BENGALS NOTES

Williams' snaps make 'Jurassic Line'

By Chick Ludwig

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Bengals offensive line coach Paul Alexander has a nickname for his unit when right guard Bobbie Williams rotates in for snaps at center.

"I call it the Jurassic Line," he said.

That's because Levi Jones, Andrew Whitworth, Williams, Stacy Andrews and Willie Anderson average 6 feet, 6 inches and 333 pounds.

Williams has been snapping to quarterback Carson Palmer on the side at different times in camp. He's considered the No. 3 emergency center behind starter Eric Ghiaciuc and backup Dan Santucci.

"You never know," Williams said. "It's a long season and hopefully we don't succumb to injuries. But if so, you're going to get a good dose of it — similar to a Mack Truck hitting somebody, you know? I like it. We'll see how it goes."

Mohawk man

Ghiaciuc is wearing a Mohawk hairstyle — both sides of his head shaved with a strip of long hair down the middle.

"Guys are saying, 'Why the Mohawk? What did you do it for?' I said, 'Well, I had a wild idea this summer. I wanted to have a Mohawk. So I got a Mohawk," Ghiaciuc said.

"The guys give me grief about it. But I like it. I'm going to keep it for a while. It's cool and it's different. I just want to be different."

'Very unimpressed'

One word describes placekicker Shayne Graham's weekend showing. Disappointing.

He converted 6-of-9 field goals (.667), splitting the uprights from 52 yards out, but missing from 35, 46 and 48 — all wide right.

"I was very unimpressed," Graham said. "My job is to make every kick no matter what the reasoning, and I didn't make all of 'em. It's not where I want to be, but that's obviously what practice is for — to get those special situations out of the way and get ready for the season."

Jet jaws

Strong safety Kyries Hebert talked trash with wide receiver Chad Johnson. It was all in good fun. "For the type of player I am, we're not going to see each other right now because he's my teammate," Hebert said. "I hit people, and he's not one of those guys I can hit. So we're just talking for the fun of it."

Blue yonder

University of Kentucky men's basketball coach Billy Gillespie took in his first NFL practice on Monday, Aug. 4, and was stunned at the size of the players.

"These guys are just so big, and then you watch 'em run and they're so fast, and they're so skilled," Gillespie said. "You just look for everything. You observe. That's what coaches are. Coaches are observers, and you try to pick up one thing that might help your particular team."

What's so special about coaching the UK Wildcats?

"Everybody cares so much about it," he said. "The thing that separates anything in life is passion. The passion goes en masse with Kentucky basketball."

Quick hitters

• The Bengals cut ties with tailback Kenny Irons for good, waiving him from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Irons was originally waived on July 25 after he failed the club's physical exam. He cleared waivers and reverted back to the Bengals' PUP list.

• Linebacker Brandon Johnson intercepted Carson Palmer in a red-zone drill.

• Defensive end Frostee Rucker jumped offsides twice and was replaced by Jonathan Fanene.
