and jump high need to be sent home. Follow the damn rules, make your $$, and retire comfortable. What more can you ask for

Trade him and let’s forget about him. He turned his back on the team, the city and his fans. I was Chad’s biggest fan. I stood up for him around the water cooler. But now he has left a bad taste in my mouth - just like Dillon. I believe everyone deserves “one” second chance - but I don’t hear Chad asking us to forgive & forget. We are the Bengals - we will survive!!

He’ll never sit out the whole year…his pocket book/ego will never let it happen…if he wasn’t so greedy demanding a second extension in 2 years he would not be in this mess.

At the same time he said he would like to play for any team other than Cincinnati so I say trade him to a team like Chicago, Kansas City, or Atlanta who don’t have a real Quarterback. Then maybe when his numbers dip and he doesn’t make the pro bowl maybe he will be able to see how good he had it in Cincinnati

i think, (and hope) they will let him sit. it will cost the bengals way too much salary cap room to trade him, and chad will be the only one to suffer. mike brown really would rather have the millions he will save rather than the extra roster spot, so they will let him sit for a while. if he plays, fine, if he doesn’t, stay away and don’t infect the team. although i am a lifelong bengals fan, it is not like chad is going to really affect the outcome of the season one way or the other. mike brown is the problem, not any player. i have no problem with chad, but he hasn’t really earned the money that he complained for last time, so screwem’. they should have kept chris henry. at least he showed up to play. but the nfl apparently likes playing nanny/ god. trading him won’t help the salary cap hit, so marvin was right to turn down wash. clearly noone else wants to deal with him either.

don’t you love these idiots who say “let us have him, the bears (or cowboys or whomever) will give you _ for him.” like what any one of us means a pot of beans to a nfl team. we are just the moneybags for the teams, they do not care what any fan has to say

Chad, what happened to you? You used to be a man, now you are simply a cry baby. See what it feels like to sit on the side lines and watch the TEAM win w/out you.

85 isn’t smart enough to figure out that he’s using the same motive of operation as Owens did in Philly (attack the organization, then attack the players, etc.)until you get your way. The problem is that the Bengals own the rights to him for 4 more years. The coach you should be listening to is the Head Coach and not the agent (the same one as Owens). This is not Philly and Mike Brown don’t play those games. No one will want you in 4 years if you are dumb enough to sit out…..WAKE UP!

Trade the #9 (not Carson) pick , Chad , and Marvin for a new GM !!!!

(this is getting beyond stupid! the team needs to be overhauled starting with a new owner!!!!!!)

(The Brown family should be taking most of the blame for where the team is and has been up to this point. But nobody has mentioned one thing about the owners. The league should make them sell the team to someone who understands football !!!!!!!!)

You know that Mike Brown us tight with money, and money is the reason that Chad is here. Chad, you are not great! you are good, not gteat!Mike Brown, ask Chad if he wants to leave, show me the money, then trade him for 2 first roungers!!!!!

Look at what is happening in the league right now… TO with Philly, CJ in Cincy, Boldin in Arizona, Urlacher in Chicago… players are trying to dictate how things go. Do you think Washington offers $21 million to CJ if they think he’s really a jerk? No, infact I’d guess they already talked about a contract = TAMPERING.

Like it or not, Mike Brown and Marvin Lewis are doing a service to the NFL by sticking to their guns, now Arizona and Chicago have shown to take a stern approach too. (more)

Everyone thinks it’s a bad decision to trade him because of the $8 mil salary cap hit. But that means it FREES UP salary cap money every year following through 2011, doesn’t it? Does anyone think the Bengals aren’t going to suck anyway this year - Chad or no Chad? I say take your lumps this year, trade chad, and pick up future draft picks with more future cap room. Mike Brown should have jumped on the ‘skins offer - but we all know he’s not very bright.

First off, I say keep him and let him sit the bench. If he does not perform (as in a seal and ball act, only the seal catches the ball all the time, and Chad doesn’t), then the media has no reason to cover his act anymore. At what point do rejects such as Johnson grow up? When does it stop being all about him? Secondly, I can’t help but believe the team owners deserve all they get. Stop making little gods and monsters out of these ordinary men who just happen to be able to catch a ball.

Quit writing about him!! Let the team management make their own decisions and quit giving him the attention he so badly craves!! I’ve been a Bengals fan since birth and all this publicity just makes us look bad.

The Bengals can’t afford to trade Chad for two ‘guaranteed’ first round picks, PAY THEM, CHAD, and stay under the cap- along with all their other picks that they have in the draft.

It’s been interesting to see the Cowboys continuing to give players another chance. Adam “Pacman” Jones, T.O., maybe Chris Henry after he gets off of house arrest, and then a trade for Chad. hmm

As much as I’d like to see Chad out of here, I know that it’s not going to happen unless the perfect deal comes by.

Ok, lets see what we got here now…..he scores a td then immedeatly goes to the sidelines and dons a “zuit suit sized gold jacket that sez “future hall of famer”, which should go over “real”well with the Hall selection comittee later on….and then there’s the night club car giveaway stunt that backfired on him and has resulted in a multimilliondollar lawsuit…….eh…ok….yep….we need this putz around here if not for his “Daffy Duck” act, he might just catch the ball at times!

Let him sit out the season, Bungles aren’t going anywhere this year anyhow. Show the PUTZ a lesson.

Force him to sit out. But only because that would screw up one of the teams in my fantasy football league. Otherwise (as a long-time Giants fan) I couldn’t care less about the Bungles. I’ve already traded Carson Palmer for draft picks, so I’m set.

The Bengals are geting what they deserve. Marvin and the media created #85. They should have stopped his personal junk on the field years ago and made him act like a pro. When things were going good, all his acts were cute and funny. Now what are they? Trade him, keep him whatever, but they created him so live with it.

Chad is an idiot…if he truly wants to win, he should try hanging on to the football and run the right routes every now and then.

I hope Cincy has the guts to do what Tampa did with Keyshawn…let him sit, hold his rights, and move on. My guess is, they don’t. They’ll get a better offer (like two guaranteed first rounders) and take it.

The Colts, the Patriots, the Giants … none of these top tier teams would have tolerated Johnson’s antics over the years like the Bengals. That’s the difference between a wanna-be and a professional organization. Marvin owns the blame on Johnson being a distraction.

Keep him and let him sit! Maybe, just maybe he may GROW UP!!!!! He was happy as a clam when he signed that 6 year CONTRACT.

When I think of the Bengals the song “Send in the clowns” comes to mind.

If everyone would just ignore this idiot and not give him the attention he wants then perhaps he will report to camp. I see him holding out to avoid camp then joining the team when the season starts.

Why hold onto a pain in the butt if you can get a couple picks for him? Marvin Lewis has to say what he’s told to say I’m sure, but somewhere along the line the shot callers have forgotten that the name of the game is to win every game. Mike Brown expects his team to play through injury and personal troubles but is he hanging on to this clown to prove a point or because he won’t have to pay the salary then scape goat the coaching staff when they go 4 - 12? Send his sorry butt down the road!
